Since 2024 he has added a TV career, a best-selling book and a five-year contract with the University of North Carolina worth a reported $10 million a year. As of November 2026, he is in his second season with the Tar Heels.

Early life
William Stephen Belichick was born on April 16, 1952, in Nashville, Tennessee. His father, Steve Belichick, was an assistant coach and longtime scout at the U.S. Naval Academy, and his mother, Jeannette, taught languages.
He grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, where he watched game film with his father from a young age. He graduated from Annapolis High School in 1970 and spent a postgraduate year at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.
He then went to Wesleyan University in Connecticut, where he played football, lacrosse and squash. He earned a degree in economics in 1975.
Early NFL career and the Giants years
Belichick started in 1975 as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts, a job that paid about $25 a week. He moved on to the Detroit Lions and the Denver Broncos before joining the New York Giants in 1979.
Under head coach Bill Parcells he became the Giants’ defensive coordinator in 1985. His defenses helped New York win Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXV. His game plan for Super Bowl XXV, against the Buffalo Bills, is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Giants also employed quarterback Phil Simms during most of those years, and the two would later work together on TV.
Cleveland Browns head coach
In 1991, at 38, Belichick became head coach of the Cleveland Browns. He went 36–44 in five seasons and won one playoff game, in January 1995.
The team was announced to be moving to Baltimore late in the 1995 season, and Belichick was fired in February 1996. He then spent four years as an assistant to Parcells, first in New England and then with the New York Jets.
Patriots dynasty
In January 2000, Belichick resigned as Jets head coach after one day and was hired by the New England Patriots. He ran both the coaching staff and the roster, acting as the team’s de facto general manager.
The results made him the most successful coach of his era:
- Record: 266–121 in the regular season and 30–12 in the playoffs
- Division titles: 17 AFC East titles
- Super Bowl wins: XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI and LIII
Some of those wins came against today’s stars. In Super Bowl XLIX the Patriots beat Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. In January 2019 they beat Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in overtime in the AFC Championship Game on the way to their sixth title.
Winning made him expensive. In December 2022 Sportico reported that he was earning about $20 million a year, the highest salary of any coach in the major North American leagues.
After quarterback Tom Brady left in 2020, the team declined. The Patriots went 4–13 in 2023, and on January 11, 2024, Belichick and owner Robert Kraft agreed to part ways.
TV career: McAfee, ManningCast and Inside the NFL
Belichick did not get an NFL head coaching job for the 2024 season, so he turned to television. In August 2024 he finalized several media deals at once:
- The Pat McAfee Show: a weekly Monday guest spot on Pat McAfee‘s ESPN show
- ManningCast: a featured guest on all 11 of Peyton and Eli Manning’s alternate Monday Night Football broadcasts on ESPN2
- The Breakdown: a Friday preview show he co-hosted with Peyton Manning on ESPN+
- Inside the NFL: an analyst on the long-running NFL Films show on The CW
Pay for these deals was never made public. The Athletic reported that the ESPN and Omaha Productions work alone was worth “millions”. Higher figures, such as the claim that he was making $10 million a year from media, came from commentators and were never confirmed.
His TV run lasted one season. When he took the North Carolina job in December 2024, he stepped away from regular media work.
North Carolina Tar Heels
On December 11, 2024, UNC named Belichick its 35th head football coach. It was his first college job, at age 72.
Contract details
His contract runs five years and pays about $10 million a year in base and supplemental pay. Only the first three years are guaranteed by the university.
He can earn up to about $3.5 million a year in bonuses. These include $150,000 to $350,000 for 8 to 12 wins, up to $1.75 million for winning the College Football Playoff, and $250,000 for national Coach of the Year.
The buyout was designed around a possible NFL return. He would have owed UNC $10 million if he had left before June 1, 2025. After that date his buyout fell to $1 million.
2025 season
Year one went badly. UNC finished 4–8 and 2–6 in the ACC, missing a bowl game. Offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens was let go after the season and replaced by Bobby Petrino.
In January 2026 Belichick was also not elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, a decision that drew wide criticism.
2026 season so far
The second season has been closer but no less turbulent. In September 2026 general manager Michael Lombardi and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, Bill’s son, both resigned after a university review of the program’s “culture and climate.”
On the field, the team improved:
- A 15–10 win over TCU in Dublin, Ireland, to open the season
- A 21–17 win over No. 25 Pittsburgh on October 10, his first win over a ranked team at UNC
- A 38–35 loss to No. 1 Miami on October 31, after leading in the fourth quarter
As of November 5, 2026, UNC is 4–4 and 2–3 in the ACC, and Belichick remains head coach. His job security is a frequent topic in college football coverage, but he is still owed his guaranteed salary through the 2027 season.
Book: The Art of Winning
In 2024 Belichick agreed to write a book on leadership. The Athletic reported that the advance was “well into the seven figures.”
The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football was published by Simon & Schuster in May 2025. It covers his coaching methods, team building and the lessons he learned from his father, and it made the best-seller lists after release.
Endorsements and business
For most of his career Belichick did few endorsements. That changed after he left the Patriots. In 2024 he signed with the fantasy sports app Underdog Fantasy.
In August 2025, a company called TCE Rights Management, run by his partner at the time Jordon Hudson, filed 17 trademark applications tied to his name and image. The filings point to plans for licensed merchandise, but no revenue figures have been reported.
Real estate
Belichick’s property portfolio is centered on Massachusetts. For years he lived in Hingham, a town south of Boston, and he has spent summers on Nantucket for decades.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Hingham, Massachusetts home (about 3,500 sq ft) | 2006 | $1.4 million |
| ‘Sconset beach cottage, 3 North Gully Road, Nantucket | 2014 | $2.45 million |
| Same cottage, sold | 2025 | $3.795 million |
| Fair Street home, downtown Nantucket | 2024 | $4.8 million |
The downtown Nantucket house has four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. The Boston Globe reported that he still owns several other properties in ‘Sconset, including a lot on North Gully Road where he is building a new home.
The Hingham house was later valued at about $2.2 million. Since taking the UNC job, he also spends much of the year in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Personal life
Belichick married Debby Clarke in 1977. They had three children, Amanda, Stephen and Brian, and divorced in 2006. Amanda coaches women’s lacrosse, and Stephen and Brian both followed him into coaching and onto his staffs.
From 2007 to 2023 he was in a long relationship with Linda Holliday. Since late 2024 he has been publicly linked to Jordon Hudson, a former college cheerleader born in 2001. In October 2026 TMZ and People reported that the two had split in 2025 but stayed close and kept their business ties. Belichick said he would keep his personal relationships to himself.
In January 2021 he declined the Presidential Medal of Freedom offered by Donald Trump, after the attack on the U.S. Capitol. In June 2024 he received Croatian citizenship, through his father’s family roots.
Philanthropy
Belichick has supported youth sports and education, often quietly. The Bill Belichick Foundation has backed youth programs, especially in lacrosse.
He also donated his and his father’s large collection of football books to the U.S. Naval Academy, where his father worked for more than 30 years.
How Bill Belichick compares
Belichick earned more than any coach of his era, but he is not as rich as the star players and TV personalities who made money from huge contracts and endorsements. Here is how he stacks up against others from football and sports TV.
| Person | Net worth | Main source |
|---|---|---|
| Bill Belichick | About $70 million | Coaching salaries, media, book |
| Russell Wilson | About $165 million | NFL contracts, endorsements |
| Charles Barkley | About $90 million | NBA salary, TV contracts |
