Early life
Onika Tanya Maraj was born on December 8, 1982, in the Saint James area of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Her father, Robert Maraj, was a financial executive and part-time gospel singer. Her mother, Carol, worked in payroll and accounting and also sang gospel.
She was raised partly by her grandmother in Trinidad, living with about a dozen cousins. At around age five she moved to South Jamaica, Queens, in New York City to join her parents.
She auditioned into the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where she studied drama. After graduating she worked as a server at a Red Lobster in the Bronx, in customer service and as an office manager, while trying to break into acting and music.
Mixtapes and the Young Money deal
From 2002 to 2004 she rapped with a New York group called the Hoodstars. In 2006 she signed a short deal with Dirty Money Entertainment and took the stage name Nicki Minaj.
Her mixtapes Playtime Is Over (2007), Sucka Free (2008) and Beam Me Up Scotty (2009) caught the attention of Lil Wayne. In August 2009 she signed with his label, Young Money Entertainment, distributed by Cash Money and Universal Republic.
The contract let her keep her 360 rights. Many new artists give a label a share of their touring, merchandise and endorsement income. Minaj did not, which has helped her keep more of her earnings ever since.
Pink Friday and pop stardom (2010–2013)
Her debut album, Pink Friday, came out in November 2010. It sold 375,000 copies in its first week, the biggest opening for a female rap album in the 21st century at the time, and later climbed to No. 1. It is certified triple platinum.
The 2011 single “Super Bass” reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 and became one of the best-selling rap songs by a woman. Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012) debuted at No. 1 with 253,000 first-week sales. Its single “Starships” is certified diamond, meaning more than 10 million units in the U.S.
In 2012 Fox hired her as a judge on season 12 of American Idol, alongside Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson. Billboard reported her pay at about $12 million for the season. That deal helped push her Forbes earnings to $29 million in 2013.
The Pinkprint, Queen and film roles (2014–2022)
The Pinkprint (December 2014) debuted at No. 2 with 244,000 units. It included the hit “Anaconda”. Her guest spot on Jessie J and Ariana Grande’s “Bang Bang” also went diamond. The 2015 Pinkprint Tour reportedly grossed about $22 million from 38 shows.
Minaj also took on film work:
- Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), voice role
- The Other Woman (2014), her live-action film debut
- Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016)
- The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), voice role
Queen (2018) debuted at No. 2 and went platinum. In 2020 she scored her first two Hot 100 No. 1s as a featured or lead artist, with the “Say So” remix with Doja Cat and “Trollz” with 6ix9ine. Her first solo No. 1, “Super Freaky Girl,” followed in August 2022.
Pink Friday 2 and the record-breaking world tour (2023–2024)
Minaj released Pink Friday 2 on her 41st birthday, December 8, 2023. It debuted at No. 1 with 228,000 units, giving her three No. 1 albums, the most of any female rapper. It later went platinum and won Album of the Year at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards, a first for a solo woman.
The Pink Friday 2 World Tour ran from March 1, 2024, in Oakland to October 11, 2024, at UBS Arena in New York. Key numbers:
- Total gross: about $108.8 million, based on reported box office data
- Shows: 79 across North America, Europe and North Africa
- Tickets: about 788,000 sold, roughly 95% of capacity
- First North American leg: about $67 million from 439,000 tickets, per Billboard
Even the first leg on its own beat the previous record for a tour by a female rapper, Doja Cat’s $37.3 million Scarlet Tour. Over the full run it became the first tour by a female rapper to pass $100 million. It was nominated for Hip-Hop Tour of the Year at the 2025 Pollstar Awards. In December 2025, RapTV ranked it the sixth highest-grossing rap tour ever.
The tour had some disruptions. In May 2024 Minaj was briefly detained in Amsterdam on suspicion of carrying marijuana, then fined and released. Her Manchester show was moved to June 3, while shows in Amsterdam, Cologne and Bucharest were cancelled.

Recent news: 2025 and 2026
Minaj has spent much of the past year in the headlines for business disputes, lawsuits and politics rather than new music.
- Sixth album on hold: In September 2025 she said her sixth album would arrive on March 27, 2026. On October 15, 2025, she said she would no longer release it and blamed Jay-Z. The March date passed without a release.
- Tidal dispute: Minaj was one of the artist co-owners when Jay-Z relaunched the streaming service Tidal in 2015. In 2025 she publicly claimed that Jay-Z and Roc Nation owed her about $200 million from the Tidal deal. Roc Nation has not confirmed any such debt.
- Politics: She spoke at a United Nations event about violence against Christians in Nigeria in November 2025, and appeared at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in December 2025. On January 28, 2026, she joined President Trump at the launch of “Trump Accounts” and later posted a photo of a Trump Gold Card, the $1 million residency program, saying she got it free of charge. She has said she is finalizing U.S. citizenship.
- Home sale avoided: In January 2026 she paid a $503,000 default judgment owed to former security guard Thomas Weidenmüller, just before a hearing on whether her Hidden Hills house could be sold to cover the debt. He had alleged an assault by Kenneth Petty at a 2019 show in Germany.
- Concert production suit: In March 2026, 24/7 Productions sued Minaj and her company for more than $275,000 in hotel and travel costs from a 2023 promotional week tied to Pink Friday 2. Court filings showed Republic Records had set a $250,000 promo allowance. Minaj has asked to be dismissed from the case.
- Legal fees suit: In July 2026 the law firm Rees Scully Mansukhani sued her for about $229,500 in unpaid fees from a 2024 copyright case. A representative called the claim false.
None of these claims is large compared with her fortune, but together they show a period of little new income from music and rising legal costs.
Business ventures and endorsements
Minaj has turned her image into a wide range of brand deals and products:
- Myx Moscato: she became the face of the wine brand in 2013 and took a reported ownership stake
- Fragrances: a line of perfumes starting with Pink Friday (2012), followed by Minajesty and Onika
- MAC Cosmetics: a Viva Glam lipstick campaign in 2012, with proceeds going to HIV/AIDS programs
- Kmart: a Pink Friday clothing and accessories collection in 2013
- Pepsi, Adidas Originals and Beats by Dre: advertising campaigns in the early 2010s
- Call of Duty: a playable Nicki Minaj character for Activision in 2022
- Heavy On It: her own record imprint, launched in 2023
- Queen Radio: her talk and music show, which ran from 2018 to 2023 on Apple’s Beats 1 and later Amazon’s Amp
She has also sold press-on nails and a sneaker collection. Her equity in Tidal is another asset, though its current value is unclear after the service was sold to Square (now Block) in 2021.
Real estate
For years Minaj rented homes in the Los Angeles area. In late 2022 she bought her first major property there.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Contemporary farmhouse-style mansion, Hidden Hills, California | 2022 | About $19.5 million |
The gated home sits in one of the most exclusive celebrity enclaves in Los Angeles County, with neighbors that have included the Kardashian-Jenner family. It is now valued at about $20 million.
Personal life
Minaj married Kenneth Petty, whom she had known since her teens, on October 21, 2019. Their son was born on September 30, 2020.
Petty is a registered sex offender because of a 1995 conviction in New York. In 2021 he pleaded guilty to failing to register after moving to California, and in 2022 he was sentenced to home detention and probation. Lawsuits connected to Petty, including the Weidenmüller case, have led to judgments that Minaj has paid.
Her father, Robert Maraj, died in a hit-and-run accident in New York in February 2021. Minaj is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago and has lived in the U.S. as a permanent resident.
Philanthropy
Minaj’s giving has often been direct and personal:
- In 2017 she offered on social media to pay college tuition and student loans for fans who showed good grades, and followed through for many of them.
- The same year she funded a development project in a village in India, including water wells, a computer center and a sewing center.
- Her MAC Viva Glam campaign raised money for HIV/AIDS programs.
