Early life
Travis Michael Kelce was born on October 5, 1989, in Westlake, Ohio, and grew up in Cleveland Heights. His father, Ed, worked in steel-industry sales, and his mother, Donna, was a bank executive. His older brother, Jason Kelce, went on to become a star center for the Philadelphia Eagles.
At Cleveland Heights High School, Kelce played quarterback and was a multi-sport athlete. He followed Jason to the University of Cincinnati, where he started as a quarterback.
His college career nearly ended early. Cincinnati suspended him for the 2010 season after he tested positive for marijuana. He came back as a tight end, and in 2012 he set career highs with 45 catches for 722 yards, enough to put him on NFL draft boards.
Draft and early NFL career (2013–2017)
The Chiefs took Kelce in the third round, 63rd overall, of the 2013 NFL draft. His rookie contract was worth about $3.1 million over four years. He played just one game as a rookie before having knee surgery.
He became a full-time starter in 2014 and made his first Pro Bowl in 2015. In January 2016 the Chiefs rewarded him with a five-year, $46.8 million extension that included a $10 million signing bonus, his first big payday.
In 2016 he topped 1,000 receiving yards for the first time and was named first-team All-Pro. It was the start of a record run of seven straight 1,000-yard seasons by a tight end.
The Mahomes era and three Super Bowls (2018–2024)
Everything changed in 2018 when Patrick Mahomes became the Chiefs’ starting quarterback. The two quickly became the most dangerous passing duo in the league, and Kelce’s numbers and paychecks climbed with them.
Kansas City won Super Bowl LIV in February 2020. Six months later Kelce signed a four-year, $57.25 million extension, which made him the highest-paid tight end at the time. That season he set the NFL record for receiving yards by a tight end, with 1,416.
The titles kept coming. The Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII in February 2023 and Super Bowl LVIII in February 2024, becoming the first back-to-back champions in nearly two decades. In April 2024 the team gave Kelce a two-year, $34.25 million deal that once again made him the NFL’s best-paid tight end at about $17.1 million a year.
Along the way he set the record for most career postseason catches and, in Super Bowl LIX in February 2025, the record for most Super Bowl receptions (35). The Chiefs lost that game to the Eagles.
Late career, the 2026 contract and retirement talk
The 2025 season was a hard one. Kansas City finished 6–11 and missed the playoffs, and Kelce caught 76 passes for 851 yards and five touchdowns, his lowest catch total since 2015. He still broke the franchise record for career touchdowns.
He had said he would not decide on retirement until after the season. In March 2026 he chose to come back. Early reports called the deal three years and $54.7 million, but Spotrac and Over The Cap show it is really a one-year, $12 million contract, fully guaranteed, with two “void” years added only to spread out the salary cap hit.
The deal also includes up to $3 million in incentives: $2 million tied to playing time and $1 million for a Super Bowl run. It gives Kelce until June 2027 to decide whether to retire, at which point the Chiefs can handle about $7.1 million in leftover cap charges.
Through his first six games of the 2026 season he had 24 catches for 343 yards and two touchdowns. No retirement has been announced as of November 2026.
New Heights podcast
Travis and Jason launched New Heights in September 2022. The weekly show mixes football talk, family stories and a lot of jokes, and it quickly became one of the most popular podcasts in the U.S. It has won Podcast of the Year at the iHeartPodcast Awards and Sports Podcast of the Year from Sports Illustrated.
In August 2024 the brothers signed a three-year deal with Amazon’s Wondery worth more than $100 million. Wondery got exclusive ad-sales rights, global distribution of the back catalog and merchandise rights, while the show stayed free on all podcast apps and YouTube.
The show’s biggest moment came on August 13, 2025, when Taylor Swift appeared to announce her album The Life of a Showgirl. The YouTube premiere drew 1.3 million concurrent viewers, a Guinness World Record for a podcast, and the episode passed 10 million views in under a day.
The deal puts the Kelces in the same league as other former players turned media stars, such as Shannon Sharpe, who also built a big business around a podcast.
Endorsements
Kelce’s fame jumped after he began dating Swift in 2023, and brands followed. On Forbes’ 2025 list of the NFL’s highest-paid players, he ranked eighth with about $47.3 million in earnings. Only $17.3 million of that was salary; about $30 million came from off the field. He is still far from the richest athletes in the world, but few non-quarterbacks earn as much from sponsors.
His sponsors have included:
- Nike and Tommy Hilfiger (ambassador from 2026)
- Bud Light and McDonald’s
- Pfizer, with ads for COVID-19 and flu vaccines
- State Farm, alongside Patrick Mahomes
- Campbell’s Soup and Old Spice
- Six Flags and Sleep Number
Business ventures and investments
Kelce has turned his fame into a growing list of business stakes. The value of his share in each one has not been made public.
- Garage Beer: Travis and Jason became owners and operators of the Cincinnati beer brand in June 2024. The Wall Street Journal reported in September 2025 that a private equity investment valued the company at about $200 million, with revenue expected to triple to $60 million to $70 million. Garage Beer also bought into the St. Joseph Goats arena football team.
- Alpine F1: In October 2023 he and Mahomes joined an investor group, alongside golfer Rory McIlroy, that put about $200 million into the Alpine Formula 1 team.
- Cleveland Guardians: In May 2026 he bought a minority stake in his hometown baseball team. Forbes values the Guardians at about $1.66 billion.
- 1587 Prime: a Kansas City steakhouse he co-owns with Mahomes. The name combines their jersey numbers.
- Tru Kolors and Hilo: he founded the Tru Kolors clothing brand and the Hilo Nutrition gummy brand. Forbes reports that a private equity firm acquired Hilo.
- Other stakes: he co-owns Club Car Wash and was an early investor in Cholula hot sauce, which sold for $800 million in 2020.
Not every investment has worked out. In September 2026, prosecutors named Kelce as one of the victims of Sid Jawahar, an investment fund co-founder who was sentenced to 11 years in prison for wire fraud tied to a Ponzi scheme. How much Kelce lost has not been disclosed.
TV and acting
Kelce has been building a career for life after football. His work outside the NFL includes:
- Catching Kelce (2016), an E! dating show
- Hosting Saturday Night Live in March 2023
- Hosting Amazon Prime Video’s Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? (2024)
- A dramatic role in Ryan Murphy’s FX series Grotesquerie (2024)
- A role in Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2 (2025)
He also launched the Kelce Jam music festival in Kansas City.
Real estate
Kelce has kept his property holdings close to Kansas City. Swift’s much larger portfolio of homes in Nashville, New York, Rhode Island and Los Angeles is separate.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Briarcliff West home, Kansas City, Missouri | 2019 | About $995,000 |
| Leawood, Kansas mansion | 2023 | About $6 million |
The Leawood mansion has about 17,000 square feet on more than three acres, with a two-level home theater, a pickleball court and a mini golf course. He reportedly paid cash and began adding an underground lounge in 2024. Property records show he kept his earlier Briarcliff home after the move.
Forbes has also noted that he owns a Rolls-Royce Phantom worth about $400,000.
Personal life
Kelce began dating Taylor Swift in the summer of 2023, after he mentioned on his podcast that he had tried to give her a friendship bracelet at one of her concerts. Her trips to Chiefs games became a national story.
The couple announced their engagement on August 26, 2025. They married on July 3, 2026, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, in a ceremony officiated by Adam Sandler before about 1,000 guests. Guests included Patrick Mahomes, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence, and performers included Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks and Ice Spice.
Estimates of the wedding’s cost range from about $10 million to $50 million, depending on the outlet. Forbes put it at no less than $20 million. Swift’s fortune of about $2 billion is far larger than Kelce’s. The details of any prenuptial agreement have not been made public, so this article counts only Kelce’s own assets.
Philanthropy
In 2015 Kelce started the Eighty-Seven & Running foundation, which supports young people from underserved communities in Kansas City and Cleveland. Its projects include a robotics lab and a STEM coworking space in Kansas City, plus a “Catching for a Cause” pledge tied to his receptions.
In the week before their wedding, Kelce and Swift reportedly donated about $26 million to more than 20 charities.
