Early life

Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal was born on March 6, 1972, in Newark, New Jersey. He was raised by his mother, Lucille O’Neal, and his stepfather, Phillip Harrison, a career U.S. Army sergeant.

Because of his stepfather’s job, the family moved often, including to military bases in Germany. Shaq has said the Boys & Girls Club in Newark helped keep him off the streets as a boy.

The family later settled in San Antonio, Texas. At Robert G. Cole High School, Shaq led his team to a 68–1 record over two seasons and a state championship.

LSU and the 1992 draft

O’Neal played three seasons at Louisiana State University under coach Dale Brown. He was a two-time All-American and won the Adolph Rupp Trophy as national player of the year in 1991.

He left college early and was picked No. 1 overall by the Orlando Magic in the 1992 NBA draft. He kept a promise to his mother and finished his LSU degree in 2000. He later earned an MBA and a doctorate in education.

Orlando Magic years (1992–1996)

Shaq was an instant star. He won Rookie of the Year in 1993 and led the league in scoring in 1995. That same year he took the young Magic to the NBA Finals, where they lost to Houston.

Off the court he became a marketing machine. He signed a shoe deal with Reebok as a rookie, released the platinum rap album Shaq Diesel in 1993, had his own video game, Shaq Fu, and starred in movies such as Blue Chips (1994) and Kazaam (1996).

Lakers dynasty (1996–2004)

In July 1996 Shaq left Orlando as a free agent and signed a seven-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers worth about $120 million, a huge figure at the time. In October 2000 the Lakers added a three-year, $88.5 million extension.

Alongside Kobe Bryant and coach Phil Jackson, he won three straight titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and was Finals MVP each time. He also won the 2000 league MVP award.

After tension with Bryant and the front office, the Lakers traded him to Miami in July 2004.

Miami, Phoenix, Cleveland and Boston (2004–2011)

In Miami he teamed with Dwyane Wade and won his fourth championship in 2006. He was traded to Phoenix in 2008, then played one season each in Cleveland and Boston.

Shaq announced his retirement on June 1, 2011. He finished with 28,596 points, 15 All-Star selections and three All-Star Game MVP awards. He entered the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, and the Lakers, Heat and Magic have all retired his jersey.

TV career: TNT and the move to ESPN

Weeks after retiring, Shaq joined TNT’s Inside the NBA with Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith. The show became the most popular studio program in sports and made him a household name for a new generation.

When the NBA’s new media deals started in 2025–26, TNT lost its game rights. In November 2024 Warner Bros. Discovery settled with the league and agreed to license Inside the NBA to ESPN and ABC, while TNT Sports kept producing the show from its Atlanta studio.

In February 2025 Front Office Sports reported that Shaq had agreed to a long-term deal with TNT Sports worth more than $15 million a year. The show debuted on ESPN on October 22, 2025, with the same four hosts. For the 2026–27 season ESPN expanded it to 25 nights, up from 20.

Shaq also hosts The Big Podcast with Shaq and performs worldwide as an EDM DJ under the name DJ Diesel.

Business ventures and investments

Shaq has said he follows a simple rule: invest in things that change people’s lives and in businesses he understands. That approach has built a portfolio that rivals his playing earnings.

Authentic Brands Group

In 2015 Shaq signed a deal with Authentic Brands Group (ABG), the brand-licensing company that owns Reebok, Champion, Sports Illustrated and Forever 21. ABG took over management of his name and likeness, and Shaq received equity in the company.

ABG was valued at about $20 billion in a 2023 funding round. Shaq has publicly called himself the company’s second-largest shareholder, but his exact stake has never been disclosed. It is likely one of his most valuable assets.

Reebok

Shaq’s first shoe deal was with Reebok in 1992. After that deal ended, he launched his own budget sneaker line sold through discount retailers, which reportedly sold tens of millions of pairs.

In October 2023, after ABG bought Reebok from Adidas, the company named Shaq President of Reebok Basketball, with Allen Iverson as vice president. They have since signed young players, including WNBA star Angel Reese.

Papa Johns

In March 2019 Shaq joined the board of Papa Johns as the company tried to repair its image. He signed a three-year endorsement worth $8.25 million, half in cash and half in company stock.

He also put about $840,000 into a joint venture that owns nine Atlanta-area restaurants, taking about a 30% stake. He renewed the endorsement in 2022 and signed a one-year, $3.5 million extension in 2025. He left the board in 2024, and Papa Johns did not renew the endorsement when it expired in March 2026.

Big Chicken and other franchises

  • Big Chicken: launched in Las Vegas in 2018. By early 2026 it had more than 40 locations, plus spots in arenas and on Carnival cruise ships, with hundreds more in development. Craveworthy Brands took over operations in 2025.
  • Five Guys: at one point he owned about 155 locations, roughly 10% of the chain, before selling his stake.
  • Other units: he has owned 17 Auntie Anne’s shops, dozens of 24 Hour Fitness gyms, a large group of car washes, a Krispy Kreme in Atlanta and a movie theater in Newark.

Tech, sports and media

  • Google: an early investor before its IPO.
  • Ring: invested in the video doorbell company in 2016 and appeared in its ads before Amazon bought it for about $1 billion in 2018.
  • Sacramento Kings: a minority owner from 2013 until 2022, when he sold to take on sports betting work.

Endorsements

Shaq is one of the most-seen faces in American advertising. His long list of partners includes Gold Bond, Icy Hot, The General auto insurance, Carnival Cruise Line, Pepsi and Buick. Industry reports have put his yearly endorsement income in the tens of millions of dollars.

Crypto lawsuits

Not every deal went well. Shaq agreed to pay $11 million in 2024 to settle a class-action suit over his Astrals NFT project, and about $1.8 million in 2025 to settle claims tied to his promotion of the collapsed FTX exchange. He did not admit wrongdoing in either case.

Real estate

Property Year Reported price

Las Vegas, Nevada home 2020 About $765,000
Windermere, Florida mansion Sold 2021 Last listed at $16.5 million; final price not disclosed

The Florida mansion was his best-known home. It covers more than 31,000 square feet, with 12 bedrooms, a 17-car garage and an indoor basketball court. He first listed it for $28 million in 2018 and sold it in 2021 after cutting the price. Today he spends much of his time in the Atlanta area.

Personal life

Shaq married Shaunie Nelson in December 2002. They have four children together, and Shaq also helped raise Shaunie’s son, Myles. Their divorce was finalized in 2011.

He has six children in total, including a daughter, Taahirah, from an earlier relationship. His son Shareef played college basketball at UCLA and LSU. Shaq has said his children must earn degrees and pitch a business plan before he will invest in their ventures.

He has long served as a reserve police officer and is known for quietly paying for strangers’ purchases and meals.

Philanthropy

Shaq gives through the Shaquille O’Neal Foundation, which focuses on young people in underserved communities. Examples include:

  • Shaq-a-Claus, a holiday program that hands out gifts to thousands of children
  • A $24 million youth sports complex in Southern Nevada, with work begun in 2025
  • Rebuilding public basketball courts with partners such as Icy Hot and Papa Johns
  • Long-time support for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Papa Johns alone donated more than $450,000 to his foundation as part of their deals.
