Film Year Reported salary
Man on Fire 2004 About $20 million
American Gangster 2007 About $20 million, plus a pay-or-play fee from an earlier cancelled version; more than $40 million in total

The American Gangster deal is a good example of his bargaining power. He signed in 2004 for a version that Universal later shut down, was paid anyway, and then was paid again when the film was revived with Ridley Scott directing.

Early life

Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York. His father was a Pentecostal minister who also worked for the city water department, and his mother owned a beauty salon.

His parents divorced when he was a teenager, and he was sent to a private boarding school in upstate New York. As a boy he spent time at the local Boys Club, a group he still supports today.

He enrolled at Fordham University, where he first studied pre-med before switching to drama and journalism. He graduated in 1977, then spent a year studying acting at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

Breakthrough: St. Elsewhere and early films

Washington’s screen debut was the 1977 TV film Wilma, where he met his future wife. His big break came on television, playing Dr. Phillip Chandler on the NBC hospital drama St. Elsewhere from 1982 to 1988.

While on the show he moved into film. He repeated his stage role in A Soldier’s Story (1984) and played South African activist Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987), which earned him his first Oscar nomination.

His first Oscar win came quickly. He won Best Supporting Actor for Glory (1989), playing a soldier in one of the first Black regiments of the U.S. Civil War.

Leading man of the 1990s

The 1990s made him a bankable star. Key films included:

  • Mo’ Better Blues (1990) and Malcolm X (1992) with director Spike Lee; Malcolm X brought another Oscar nomination
  • Philadelphia and The Pelican Brief (both 1993), two big studio hits
  • Crimson Tide (1995) and Courage Under Fire (1996)
  • The Hurricane (1999), which won him a Golden Globe and another Oscar nomination

By the end of the decade he was firmly in the top tier of Hollywood earners.

Training Day and the $20 million era

Remember the Titans (2000) was a family hit, and Training Day (2001) changed his image. Playing a corrupt Los Angeles detective, he won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2002, becoming only the second Black man to win that award after Sidney Poitier.

The 2000s brought a steady run of profitable thrillers, usually at a reported fee of around $20 million:

  • John Q (2002) and Man on Fire (2004)
  • Inside Man (2006), another collaboration with Spike Lee
  • American Gangster (2007), which grossed about $266 million worldwide
  • The Book of Eli and Unstoppable (both 2010)
  • Safe House (2012), which passed $200 million worldwide

He earned another Best Actor nomination for Flight (2012).

The Equalizer franchise

The Equalizer (2014) gave Washington the first sequel of his career. Directed by longtime collaborator Antoine Fuqua, who also directed Training Day, it was followed by The Equalizer 2 (2018) and The Equalizer 3 (2023).

Each film grossed roughly $190 million worldwide on a modest budget, and Washington also served as a producer. A fourth and fifth film have been discussed, and Washington has said he is open to returning.

Broadway career

Washington has kept returning to the stage, even though theater pays far less than film. His Broadway credits are:

  • Checkmates (1988), his Broadway debut
  • Julius Caesar (2005), as Brutus
  • Fences (2010), which won him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play
  • A Raisin in the Sun (2014)
  • The Iceman Cometh (2018), which brought a second Tony nomination
  • Othello (2025), opposite Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago

Othello was a box office phenomenon. With top tickets reported near $1,000, it set records for a Broadway play, grossing more than $2.8 million in a single week during previews and about $3.8 million in its final week. It earned back its investment within three months and closed on June 8, 2025.

Directing and producing

Washington has directed four feature films:

  • Antwone Fisher (2002)
  • The Great Debaters (2007), about the Wiley College debate team
  • Fences (2016), which earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won Viola Davis the Best Supporting Actress award
  • A Journal for Jordan (2021)

He also leads a long-running project to bring the plays of August Wilson to the screen. He produced Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020) for Netflix, which won two Oscars, and The Piano Lesson (2024), directed by his son Malcolm and starring his son John David.

Gladiator II and recent work

In Gladiator II (2024), directed by Ridley Scott, Washington played Macrinus, a scheming power broker in ancient Rome. The film grossed more than $460 million worldwide. His salary was not reported. He told Variety at the time that there were “very few films left” he wanted to make.

In 2025 he reunited with Spike Lee for Highest 2 Lowest, a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low for A24 and Apple, playing a music executive. It was their fifth film together, and Puck reported his fee at about $35 million. That same year he received an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Upcoming projects

  • Here Comes the Flood: a Netflix heist thriller directed by Fernando Meirelles, co-starring Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Filming wrapped in January 2026, and release is set for 2027.
  • Black Panther 3: Washington is expected to join Ryan Coogler’s Marvel sequel, scheduled for late 2028.
  • Hannibal: a Netflix epic about the Carthaginian general, with Antoine Fuqua attached to direct. Pre-production was paused in mid-2026 over budget talks.

Real estate

Washington has kept a fairly low profile in real estate compared with other stars. His main known properties are in Los Angeles.

Property Year Reported price
Beverly Hills family estate, built with Pauletta on an empty lot Late 1990s Not confirmed
Century City condo, bought from a Saudi princess 2022 About $10.9 million

The Beverly Hills estate has been the family’s home for more than 20 years and is reported to be very large, with a pool, tennis court and guest house. The Century City condo is a combined unit of more than 8,000 square feet with six bedrooms in a luxury high-rise.

Personal life

Washington married actress and pianist Pauletta Pearson on June 25, 1983, after meeting her on the set of Wilma. They renewed their vows in South Africa in 1995 with Archbishop Desmond Tutu presiding.

They have four children, all of whom work in entertainment:

  • John David Washington, a former NFL running back who starred in BlacKkKlansman and Tenet
  • Katia Washington, a producer
  • Olivia Washington, an actress
  • Malcolm Washington, a director

Washington is a devout Christian. In December 2024 he was baptized and received a ministry license from a Church of God in Christ congregation in New York.
