Early life

Jennifer Shrader Lawrence was born on August 15, 1990, in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father, Gary, owned a construction company, and her mother, Karen, managed a summer camp. She grew up with two older brothers, Ben and Blaine.

She had her first acting part at age nine in a church play. At 14, while on a family trip to New York City, she was spotted by a talent scout.

She signed with an agency, moved to Los Angeles with her family’s support and left school at 14. She has said she has no high school diploma or GED, which makes her rise all the more striking.

Early career and Winter’s Bone

Lawrence started with small TV roles on shows such as Monk and Medium. From 2007 to 2009 she was a series regular on TBS’s The Bill Engvall Show, her first steady paycheck in Hollywood.

Her film work began with Garden Party and The Burning Plain (both 2008). The second won her the Marcello Mastroianni Award for young actors at the Venice Film Festival.

The breakthrough was Winter’s Bone (2010), a low-budget drama that paid her about $3,000 a week. It earned her a first Oscar nomination for Best Actress at age 20 and put her on every casting director’s list.

The Hunger Games and an Oscar

In 2011 she joined a blockbuster franchise as the young Mystique in X-Men: First Class. She went on to play the role in three more X-Men films, ending with Dark Phoenix in 2019.

Her life changed with The Hunger Games (2012). Playing Katniss Everdeen, she led a series of four films that together grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide. Her pay rose from about $500,000 on the first film to about $10 million on Catching Fire.

The same year, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook. She was 22, one of the youngest winners in the category’s history.

She followed it with American Hustle (2013), which won her a Golden Globe and a BAFTA and earned another Oscar nomination. She later won a third Golden Globe and a fourth Oscar nomination for Joy (2015).

Highest-paid actress in the world

By 2015, with the two Mockingjay films in theaters, Lawrence was at the top of Hollywood’s pay scale. Forbes named her the highest-paid actress in the world in both 2015 and 2016.

She used that leverage to sign big deals for original films:

  • Passengers (2016): a reported $20 million fee plus a share of profits, opposite Chris Pratt
  • Mother! (2017): a divisive psychological thriller from Darren Aronofsky
  • Red Sparrow (2018): a reported $20 million for the spy thriller

In 2015 she also wrote a widely read essay about learning she had been paid less than her male co-stars on American Hustle. It helped push the debate over the gender pay gap in Hollywood.

A break, Excellent Cadaver and Don’t Look Up

After Dark Phoenix in 2019, Lawrence stepped back from acting for about two years. In 2018 she had founded her production company, Excellent Cadaver, which she now runs with producing partner Justine Ciarrocchi.

She returned with Netflix’s Don’t Look Up (2021), opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Her reported $25 million fee is the largest single payday of her career and earned her another Golden Globe nomination.

Excellent Cadaver’s first releases came soon after:

  • Causeway (2022): a small drama for Apple TV+; co-star Brian Tyree Henry was nominated for an Oscar
  • Bread and Roses (2023): a documentary about Afghan women under Taliban rule, which later won a Peabody Award
  • No Hard Feelings (2023): a Sony comedy that grossed more than $89 million worldwide and earned her a Golden Globe nomination
  • Zurawski v Texas (2024): a documentary on abortion rights she executive produced

Die My Love and her 2026 slate

Die My Love, a dark drama directed by Lynne Ramsay and co-produced by Martin Scorsese, premiered at Cannes in May 2025. Distributor Mubi paid $24 million for the film, its largest purchase ever.

The film was a modest earner in theaters, grossing about $12.2 million worldwide after its November 2025 release. It found a larger audience on Mubi’s streaming service, and Lawrence earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Drama, though she missed out on an Oscar nomination.

Also in 2025, she became the youngest person to receive the Donostia Award, the career honor of the San Sebastián Film Festival.

Her upcoming projects show she is still one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood:

  • The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (November 20, 2026): she and Josh Hutcherson return as Katniss and Peeta in the Lionsgate prequel
  • What Happens at Night: a Martin Scorsese film for Apple co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio, in post-production in 2026 and co-produced by Excellent Cadaver
  • The Wives: a murder mystery for Apple and A24 that she will star in and produce
  • One Month Mark: a romantic comedy Apple acquired in June 2026, with Lawrence attached to star and produce

Her pay for these films has not been reported.

Endorsements and business

Lawrence has been the face of Dior since 2012, appearing in handbag, fashion and fragrance campaigns. The deal has been reported to be worth $15 million or more over its life, making it her biggest brand relationship. She wore a custom Dior gown at her wedding.

Her main business is Excellent Cadaver. It signed a first-look deal with financier Makeready in 2018 and has since built relationships with Apple, A24 and Disney, where it is developing a Miss Piggy film with Emma Stone’s company. Producer credits give Lawrence fees and, on some projects, a share of profits on top of her acting pay.

Unlike many stars, she has not launched a beauty, liquor or fashion brand of her own.

Real estate

Lawrence’s property record is mixed: a big loss on a Manhattan penthouse and a solid gain on her Beverly Hills home.

Property Year Reported price
Beverly Hills (Hidden Valley) home, bought 2014 About $8.2 million
Upper East Side penthouse (The Laurel), bought 2016 About $15.5 million
Tribeca condo, bought 2017 Not disclosed
Upper East Side penthouse, sold 2020 $9.9 million
Beverly Hills home, sold 2025 $11 million

The Upper East Side penthouse sold at a loss of more than $5.5 million, roughly 37% below what she paid. The Beverly Hills house, a French country-style home in a gated community once owned by Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, sold in an off-market deal in September 2025 to a company linked to Cara and Poppy Delevingne.

Lawrence and her family now live mainly in New York City.

Personal life

Lawrence married Cooke Maroney, director of the Gladstone Gallery in New York, on October 19, 2019, at the Belcourt of Newport mansion in Rhode Island. They had been engaged since February 2019.

The couple have two sons. Their first, Cy, was born in February 2022, and their second was born in early 2025. They have kept the children largely out of public view.

Philanthropy

Lawrence’s giving has focused on her hometown and on political reform:

  • She launched the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation in 2015, supporting groups such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Special Olympics
  • In 2016 she pledged $2 million to Kosair Children’s Hospital (now Norton Children’s) in Louisville, which named a cardiac unit after her
  • She sits on the board of RepresentUs, a nonprofit that fights political corruption
  • She has backed reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ causes and Time’s Up, and produced documentaries on these issues
