Early life
Robert John Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan. His father, Robert Downey Sr., was an underground filmmaker, and his mother, Elsie Ann Ford, was an actress who appeared in her husband’s movies. He has an older sister, Allyson.
His father’s work kept the family moving, with stays in Greenwich Village, Woodstock, London, New Mexico, California and Connecticut. He made his screen debut at age five, playing a puppy in his father’s 1970 film Pound.
His childhood was troubled. Downey has said his father first gave him marijuana when he was a young child, something Downey Sr. later said he regretted. His parents divorced when he was 12. He attended Santa Monica High School but dropped out in 1982 to act full-time in New York.
Early career: Brat Pack years and Chaplin
Downey broke through in the mid-1980s. He played a bully in John Hughes’s Weird Science (1985) and spent one season, 1985–1986, in the cast of Saturday Night Live.
His performance as a rich, drug-addicted young man in Less Than Zero (1987) won strong reviews. He also had his first lead role that year in The Pick-up Artist.
His biggest early success was Chaplin (1992). Playing Charlie Chaplin earned him the BAFTA for Best Actor and his first Oscar nomination, even though the film itself lost money. Through the 1990s he kept working in films such as Natural Born Killers (1994) and Home for the Holidays (1995).
Addiction, prison and Ally McBeal
From 1996 to 2001, Downey’s drug addiction led to repeated arrests. In 1996 he was stopped for speeding and found with heroin, cocaine and an unloaded handgun. He later spent several months in a Los Angeles jail after missing a drug test.
In 2000 he was serving a sentence at a California state prison in Corcoran and was released after nearly a year. That same year he joined the hit series Ally McBeal and won a Golden Globe. He was let go in 2001 after more arrests.
The setbacks made him nearly uninsurable. For The Singing Detective (2003), his friend Mel Gibson paid his insurance bond so he could be cast. On Gothika (2003), producer Joel Silver held back 40 percent of his salary until filming was over. Downey says he has been sober since July 2003.
The comeback
Downey rebuilt his reputation with smaller, well-reviewed roles. He starred in Shane Black’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) and played reporter Paul Avery in David Fincher’s Zodiac (2007).
Then director Jon Favreau pushed Marvel to cast him in Iron Man. Marvel was financing the film itself and was cautious, which is one reason his base fee was so low. The movie, released in May 2008, grossed about $585 million worldwide and launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The same summer he earned an Oscar nomination for Tropic Thunder. A year later he won a Golden Globe for Sherlock Holmes (2009), which grossed about $524 million. Its sequel, A Game of Shadows (2011), grossed about $545 million.
Iron Man to Endgame
With each hit, Downey’s leverage grew. By The Avengers (2012), which grossed about $1.52 billion, he had a share of the profits that reportedly pushed his pay to around $50 million.
He played Tony Stark in ten Marvel films in total. The run peaked with Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Endgame grossed about $2.8 billion, and Stark’s death at the end of the film was one of the most-watched moments in movie history.
His first major post-Marvel lead, Dolittle (2020), was an expensive box-office disappointment. It was produced by his own company, Team Downey.
Oppenheimer, The Sympathizer and Broadway
Downey then took a different path. In Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023) he played Lewis Strauss, the official who turned against J. Robert Oppenheimer. He reportedly took a big pay cut, earning about $4 million rather than his usual fee.
The gamble paid off. In March 2024 he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, along with the Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG and Critics’ Choice awards. The film grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide.
Next, he played several different characters in HBO’s limited series The Sympathizer (2024), which Team Downey also produced. The role brought him an Emmy nomination.
In fall 2024 he made his Broadway debut in Ayad Akhtar’s play McNeal, about a novelist and artificial intelligence. It ran at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater from September 30 to November 24, 2024. His pay for the run was not disclosed.
Return as Doctor Doom
At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, Marvel announced that Downey would return to the franchise, this time as the villain Victor von Doom. He will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, set for December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars, set for December 17, 2027.
Variety reported that Marvel was paying directors Joe and Anthony Russo about $80 million for both films and that Downey’s deal was significantly larger. Other outlets have put his pay at $80 million or more, with box-office bonuses. Reported perks include private jet travel, a security team and a group of trailers on set. Neither Marvel nor Downey has confirmed a figure.
Filming on Doomsday took place in England from April to September 2025.
Team Downey and other businesses
Team Downey
Downey and his wife, Susan Downey, founded the production company Team Downey in 2010. Its projects include:

- Play Dirty (2025), a Shane Black film for Amazon MGM Studios starring Mark Wahlberg
A third Sherlock Holmes film has been in development for years and remains without a release date.
Footprint Coalition
Downey announced Footprint Coalition in 2019 and launched it in 2020. Its goal is to use technologies such as robotics and nanotechnology to clean up the environment.
In January 2021 he followed with FootPrint Coalition Ventures, a set of venture funds for sustainable-technology startups. Early investments included insect-protein maker Ÿnsect, Cloud Paper, RWDC Industries, Arcadia Earth and the fintech firm Aspiration. The size of his personal stake has not been made public.
Cars
Downey is a serious car collector. In his 2023 series Downey’s Dream Cars, he and a team converted several classic cars from his collection to cleaner fuel and electric power. The show won a Daytime Emmy.
Real estate
Downey splits his time between Southern California and Long Island.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Malibu estate (main family home) | Not confirmed | Reportedly about $13.4 million |
| Malibu cliffside home overlooking Malibu Lagoon | 2017 | About $3.8 million |
| Windmill cottage estate, East Hampton, New York | 2017 | Reportedly about $11.9 million |
The Malibu estate is known for its large grounds, which reportedly include enclosures for the family’s animals. The East Hampton property centers on a converted windmill built in the 1880s and sits on about four acres. The Downeys married nearby, in Amagansett, in 2005.
Personal life
Downey dated actress Sarah Jessica Parker from 1984 to 1991. He married singer and actress Deborah Falconer in 1992. Their son, Indio, was born in 1993, and the couple divorced in 2004.
He met producer Susan Levin on the set of Gothika, and they married on August 27, 2005. They have two children: a son, Exton, born in 2012, and a daughter, Avri, born in 2014. Susan Downey is his business partner at Team Downey.
His father, Robert Downey Sr., died in July 2021.
Philanthropy
Downey’s giving is tied closely to his own story and interests:
- Anti-Recidivism Coalition: he serves on the board of this group, which helps people leaving prison rebuild their lives.
- Footprint Coalition: funds and promotes environmental clean-up technology.
- Bionic arm: in 2015 he presented a 3D-printed “Iron Man” prosthetic arm to a 7-year-old boy as part of a project with the nonprofit Limbitless Solutions.
