Early life
David Robert Joseph Beckham was born on May 2, 1975, at Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, east London. His father, Ted, was a kitchen fitter, and his mother, Sandra, was a hairdresser.
His parents were devoted Manchester United fans, and he grew up dreaming of playing for the club. He signed schoolboy forms with United at 14 and joined the club as a trainee in July 1991.
Manchester United years (1992–2003)
Beckham made his first-team debut in September 1992 as a teenager. After a short loan at Preston North End, he became a regular in 1995 as part of a young group later known as the “Class of ’92”.
His fame exploded in August 1996 when he scored from the halfway line against Wimbledon. Known for his crossing and free kicks, he won:
- Six Premier League titles
- Two FA Cups
- The 1999 UEFA Champions League, as part of United’s historic treble
He finished second in the 1999 Ballon d’Or voting. By the early 2000s he was the most famous footballer on the planet, and his commercial value began to rival his playing value.
Real Madrid and England (2003–2007)
In 2003 Real Madrid signed Beckham for about €37 million, joining stars such as Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo Nazário. Real reportedly saw him as a way to sell shirts in Asia and the U.S. as much as a midfielder. He won the La Liga title in his final season, 2006–07.
For England, Beckham earned 115 caps and scored 17 goals. He captained the team for six years and played at three World Cups.
LA Galaxy and the MLS deal (2007–2012)
Beckham’s move to the LA Galaxy in 2007 changed both his finances and American soccer. The deal was promoted as worth $250 million, but that was a marketing figure that included possible sponsorship and merchandise income. His guaranteed salary was $6.5 million a year, or $32.5 million over five years.
MLS created a special rule for star players, now known as the Designated Player rule, so the Galaxy could pay him above the salary cap. He also received a share of club revenue.
The most valuable part of the contract was a clause few noticed at the time: the right to buy an MLS expansion team for just $25 million after he retired. He won two MLS Cups with the Galaxy, in 2011 and 2012, and had two loan spells at AC Milan during the off-seasons.
He ended his career at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, winning the French title and donating his entire salary to a local children’s charity. He retired in May 2013.
Inter Miami CF
Beckham used his expansion option in 2014, choosing Miami. Finding a stadium site took years, and the team, Inter Miami CF, did not start playing until 2020. Brothers Jorge and José Mas are the majority owners; Beckham is co-owner and president.
The club’s value soared after it signed Lionel Messi in July 2023. Messi’s deal was reported at $50 million to $60 million a year, with extra income tied to Apple and adidas. Since then:
- Inter Miami won the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the MLS Cup in December 2025
- Messi re-signed with the club through the 2028 season
- The team opened its privately built Nu Stadium at Miami Freedom Park in April 2026
- Sportico valued Inter Miami at $1.45 billion in February 2026, the highest in MLS
Forbes, which values the club slightly lower, estimates Beckham’s stake at about 26%, worth more than $300 million. That is many times the $25 million he paid for the franchise rights. He is also a co-owner of English club Salford City with former United teammates.
Brand business: DB Ventures and Authentic Brands
Beckham’s licensing and endorsement work runs through DB Ventures. In 2022, Authentic Brands Group, owner of brands such as Reebok and Brooks Brothers, bought 55% of the company for about $269 million. Beckham kept 45% and creative control.
The deal turned future endorsement income into cash and stock up front. Authentic Brands handles licensing deals around the world, while Beckham remains the face of the brand.
The wider Beckham business keeps growing. Accounts filed in 2026 for DRJB Holdings, the parent of his brand companies, showed revenue of about £84 million for 2025 and pre-tax profit of nearly £50 million.
Studio 99 and Netflix
Beckham co-founded the production company Studio 99, which makes documentaries and brand campaigns. Its biggest hit is the Netflix series Beckham (2023), directed by Fisher Stevens. The four-part series won the Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series in 2024.
Studio 99 also produced a Netflix series about Victoria, released in October 2025, and has a first-look agreement with Netflix.
Endorsements
Beckham has been one of the most marketable athletes in history for almost 30 years. His longest partner is adidas, which first signed him in 1996. In 2003 he agreed a deal widely reported as a lifetime contract with the brand.
Other major partners over the years include:
- Brylcreem, Pepsi and Gillette during his playing days
- H&M, which sold a Beckham underwear and clothing line
- Haig Club, a whisky brand launched with Diageo in 2014
- Tudor watches and Boss menswear
- IM8, a supplements brand he co-founded with Prenetics in 2024
Forbes estimated he earned about $100 million in 2025 from endorsements and business ventures, more than most active players.
Victoria Beckham’s fashion brand
Victoria rose to fame as “Posh Spice” in the Spice Girls, one of the best-selling girl groups ever. She launched her own fashion label in 2008 and added a beauty line in 2019.
The fashion business lost money for years, but that changed recently. Victoria Beckham Holdings reported revenue of £129.8 million for 2025, up 15%, and its first-ever operating profit of £7.3 million. Her business is a big reason the couple’s combined wealth is much higher than his alone.
Real estate
The Beckhams own their homes jointly. Reported purchases and sales include:
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Beverly Hills, California home | 2007 | About $18.2 million (later sold) |
| Holland Park, London townhouse | 2013 | About £31.5 million |
| Great Tew, Cotswolds country home | 2016 | About £6.15 million |
| One Thousand Museum penthouse, Miami (bought) | 2020 | About $19.8 million |
| North Bay Road, Miami Beach waterfront mansion | 2024 | About $72.3 million |
| One Thousand Museum penthouse (sold) | 2026 | About $24.6 million |
The Holland Park house is their main London home, and the converted farmhouse in the Cotswolds is their country retreat. In Miami, they sold the penthouse in the Zaha Hadid-designed One Thousand Museum tower in 2026 for a profit of about $5 million, after buying a much larger waterfront home in Miami Beach.
Personal life
Beckham married Victoria Adams on July 4, 1999, at Luttrellstown Castle near Dublin. The couple have four children: Brooklyn (born 1999), Romeo (2002), Cruz (2005) and Harper (2011).
Brooklyn married Nicola Peltz, daughter of billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, in 2022. In January 2026 he said publicly that he did not want to reconcile with his parents, after months of reports about a family rift.
Beckham was appointed OBE in 2003. He was named a Knight Bachelor in the King’s Birthday Honours in June 2025 and was knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle on November 4, 2025, for services to sport and charity. Victoria is now Lady Beckham.
Philanthropy
Beckham has worked with UNICEF since 2005 as a Goodwill Ambassador. In 2015 he launched 7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund, which supports children’s health, education and safety around the world.
- Gave his full PSG salary in 2013 to a children’s charity in Paris
- Has fronted UNICEF campaigns on child malnutrition, polio and violence against children
- His 2025 knighthood specifically recognized his charity work alongside his sporting career
