Early life
Max Emilian Verstappen was born on September 30, 1997, in Hasselt, Belgium, and grew up in nearby Maaseik. Racing runs in the family. His father, Jos Verstappen, raced in Formula 1 in the 1990s and 2000s, and his mother, Sophie Kumpen, was a successful kart racer.
He started karting at four and won his first championships as a young child. In 2013, aged 15, he won two European karting titles and the KZ World Championship.
He skipped most of the junior single-seater ladder. After one season of Formula 3 in 2014, in which he won 10 races, Red Bull signed him to its junior program and handed him an F1 seat.
Toro Rosso and the early Red Bull years (2015–2020)
Verstappen made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix. At 17, he was the youngest driver ever to start a Formula 1 race, and he won the FIA’s Rookie of the Year award.
Four races into 2016, Red Bull promoted him to its senior team. He won on his first weekend, at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, becoming the youngest Grand Prix winner in history at 18.
Mercedes dominated the next few years, but Verstappen kept winning races in a slower car. His pay rose quickly, from about €500,000 in 2016 to an estimated €23 million including bonuses in 2020.
Four world titles (2021–2024)
In 2021, Verstappen fought Lewis Hamilton all season. He won the title on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, becoming the first Dutch world champion.
The next three years were dominant:
- 2022: 15 wins and a second title, then a record at the time
- 2023: 19 wins from 22 races and a record 575 points, including 10 wins in a row
- 2024: a fourth straight title, clinched with two races to spare
These seasons drove his biggest jumps in income. Forbes estimates he collected $25 million in bonuses alone in 2023. In March 2022 he signed a five-year extension through 2028, at the time reported to be the most lucrative contract in F1.
2025: a two-point miss
Red Bull went through big changes in 2025. Team principal Christian Horner was dismissed in July and replaced by Laurent Mekies, and advisor Helmut Marko later left the team.
On track, Verstappen fell far behind the McLaren drivers in the first half of the year. He then mounted a late charge, won eight Grands Prix and finished second with 421 points, just two points behind champion Lando Norris.
Even without the title, Forbes ranked him the best-paid driver on track in 2025, at about $76 million.
2026 season and team-switch rumors
New engine and chassis rules arrived in 2026, and Red Bull began building its own power units with Ford. The car started the year off the pace. Verstappen, who now races with No. 3, did not win any of the first 11 rounds.
That slump set off months of speculation:
- His 2028 contract reportedly had an exit clause that let him leave for 2027 if he was outside the top two in the standings at the summer break. He was well outside it.
- Mercedes was linked to him again, as it had been in 2025, and Sky Sports reported that his management held talks with McLaren earlier in 2026.
- Reports also suggested he was weighing time away from F1 altogether.
He ended the talk on August 20, 2026, signing a new deal with Red Bull through the end of 2030. He was sixth in the standings at the time. The terms were not disclosed.
Results improved in the autumn. He won the Bahrain Grand Prix (moved to Malaysia’s Sepang circuit) in October, then Singapore, then the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, from fifth on the grid. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli clinched the 2026 title in Mexico. As of November 4, 2026, Verstappen is second in the standings with 261 points, two ahead of Hamilton, with the São Paulo Grand Prix next.
Endorsements
Verstappen earns far less off the track than Hamilton. Forbes puts his endorsement and other off-track income at about $8 million in the year to May 2026. His partners include:
- Heineken, which uses him to promote its alcohol-free Heineken 0.0
- EA Sports, maker of the official F1 video games
- Fanatics, the sports merchandise company run by Michael Rubin
- Ford, Red Bull’s engine partner from 2026
His longest personal sponsor was the Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo, which backed him from before his F1 debut. That deal ended after the 2023 season, when Jumbo pulled out of sports sponsorship.
Verstappen.com Racing and sim racing
Verstappen also runs his own racing businesses. Verstappen.com Racing competes in GT3 sports-car racing. In 2025 it ran an Aston Martin in the GT World Challenge Europe, and its drivers won the Endurance Cup’s Gold Cup class. For 2026 the team switched to Mercedes-AMG cars on a multi-year deal.
He races for the team himself when F1 allows it:
- September 2025: won an NLS endurance race at the Nürburgring in a Ferrari 296 GT3, his first GT race
- March 2026: crossed the line first in another Nürburgring race, but the car was disqualified for using one set of tires too many
- May 2026: made his Nürburgring 24 Hours debut in a Mercedes-AMG GT3, starting fourth but finishing well down the order
He is also one of the best-known sim racers in the world and has raced online since 2015. For years he drove for Team Redline, one of the top esports teams. In March 2026 the team was rebranded Verstappen Sim Racing and brought under his racing group. One of its drivers, Chris Lulham, moved into real GT racing with his team, a path that echoes gamer-turned-racer Jann Mardenborough.
The value of these businesses has not been made public.
Real estate
Verstappen has lived in Monaco since 2015, like many F1 drivers.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Monaco penthouse apartment | Before 2025 | Nearly €14 million |
| Apartment in Le Renzo, Mareterra, Monaco | 2025 (moved in) | Not disclosed; homes in the building start around €65 million |
Le Renzo sits in Mareterra, a new district Monaco built on land reclaimed from the sea at a cost of about $2.3 billion. He moved there with Kelly Piquet and their family in 2025. Reports have not confirmed which unit he owns or what he paid.
Private jet, yacht and cars
In 2020 Verstappen bought a Dassault Falcon 900EX private jet from Sir Richard Branson. In 2025 he upgraded to a new Dassault Falcon 8X, reportedly valued at about $58 million, and put the older jet up for sale.
Around the same time he bought a 33-metre Mangusta yacht named “Unleash the Lion,” estimated at $12 million to $15 million. His car collection includes an Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar and a Ferrari Monza SP2.
Personal life
Verstappen has been in a relationship with Kelly Piquet since 2020. She is a model and the daughter of three-time F1 champion Nelson Piquet. Kelly also has a daughter, Penelope, from an earlier relationship.
The couple’s daughter, Lily, was born in 2025. They announced her birth on May 2, 2025, just before the Miami Grand Prix.
In 2022 he was made an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau, a Dutch royal honor, and in 2024 Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
