Early life
Patrick Lavon Mahomes II was born on September 17, 1995, in Tyler, Texas. His father, Pat Mahomes, pitched in Major League Baseball for 11 seasons, so Patrick grew up around big-league clubhouses.
At Whitehouse High School he starred in football, baseball and basketball. As a senior quarterback he threw for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns.
Texas Tech
Mahomes played football and, briefly, baseball at Texas Tech. In 2016 he led the nation’s top college division with 5,052 passing yards and threw 41 touchdowns. He left after three seasons with 11,252 career passing yards and 93 touchdowns.
The draft and the rookie deal (2017–2020)
In the 2017 NFL Draft, the Chiefs traded up from No. 27 to No. 10 to take him, giving the Buffalo Bills two extra picks, including a 2018 first-rounder. He signed a four-year rookie contract worth $16.42 million, including a $10.08 million signing bonus.
He sat behind Alex Smith as a rookie, then took over in 2018 and threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns. He won NFL MVP in his first season as a starter, while earning a salary of about $1.2 million.
A year later he led the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIV over the San Francisco 49ers and was named Super Bowl MVP, the youngest quarterback to win the award.
The $450 million extension (2020)
On July 6, 2020, Mahomes signed a 10-year extension worth $450 million in base value, and up to about $503 million with incentives. At the time it was the largest contract in sports history by total value.
The deal ran through the 2031 season. Instead of large up-front guarantees, it used a rolling guarantee system, where future salaries become guaranteed a year or so in advance. That gave the Chiefs flexibility, but it also meant Mahomes’s average pay soon fell behind newer quarterback deals.
The 2023 restructure
In September 2023, the Chiefs reworked the deal to pay him about $210.6 million over 2023 to 2026, adding cash without adding years. The team also restructured his deal several more times to free salary-cap space, most recently in February 2026, when his 2026 cap number dropped to about $34.65 million.
The 2026 rework through 2033
On June 10, 2026, while he was recovering from knee surgery, Mahomes and the Chiefs agreed to a new structure:
- Total value: a reported $504.75 million through 2033, rising to about $522 million with incentives
- New money: about $239.1 million
- Average salary: more than $63 million a year, a record for a quarterback
- Guarantees: the first four years fully guaranteed at signing
- Length: two years added, making him the only NFL player signed beyond 2030
Super Bowl run and the dynasty years
Mahomes has played in five Super Bowls and won three:
- Super Bowl LIV (February 2020): beat the 49ers; Super Bowl MVP
- Super Bowl LV (2021): lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Super Bowl LVII (2023): beat the Eagles 38–35; Super Bowl MVP and second NFL MVP
- Super Bowl LVIII (2024): beat the 49ers 25–22 in overtime; third Super Bowl MVP
- Super Bowl LIX (2025): lost to the Eagles 40–22, ending the bid for a three-peat
The 2025 season was his toughest. The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in his tenure as a starter, and he tore his ACL and LCL against the Chargers in December 2025. He returned for Week 1 of the 2026 season, and the Chiefs started 4–0.
Endorsements
Mahomes is the NFL’s most marketable player. Forbes estimated his off-field income at $30 million for 2026, and Sportico gave the same figure for 2025, when it also ranked him the league’s top earner at $80 million total.
His current and past sponsors include:
- Adidas, which launched his first signature shoe, the Mahomes 1 Impact FLX, in 2021
- State Farm, with a long-running TV campaign
- Oakley, T-Mobile, Coors Light, Hublot, Beats by Dre and Head & Shoulders
- Panini trading cards and Invisalign
- Kansas City brands such as Hy-Vee, CommunityAmerica Credit Union and Hunt’s ketchup, his first deal
Team stakes and investments
Mahomes has used his income to buy into sports teams and consumer brands, usually alongside other athletes.
| Investment | Type | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Kansas City Royals (MLB) | Minority owner | 2020 |
| Sporting Kansas City (MLS) | Minority owner | 2021 |
| Kansas City Current (NWSL) | Ownership stake, alongside co-owner Brittany Mahomes | 2020s |
| Alpine F1 team | Investor group with Travis Kelce, Rory McIlroy and others | 2023 |
| BioSteel | Equity partner in the sports drink brand | 2020 |
| Whoop and Hyperice | Investor in fitness and recovery brands | Early 2020s |
| Whataburger (KMO Burger) | Investor in a franchise group in Kansas and Missouri | 2023 |
The Current is the most notable. The team built the first stadium designed for a women’s professional team, and Forbes valued the club at about $275 million in 2025. He has also invested in a Major League Pickleball franchise. Not every bet has paid off: BioSteel entered creditor protection in 2023, so that stake likely lost most of its value.
Real estate
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Kansas City, Missouri condo | 2017 | $350,000; sold in 2023 after listing at $550,000 |
| Kansas City, Missouri home (Sunset Hill area) | 2019 | About $1.8–1.9 million; sold in 2023 after listing at $2.9 million |
| Westlake, Texas offseason home | 2020 | About $3.4 million |
| Belton, Missouri land (8 acres) | 2020 | Listed at about $400,000; custom estate built on it |
The family’s main home is the Belton estate, south of Kansas City, completed in 2023. It reportedly includes a private football field, a par-3 golf hole, an indoor basketball court, a pond and a resort-style pool. The total building cost has not been disclosed.
The Westlake home, near Dallas–Fort Worth, is about 7,800 square feet and sits in a gated golf community.
Personal life
Mahomes married his high school sweetheart, Brittany Matthews, in March 2022, after proposing in September 2020. Brittany, a former college soccer player and fitness trainer, is a co-owner of the Kansas City Current.
The couple have three children: daughter Sterling Skye (2021), son Patrick “Bronze” Lavon III (2022) and daughter Golden Raye (born January 12, 2025). His younger brother, Jackson, is a social media creator.
Philanthropy
In 2019 Mahomes started the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation, which supports children’s health, education and community programs, with a focus on Kansas City and Texas. He has also given back to Texas Tech, including a reported $5 million gift in 2024 toward football facilities.
