Early life
Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg was born on June 5, 1971, in Dorchester, a working-class part of Boston. He is the youngest of nine children. His mother, Alma, worked as a bank clerk and nurse’s aide, and his father, Donald, was a delivery driver and Korean War veteran. His parents divorced in 1982.
His teenage years were troubled. He dropped out of high school, used drugs and had several run-ins with police. At 16 he was convicted of assault for attacking two Vietnamese-American men and served 45 days in jail. He has since apologized publicly and says the experience pushed him to change his life.
He later went back to school and earned his high school diploma (GED) in 2013, decades after leaving school.
Music career: Marky Mark
Wahlberg’s older brother Donnie was a founding member of New Kids on the Block. Mark joined the group briefly at 13 but left after a few months.
In 1990 he started his own act, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Their debut album, Music for the People (1991), produced the single “Good Vibrations,” which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum. A second single, “Wildside,” reached the top 10.
A second album, You Gotta Believe (1992), sold far less. Around the same time, Wahlberg became famous as a Calvin Klein underwear model, appearing in black-and-white ads shot by photographer Herb Ritts. The music faded, but the fame gave him an opening in Hollywood.
Hollywood breakthrough (1993–2005)
Wahlberg made his acting debut in a 1993 TV movie and his feature debut in Renaissance Man (1994). He played a key role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Basketball Diaries (1995) and had his first lead in the thriller Fear (1996).
His breakout came with Boogie Nights (1997), Paul Thomas Anderson’s film about the adult film industry. Critics praised his performance, and it turned him from a former pop star into a serious actor.
Big studio work followed:
- Three Kings (1999) with George Clooney
- The Perfect Storm (2000), a major summer hit
- Planet of the Apes (2001), Tim Burton’s remake
- The Italian Job (2003), a heist remake that became one of his most popular films
- Four Brothers (2005) and Invincible (2006)
The Departed, The Fighter and peak stardom (2006–2013)
Martin Scorsese cast Wahlberg as a foul-mouthed police sergeant in The Departed (2006). The film won Best Picture, and Wahlberg earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
He spent years getting The Fighter (2010) made, a boxing drama about Massachusetts fighter Micky Ward. He starred, trained for years and served as a producer, reportedly taking a small fee. The film was nominated for Best Picture, giving Wahlberg his second Oscar nomination, this time as a producer.
Comedy then made him even more bankable. The Other Guys (2010) and especially Ted (2012), Seth MacFarlane’s film about a foul-mouthed teddy bear, were big hits. Ted grossed more than $500 million worldwide.
Franchise paydays (2014–2019)
In 2014 Wahlberg replaced Shia LaBeouf as the lead of the Transformers series. Transformers: Age of Extinction grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, and he returned for Transformers: The Last Knight (2017).
He also teamed with Will Ferrell on Daddy’s Home (2015) and Daddy’s Home 2 (2017), and made a string of true-story dramas with director Peter Berg: Lone Survivor (2013), Deepwater Horizon (2016) and Patriots Day (2016).
This run led to his best year. Forbes estimated he earned $68 million between June 2016 and June 2017, more than any other actor, ahead of Dwayne Johnson ($65 million) and Vin Diesel ($54.5 million).
The same period brought a pay controversy. When All the Money in the World needed reshoots in late 2017, reports showed Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million while co-star Michelle Williams received less than $1,000. Wahlberg donated the full $1.5 million to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in her name.
King of streaming (2020–2026)
Since 2020 Wahlberg has focused heavily on streaming movies. Netflix’s Spenser Confidential (2020) helped him earn $58 million that year, third on Forbes’ list. Other streaming hits include:
- The Family Plan (2023), which Apple says was its most-watched film ever
- The Union (2024) with Halle Berry on Netflix
- Play Dirty (Prime Video, 2025) and The Family Plan 2 (Apple TV, 2025)
Forbes reported in late 2025 that he had starred in seven streaming films since 2020, typically earning $20 million to $25 million per project. He also stayed active in theaters with Uncharted (2022), which grossed about $407 million, Flight Risk (2025) and the mob drama By Any Means, which Paramount released in September 2026.
Producing: Entourage, Boardwalk Empire and more
Wahlberg’s producing work, much of it with longtime partner Stephen Levinson, is a steady second income stream.
- Entourage (HBO, 2004–2011): loosely based on Wahlberg’s own early years in Hollywood. Forbes reported in 2008 that he earned about $3 million a year from the show. It ran eight seasons and was followed by a 2015 movie.
- Boardwalk Empire (HBO, 2010–2014): a Prohibition-era drama with Martin Scorsese as a fellow executive producer. It won multiple Emmys.
- In Treatment, How to Make It in America and Ballers (HBO, 2015–2019), the Dwayne Johnson football comedy.
- Wahlburgers (A&E, 2014–2019), the reality show about the family restaurant, and HBO’s documentary series McMillions (2020).
He has also produced many of his own films, including The Fighter, Lone Survivor and Father Stu (2022), a faith drama he partly funded himself.
Business ventures
Wahlberg is one of Hollywood’s most active celebrity investors. His main ventures:
Wahlburgers
Mark, Donnie and Paul Wahlberg opened the first Wahlburgers in Hingham, Massachusetts, in 2011, with Paul as chef. The A&E show turned it into a national brand, and franchising pushed it past 100 locations by 2023. Many of those were small outlets inside Hy-Vee grocery stores, which closed in early 2025, cutting the count to about 32. The original Hingham restaurant closed in September 2026 when its lease ended.
Performance Inspired and fitness
Wahlberg co-founded Performance Inspired Nutrition with business partner Tom Dowd in 2016. It sells protein powders and supplements. Earlier, from 2012, he backed a GNC supplement line called Marked.
In 2019 he invested in Australian gym chain F45 Training. His investment group’s deal valued the company at about $450 million. F45 went public on the New York Stock Exchange in July 2021 at a value of about $1.4 billion, and Wahlberg later became its chief brand officer. The stock then collapsed by more than 95%, and the company faced lawsuits, including one from David Beckham over shares owed for promotional work.
Municipal
Municipal is an athletic apparel brand Wahlberg co-founded in 2020 with former video game executive Harry Arnett. It opened its first flagship store in Oceanside, California, in late 2024 and is building a luxury gym of about 32,000 square feet in Downtown Summerlin, Las Vegas, set to open in 2026.
Car dealerships
In 2018 Wahlberg teamed up with Ohio car dealer Jay Feldman to buy a Chevrolet dealership in Columbus, renamed Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet. The partnership kept buying, including a store in Avon, Ohio, and an RV dealership, and grew to around five locations by 2021.
Flecha Azul, AQUAhydrate and other stakes
- Flecha Azul tequila: founded in 2020 by Aron Marquez and pro golfer Abraham Ancer. Wahlberg made a large investment and became a partner and the face of the brand around 2022. It sold about 33,000 cases in 2022.
- AQUAhydrate: a bottled water brand Wahlberg backed alongside Sean Combs and Ron Burkle. The Alkaline Water Company agreed to acquire it in 2019.
- StockX (sneaker resale, 2017) and a stake in the Barbados Tridents cricket team (2013).
- Paid endorsements, including AT&T ads.
The move to Las Vegas
In 2022 Wahlberg moved his family from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. He said he wanted a better life for his children and hoped to help build a film industry in Nevada. He also bought, sold and built property there quickly, as the table below shows.
Real estate
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Beverly Park, Beverly Hills: 6.2-acre lot (bought) | 2009 | $8.25 million |
| Beverly Park mansion, about 30,500 sq ft (sold) | 2023 | $55 million (first listed at $87.5 million) |
| Summit Club, Las Vegas: 2.5-acre lot (bought) | 2022 | $15.6 million |

| Mansion near Delray Beach, Florida (bought) | 2025 | $37 million, furnished |
The Beverly Park estate was his signature home. He bought the land in 2009 and finished a French-style mansion there in 2014. After a $55 million sale in 2023, the house changed hands again in 2025, when Paris Hilton bought it for a reported $63 million.
In Las Vegas he dropped plans for a 37,000-square-foot custom mansion and sold the land in December 2024 for a gain of about $1.65 million. In October 2025 he bought a 26,000-square-foot estate in Florida’s Stone Creek Ranch area for $37 million.
Personal life
Wahlberg began dating model Rhea Durham in 2001, and they married on August 1, 2009, in Beverly Hills. They have four children: Ella, Michael, Brendan and Grace.
He is a devout Catholic and often talks about his faith, which inspired Father Stu. He is also known for an extreme early-morning workout routine, which he has turned into a business through Municipal and Performance Inspired.
His brothers are also public figures: Donnie is an actor and New Kids on the Block singer, Paul runs the Wahlburgers kitchen, and Robert is an actor.
