Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time, with 28 medals, 23 of them gold. Swimmers earn very little prize money, so his fortune comes almost entirely from endorsements: Speedo, Omega, Visa, Subway, Under Armour, Louis Vuitton, Talkspace and many more.

Since he retired after the 2016 Rio Games, he has added income from his own swimwear line, NBC Olympics broadcasting, paid speaking and a long-running deal with Talkspace. He sits well below the soccer and Formula 1 stars on the list of the richest athletes in the world, but he is one of the best-paid Olympians ever in a sport with almost no salaries.

Bonuses and early endorsement deals

Olympic swimmers do not earn salaries, so bonuses and sponsor deals tell the story of Phelps’s income. The U.S. Olympic Committee paid American medalists $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze during his career.

Deal or bonus Year Reported value
Speedo contract (through 2009) with record bonus Signed after 2004 Trials $1 million bonus, paid after Beijing 2008

Early life

Michael Fred Phelps II was born on June 30, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in the Rodgers Forge area of Towson. His mother, Debbie, was a middle school principal. His father, Fred, was a Maryland State Trooper.

He was the youngest of three children. His parents divorced in 1994, and he has said the split affected him deeply.

He started swimming at seven, partly because his older sisters swam and partly to burn off energy. He was diagnosed with ADHD in sixth grade. At the North Baltimore Aquatic Club he met coach Bob Bowman, who would guide his whole career.

Teen star: Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004

Phelps made the U.S. team for the 2000 Sydney Olympics at age 15, the youngest American male Olympic swimmer in 68 years. He finished fifth in the 200-meter butterfly.

A year later he broke the 200 butterfly world record and became the youngest man ever to set a swimming world record. Speedo signed him as a teenager and later gave him what it called its richest swimwear deal ever.

At Athens 2004 he won eight medals: six gold and two bronze. He then followed Bowman to the University of Michigan, where he trained from 2004 to 2008.

Beijing 2008: the eight-gold summer

Beijing made Phelps a global star. He won eight gold medals, breaking Mark Spitz’s 1972 record of seven at a single Games. The seventh, which tied Spitz, came in the 100 butterfly, which he won by one hundredth of a second.

That run triggered Speedo’s $1 million bonus, which was tied to matching Spitz. Phelps used the money to start the Michael Phelps Foundation.

Sponsors lined up. Visa, Subway, Omega, Hilton, Procter & Gamble, AT&T, PowerBar and Kellogg all used him in campaigns. Much like Mary Lou Retton after 1984, he even landed on a cereal box: Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.

The boom had a hiccup. In February 2009 a tabloid published a photo of him with a marijuana pipe. Kellogg dropped him and USA Swimming suspended him for three months, but most of his other sponsors, including Subway, stayed.

London 2012, comeback and Rio 2016

At London 2012 Phelps won four golds and two silvers and passed Larisa Latynina as the most decorated Olympian in history. That same month Louis Vuitton released a Core Values ad shot by Annie Leibovitz that featured Phelps alongside Latynina. It was his first fashion campaign.

He retired after London, then returned to racing in 2014. That September he was arrested for drunk driving in Baltimore. USA Swimming suspended him, he missed the 2015 World Championships, and he entered a treatment program. He later said it was the low point that pushed him to seek help.

He came back stronger. At Rio 2016 he carried the U.S. flag at the opening ceremony and won five golds and a silver. Under Armour built a famous “Rule Yourself” ad around his training. He retired for good after Rio, at 31.

Endorsements and brand deals

Few Olympians have had a sponsor list as long as Phelps’s. At his peak he had about 11 partners at once, and reports have put his endorsement income at roughly $10 million a year.

  • Speedo: his swimwear sponsor from age 16 until the end of 2013, including the NASA-assisted LZR suit era.
  • Omega: a long-running watch ambassador. Omega, the Olympic timekeeper, recorded his 0.01-second win in Beijing.
  • Visa and Subway: both ran national ads around Beijing, and Subway stood by him in 2009.
  • Under Armour: signed in 2010 for training apparel and footwear. It became one of his signature partners through Rio.
  • Louis Vuitton: the 2012 Core Values campaign by Annie Leibovitz.
  • Talkspace: spokesman and adviser since 2018 (see below).
  • Others: Hilton, Procter & Gamble, Colgate, AT&T, PowerBar and, since 2023, the online social poker brand Global Poker.

In November 2026 Phelps signed with The Familie, a Los Angeles and Nashville talent management firm. It will handle his brand partnerships, investments, media and speaking. The same month he was announced for season 2 of IShowSpeed‘s YouTube series Speed Goes Pro, alongside Mike Tyson and Serena Williams.

MP and Phelps Brand swimwear

In August 2014 Phelps left Speedo for Aqua Sphere, a brand under the Aqua Lung group. Instead of a standard sponsorship, he and Bob Bowman helped design a competitive line carrying his name, launched as MP.

The line includes tech racing suits, training gear and goggles. In July 2020 it was renamed Phelps Brand with a new swimmer logo, and it has signed Olympians such as Chase Kalisz and Penny Oleksiak. Sales figures and Phelps’s share have never been made public.

Broadcasting: NBC Olympics

Phelps moved into TV with NBC. At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, he was a primetime correspondent and called select races with Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines.

For Paris 2024, NBC brought him back for its daytime and primetime shows on NBC and Peacock. He worked from the Paris La Défense Arena, the swimming venue.

NBC’s lineup for the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games did not include him, since it is not his sport. LA28 is the obvious next stop, but no deal has been announced. His fees for the NBC work have not been reported.

Mental health advocacy

Phelps has spoken openly about depression and anxiety. He has said that after the 2014 arrest he spent days in his room and did not want to be alive, and that therapy saved his life.

In May 2018 he became Talkspace‘s spokesman and joined its advisory board. He fronted its “Start from the Top” campaign in 2023. In 2020 he narrated and executive produced the HBO documentary The Weight of Gold about Olympians’ mental health.

In May 2026 the University of Michigan gave him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, partly for that work.

Real estate

Phelps has owned homes in his hometown of Baltimore and in the Phoenix area, where he trained for Rio. Not every deal made money.

Property Year Reported price
Fells Point townhouse, Baltimore (bought) 2007 $1.69 million
Fells Point townhouse, Baltimore (sold) 2012 $1.25 million
Canton house, Baltimore (bought) 2012 About $1.03 million
Canton house, Baltimore (listed) 2016 $1.15 million asking
Paradise Valley, Arizona (bought) 2016 $2.5 million
Paradise Valley, Arizona (sold) 2018 $3.5 million

The Fells Point townhouse was a 4,080-square-foot home he bought at the top of the market. He sold it in 2012 to a Constellation Energy executive for about $440,000 less than he paid.

He then lived in a house in nearby Canton, which was listed for sale in 2016 after he moved to Arizona. The final sale price was not widely reported.

The Paradise Valley house, near Scottsdale, has about 6,100 square feet, five bedrooms, four fireplaces and a pool facing Camelback Mountain. He listed it for $4.125 million in 2018 and sold it for $3.5 million, about $1 million more than he paid. The family has stayed in Arizona.

Personal life

Phelps married former Miss California USA Nicole Johnson in 2016. They have four sons:

  • Boomer, born May 5, 2016
  • Beckett, born February 12, 2018
  • Maverick, born September 9, 2019
  • Nico, born January 16, 2024

Boomer was in the stands in Rio as a baby, and the boys often appear on their parents’ social media. Phelps also stays close to Bowman, his coach of more than two decades.

Philanthropy

Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation in 2008 with his $1 million Speedo bonus. It aims to grow swimming and promote healthy, active lives, mainly for children.

Its main program, im, teaches water safety, healthy habits and goal setting through partners such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Special Olympics. By 2017 it had reached more than 16,000 people. That year it also partnered with the federal Pool Safely campaign.

In 2020 the foundation added mental wellness and emotional resilience programs for kids. Phelps has said that saving a life matters more to him than any gold medal.

How Michael Phelps compares

Phelps is rich by Olympic standards, but team-sport and motorsport stars with big salaries are far ahead of him. Like Mia Hamm, he built most of his wealth from endorsements and his own name. Soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, and F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, play in a different league.
