Early life
Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Her father, William Mebarak Chadid, was a jeweler of Lebanese descent, and her mother is Nidia Ripoll Torrado.
Money was tight for part of her childhood. Her father’s business went bankrupt when she was eight, and the family had to sell many of its belongings. Seeing poor children in a local park during that time later inspired her charity work.
She wrote her first song at around age eight and became known locally for her belly dancing and singing. At 13, she signed a recording deal with Sony Music Colombia.
Early career and Latin breakthrough
Her first two albums were commercial failures. Magia (1991) sold only about 1,200 copies, and Peligro (1993) did little better.
Everything changed with Pies Descalzos in 1995. The album sold more than 5 million copies and made her a star across Latin America. Its follow-up, ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998), sold more than 7 million copies.
Her live album MTV Unplugged (2000) won her a first Grammy, for Best Latin Pop Album.
Global crossover: Laundry Service and Oral Fixation
Shakira learned English to write her first English-language album, Laundry Service (2001). Led by “Whenever, Wherever,” it sold more than 13 million copies worldwide and turned her into a global pop star.
In 2005 she released a two-part project: Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 in Spanish and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 in English. Together they sold more than 13 million copies. Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 won a Grammy.
The re-released version of Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 included “Hips Don’t Lie” with Wyclef Jean. It became her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and one of the best-selling singles of the 21st century.
Tour grosses over the years
| Tour | Years | Reported gross |
|---|---|---|
| Oral Fixation Tour | 2006–2007 | About $100 million (119 shows) |
| The Sun Comes Out World Tour | 2010–2011 | About $69 million for the 2011 leg |
| Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour | 2025–2026 | $534.4 million (118 reported shows) |
She Wolf, Waka Waka and the Live Nation era
In July 2008, Shakira left her traditional touring setup and signed a 10-year deal with Live Nation covering tours, recordings, sponsorship and merchandise. Industry estimates put its value at $70 million to $100 million.
She followed with She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010). That same year she recorded “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)”, the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. It became the best-selling World Cup song ever.
In 2011 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Billboard later named her the Top Female Latin Artist of both the 2000s and the 2010s.
TV, film and the El Dorado years
Shakira joined The Voice as a coach for seasons 4 and 6, in 2013 and 2014. She also voiced the pop star Gazelle in Disney’s Zootopia (2016) and returned for Zootopia 2 (2025).
Her self-titled English album Shakira came out in 2014. Her Spanish-language album El Dorado (2017) won the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album and has passed 10 billion streams.
On February 2, 2020, her 43rd birthday, she co-headlined the Super Bowl LIV halftime show in Miami with Jennifer Lopez.
Bzrp, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran and a career peak
In January 2023, Shakira released “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Argentine producer Bizarrap. The song, aimed at her ex-partner, hit No. 1 in 16 countries and set 14 Guinness World Records.
Her 12th studio album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (March 2024), topped Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. It won the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album in 2025, her fourth Grammy.
In 2026 she recorded “Dai Dai” with Burna Boy as a song for the FIFA World Cup. She performed at the tournament’s opening ceremony in June and at the final’s halftime show in July. She was also nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2026 but was not inducted.
Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour earnings
The tour opened in Rio de Janeiro on February 11, 2025, and closed with a residency in Madrid in October 2026. It grew from a planned arena run into a stadium tour as demand surged, with many added dates in Mexico, South America and the U.S.
Its box office grew quickly:
- October 2025: $327.4 million and 2.5 million tickets from 64 shows (Billboard)
- January 2026: $421.6 million and 3.3 million tickets from 86 shows (Billboard)
- October 2026: $534.4 million and more than 4 million tickets from 118 reported shows (Pollstar)
Guinness World Records recognized it as the highest-grossing tour ever by a Latin artist. It also ranks among the five highest-grossing tours by a female artist.
Some highlights:
- Mexico City: a record seven sold-out shows at Estadio GNP Seguros
- Latin America: about 950,000 tickets sold across 18 stadium dates in under two hours
- Rio de Janeiro: a free concert on Copacabana Beach on May 2, 2026, drew an estimated 2 million people
- Madrid: a 13-show residency at a purpose-built “Shakira Stadium” from September 18 to October 12, 2026. The first nine shows alone grossed $61.3 million and sold 452,097 tickets.
Not every date went ahead. Several U.S. shows were cancelled or moved in 2025, and planned dates in Abu Dhabi, Jordan and Qatar were cancelled or postponed in 2026 because of the war involving Iran.
A tour’s gross is not the same as the artist’s pay. Production, crew, venue and promoter costs take a large share. Forbes’ $105 million estimate for her 2025 earnings shows how much of the first year’s ticket money reached her after those costs and fees.
Business ventures and brand deals
Shakira has turned her fame into several side businesses:
- Fragrance: a long-running perfume line made with the Spanish beauty group Puig.
- Ísima: a hair-care brand she launched in July 2025, sold exclusively at Ulta Beauty and aimed at Latin hair types.
- Catalog sale: in January 2021 she sold 100% of her publishing rights to 145 songs to Hipgnosis Songs Fund. The price was not disclosed, but it gave her a large one-time payment for her older songwriting royalties.
- Endorsements: over the years she has promoted brands such as Pepsi and Freixenet.
The Spanish tax cases
Shakira’s biggest financial risk in recent years came from Spain’s tax agency. Officials argued she lived in Spain for most of the year after her relationship with Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué began, and so owed Spanish taxes on her worldwide income. She said she was a resident of the Bahamas until 2015.
2012–2014: settlement in 2023
Prosecutors in Barcelona accused her of failing to pay €14.5 million in taxes on income from 2012 to 2014. On the first day of her trial in November 2023, she settled.
She accepted a three-year suspended sentence, paid a fine of about €7.3 million and made an additional payment. The trial ended after only a few minutes, and she did not go to prison.
2018: case shelved
A separate investigation claimed she used an offshore company to avoid about €6.7 million in taxes for 2018. In May 2024, a court shelved it after prosecutors said there was not enough evidence.
2011: cleared in May 2026
On May 18, 2026, Spain’s National Court (Audiencia Nacional) ruled in her favor on her 2011 income and wealth taxes. It found the tax agency could prove only 163 days in Spain that year, short of the 183 days needed for tax residency. It also found Spain was not the main center of her activities.
The court cancelled the tax bill and penalties and ordered the state to return more than €55 million (about $64 million), or roughly €60 million with interest. It also made the tax agency pay legal costs, which is unusual.
In June 2026 the tax agency said it would appeal to Spain’s Supreme Court. It has said no money will be refunded until the case is final, so the payout is not yet in her bank account.
Real estate
Shakira has owned homes in Florida and Spain. Reported deals include:
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Miami Beach waterfront mansion (North Bay Road), bought | 2001 | About $3.38 million |
| Same Miami Beach mansion, listed for sale | 2013 | About $14.95 million asking |
| Same Miami Beach mansion, relisted | 2021 | About $15.9 million asking |
| Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona) house, sold with Piqué | 2025 | More than €3 million |
| Two connected Esplugues homes, listed with Piqué | 2025 | About €10.99 million asking |
The Miami Beach home sits on Biscayne Bay and has about 8,000 square feet of living space. In Spain, she and Piqué bought three neighboring houses in Esplugues de Llobregat near Barcelona to create a family compound. After their split, they began selling them.
Personal life
Shakira dated Argentine lawyer Antonio de la Rúa, son of a former Argentine president, from 2000 to 2010. He later sued her for a share of her earnings during their relationship, but a New York judge dismissed the case in 2013.
In 2010 she met Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué during the World Cup. They never married but had two sons: Milan, born in 2013, and Sasha, born in 2015. The couple announced their separation in June 2022.
In 2023 Shakira moved with her sons from Barcelona to Miami, where she is based today.

Shakira has worked on children’s education for decades:
