Early life
Sofía Margarita Vergara Vergara was born on July 10, 1972, in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her father, Julio Enrique Vergara Robayo, worked as a cattle rancher supplying the meat industry, and her mother, Margarita, was a homemaker. Her family nickname, “Toti,” later gave its name to her beauty brand.
She studied dentistry for three years at the National University of Colombia but left two semesters short of a degree to pursue modeling and TV work.
Her family went through serious tragedy. Her older brother Rafael was killed during an attempted kidnapping in Colombia in the 1990s. After his death she moved to Miami, where she would build her career.
Modeling and Spanish-language TV
A photographer spotted Vergara on a beach in Santa Marta, and at 17 she landed her first commercial, a Pepsi spot that aired across Latin America. In 1992 she won Colombia’s Look of the Year contest.
Univision then hired her, first as a model on variety shows and later as a host and celebrity correspondent on programs such as Fuera de Serie, Primer Impacto and El Gordo y La Flaca. She also acted in the Mexican telenovela Acapulco, cuerpo y alma (1995–96).
In 1994, while still in her early twenties, she co-founded Latin World Entertainment in Miami with music promoter Luis Balaguer. The company managed her career and would later become a major income source in its own right.
Hollywood breakthrough
Vergara moved into English-language work in the early 2000s. She had roles in Chasing Papi (2003), Four Brothers (2005), and Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns (2008) and Madea Goes to Jail (2009). She also starred in the short-lived ABC sitcom Hot Properties (2005).
In 2009 she spent six weeks on Broadway as Mama Morton in Chicago. These years built her profile, but the real money arrived with one sitcom.
Modern Family: the main engine of her fortune
Modern Family premiered on ABC in September 2009. Vergara played Gloria Delgado-Pritchett for all 11 seasons and 250 episodes, until the finale in April 2020. The show won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series five years in a row.
Her pay rose sharply over the run. The adult cast renegotiated as a group in 2012 and again later in the series. By the final seasons, Forbes reported that Vergara earned $500,000 per episode, which it called her biggest TV haul ever.
The role also earned her four straight Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (2010–2013) and four Golden Globe nominations. More important for her bank balance, it made her one of the most recognizable faces on American TV, which brands paid heavily to use.
Films during the Modern Family years
- The Smurfs (2011) and Happy Feet Two (2011, voice role)
- New Year’s Eve (2011)
- The Three Stooges (2012)
- Machete Kills and Fading Gigolo (2013)
- Chef (2014)
- Hot Pursuit (2015), co-starring Reese Witherspoon
- The Emoji Movie (2017), voice role
Her film salaries were never reported in detail, and they were small next to her TV and licensing income.
America’s Got Talent
Vergara joined NBC’s America’s Got Talent as a judge for season 15 in 2020, the same year Modern Family ended. Forbes reported that the job paid her at least $10 million per season. Her exact current pay has not been disclosed.
She has kept the seat ever since. In 2026 she returned for season 21 alongside Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel and Mel B. Two of her Golden Buzzer picks have gone on to win the show: Mayyas in 2022 and Jessica Sanchez in 2025.
For a performer in her fifties, a steady eight-figure TV salary for a few months of work each year is a major pillar of her wealth.
Griselda and her Netflix comeback
In January 2024, Netflix released Griselda, a six-episode limited series in which Vergara played Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. She also served as a producer, alongside her longtime partner Luis Balaguer.
The show was a hit. It debuted at No. 1 in 90 countries and drew 20.6 million views in its first period on Netflix’s global top 10.
It also brought her the best reviews of her career. Vergara earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series and a Golden Globe nomination. Her pay for the series was not disclosed.
The same year she voiced a character in Despicable Me 4 and appeared in Jennifer Lopez’s This Is Me… Now: A Love Story.
Latin World Entertainment
Latin World Entertainment (LatinWE) is the business behind much of Vergara’s wealth. She co-founded it in 1994 with CEO Luis Balaguer and Melissa Escobar. Today it is based in Beverly Hills with an office in Miami.
The firm handles talent management, production, licensing, endorsements and brand marketing aimed at Hispanic audiences. Forbes estimated its revenue at about $27 million in 2011, a figure Balaguer described as “impressively close.”
LatinWE also negotiated many of Vergara’s own licensing deals, so she profits both as the face of the products and as an owner of the company that sets them up. It has produced TV shows such as Killer Women (2014) and the animated film Koati (2021).
Endorsements and licensing deals
Vergara has been one of the most active celebrity endorsers on TV. Her deals have included:
- Pepsi and Diet Pepsi: from her first commercial at 17 to a 2011 spot with David Beckham
- CoverGirl (2011) and Head & Shoulders (2014)
- Comcast Xfinity, State Farm and Synthroid
- SharkNinja coffee makers
Her biggest money-makers have been licensing deals, which usually pay a fixed fee plus a share of sales:
- Kmart clothing and accessories line (2011–2015)
- Walmart lines of jeans, intimates, jewelry and home décor, which followed the Kmart deal
- Rooms To Go furniture collection (since 2013)
- Foster Grant eyewear (since 2020)
- Payless shoes and bags (2018)
- Five fragrances, starting with “Sofia by Sofia Vergara” in 2014
Toty and Dios Mío coffee
In 2023 Vergara launched Toty, a beauty brand named after her childhood nickname. It focuses on sun care, with mineral sunscreen, color-correcting cream and supplements, and was developed with Spain’s Cantabria Labs, maker of Heliocare.
Toty started on its own website and HSN. Vergara and the company have not shared sales, but industry sources told WWD they expected $5 million to $10 million in first-year net sales. The brand expanded to Europe in 2025.
In 2024 she also launched Dios Mío coffee, which sources beans from female growers in Colombia. Both brands are young, and their value to her net worth is not public.
Real estate
Vergara’s main home is a large estate in Beverly Park, one of the most exclusive gated communities in Beverly Hills.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Beverly Hills villa (seven bedrooms, about 11,000 sq ft), bought | About 2014 | About $10.6 million |
| Beverly Park estate (about 17,100 sq ft), bought with Joe Manganiello | 2020 | About $26 million |
| Beverly Hills villa, sold after two years on the market | 2024 | $13.7 million |
The older villa was first listed in 2022 for close to $20 million before price cuts. It finally sold for $13.7 million, about $3 million more than she paid. She kept the Beverly Park estate after her divorce and has since redecorated it.
Personal life
Vergara married her high school sweetheart, Joe Gonzalez, in 1990, when she was 18. Their son, Manolo, was born in 1991. The couple divorced in 1993. Manolo now works with his mother on some business projects.
She was engaged to businessman Nick Loeb from 2012 to 2014. A long legal dispute over frozen embryos followed; a 2016 suit in Louisiana was dismissed in 2017 for lack of jurisdiction.
In November 2015 she married actor Joe Manganiello in Palm Beach, Florida. They announced their separation in July 2023, and the divorce was finalized in early 2024. Neither side contested the couple’s prenuptial agreement, so each kept what they had earned individually and both waived spousal support. That left her fortune largely intact.
Since 2025 she has been linked to businessman Douglas Chabbott. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2000, at 28, and recovered after surgery and treatment. She became a U.S. citizen in 2014.
Recent and upcoming projects (2025–2026)
- America’s Got Talent: judge for season 20 (2025) and season 21 (2026)
- Koati: voice role in the animated series (2025), following the 2021 film she executive produced
- Thumb: dark comedy film; she joined the cast in November 2025, with release not yet dated
- Toty: expansion into Europe from 2025
Philanthropy
Vergara’s charity work is lower-profile than her business career. As a thyroid cancer survivor, she has spoken publicly about the disease and fronted a 2013 awareness campaign urging people to get their thyroid checked. Her Dios Mío coffee brand was set up to support women coffee growers in Colombia.
