Early life

Taylor Alison Swift was born on December 13, 1989, in West Reading, Pennsylvania. Her father, Scott, was a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch, and her mother, Andrea, worked as a mutual fund marketing executive.

She spent part of her childhood on a Christmas tree farm the family owned in Pennsylvania. She started singing in local talent contests and at sports events as a child and began writing songs on the guitar at around 12.

When she was 14, her father transferred to Merrill Lynch’s Nashville office and the family moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee, so she could chase a country music career.

Early career and country breakthrough

Swift signed an artist development deal with RCA Records at 13. A year later she became the youngest songwriter ever signed by Sony/ATV, the music publisher.

In 2005 she signed with the new independent label Big Machine Records. Her debut album, Taylor Swift, came out in October 2006 and spent 157 weeks on the Billboard 200.

Her second album, Fearless (2008), made her a star. It spent 11 weeks at No. 1, was the best-selling album of 2009 in the U.S., and won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2010, when she was 20.

Speak Now (2010) sold more than 1 million copies in its first week, a sign that she was becoming one of the biggest sellers in the music business.

Pop reinvention: Red, 1989 and Reputation

Red (2012) sold 1.21 million copies in its first week and mixed country with pop. Two years later she went fully pop with 1989.

1989 spent 11 weeks at No. 1, sold about 14 million copies worldwide and won her a second Album of the Year Grammy. The 1989 World Tour grossed about $250 million, the most of any tour in 2015.

Reputation (2017) sold another 1.21 million copies in its first U.S. week. Its stadium tour grossed about $345.7 million, then a record for a U.S. tour.

Tour grosses before the Eras Tour

Tour Years Gross
Red Tour 2013–2014 $150.2 million
1989 World Tour 2015 $250 million
Reputation Stadium Tour 2018 $345.7 million

Republic Records and the pandemic albums

When her Big Machine contract ended, Swift signed with Republic Records, part of Universal Music Group, in November 2018. A key term of the deal: she would own the master recordings of everything she released from then on.

Her first Republic album, Lover (2019), was the year’s best-selling album worldwide by a solo artist. During the pandemic she surprised fans with Folklore and Evermore in 2020. Folklore won her a third Album of the Year Grammy.

Losing her masters and buying them back

In 2019, music manager Scooter Braun bought Big Machine Records, and with it the masters of Swift’s first six albums. She publicly objected and said she had not been given a fair chance to buy them.

In 2020 Braun sold the masters to the investment firm Shamrock Holdings. Swift responded by re-recording her old albums so fans and advertisers could use versions she owned:

  • Fearless (Taylor’s Version), April 2021
  • Red (Taylor’s Version), November 2021
  • Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), July 2023
  • 1989 (Taylor’s Version), October 2023

All four debuted at No. 1. In May 2025 Swift finally bought the original masters from Shamrock, for a reported $360 million. For the first time, she owned every song she had ever released, which is a big reason Forbes lifted its estimate to $2 billion.

Midnights, The Tortured Poets Department and The Life of a Showgirl

Her recent albums have broken one sales record after another:

  • Midnights (2022): about 1 million first-week sales and her record fourth Album of the Year Grammy
  • The Tortured Poets Department (2024): 2.6 million first-week units and 17 weeks at No. 1
  • The Life of a Showgirl (October 2025): about 4 million first-week units, the fastest-selling album in U.S. history

Because she owns these masters outright, each record-breaking release adds directly to her wealth.

Eras Tour earnings

The Eras Tour ran from March 2023 to December 2024 across five continents. It played 149 shows and became the first tour in history to gross more than $2 billion in ticket sales. Forbes estimates its total revenue, including merchandise, at about $2.2 billion.

The tour also made money in other ways:

  • Concert film: Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (2023) grossed more than $250 million, the most ever for a concert film. Swift distributed it herself through AMC, keeping a larger share of the revenue.
  • Streaming: the film and a later documentary series went to Disney+.
  • Merchandise: tour merchandise and new vinyl editions sold in record numbers.

Swift also shared the windfall. She reportedly paid more than $197 million in bonuses to her tour crew, dancers and band, and donated to food banks in many tour cities.

Film, TV and directing

Swift has acted in Valentine’s Day (2010), The Lorax (2012), The Giver (2014), Cats (2019) and Amsterdam (2022). Her Netflix documentary Miss Americana premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

She has also become a director. All Too Well: The Short Film (2022), which she wrote and directed, won the Grammy for Best Music Video, making her the first solo director to win it.

Awards and records

  • 14 Grammy Awards, including a record four Album of the Year wins (Fearless, 1989, Folklore, Midnights)
  • Most-awarded artist in the history of the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards and MTV VMAs
  • Time Person of the Year in 2023, the first person honored for achievements in the arts
  • Youngest woman inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2026)

Endorsements

Earlier in her career, Swift had paid deals with brands such as Diet Coke, CoverGirl, Keds, AT&T and Capital One. Today endorsements are a small part of her income. Her own music, tours and films earn far more than any sponsorship.

Real estate

Swift has spent well over $100 million on homes across the U.S. Her property portfolio includes:

Location Bought Reported price
Nashville penthouse 2009 About $2 million
Nashville (Belle Meade) mansion 2011 About $2.5 million
Watch Hill, Rhode Island oceanfront estate 2013 About $17.75 million
Tribeca, New York penthouses 2014 About $20 million
Beverly Hills (former Samuel Goldwyn estate) 2015 About $25 million
Tribeca, New York townhouse 2017 About $18 million

The Rhode Island mansion is her best-known home. She bought it in cash in 2013 and later restored it; it has since risen sharply in value. Her Tribeca properties have also been expanded with neighboring units.

Personal life

Swift began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in 2023. The couple announced their engagement in August 2025 and married in July 2026 in New York City.

She lives mainly between Nashville, New York and Rhode Island.

Philanthropy

Swift gives often and usually quietly. Examples include:

  • Donations to food banks in cities on the Eras Tour
  • About $5 million to Feeding America for relief after Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024
  • $1 million to Tennessee tornado relief
  • Gifts to schools, music education programs and fans facing medical bills
