Early life

Nicholas Caradoc Hoult was born on December 7, 1989, in Wokingham, Berkshire, and grew up in nearby Sindlesham. His mother, Glenis, is a piano teacher, and his father, Roger, was a commercial airline pilot. He has an older brother and two sisters.

Acting runs in the family. His great-aunt was Anna Neagle, one of Britain’s biggest film stars of the 1930s and 1940s.

As a child Hoult trained in ballet and danced with the English National Ballet in Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. He attended Ranelagh School in Bracknell and began A-levels at Farnborough Sixth Form College in 2006, but left after the first series of Skins to act full time.

Child actor and About a Boy

Hoult made his film debut at age six in Intimate Relations (1996). He also had small parts in British TV shows such as Casualty, The Bill and Silent Witness.

His breakthrough came at 12, playing Marcus opposite Hugh Grant in About a Boy (2002). The film earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay and made Hoult one of the best-known child actors in Britain. He won a Phoenix Film Critics Society award for his performance.

He followed it with Wah-Wah (2005) and his first Hollywood film, The Weather Man (2005), opposite Nicolas Cage.

Skins and the move to adult roles

In 2007 Hoult was cast as Tony Stonem in the E4 teen drama Skins. The show was a cult hit in the UK and abroad, and he played the lead for its first two series.

His first adult film role came in Tom Ford’s A Single Man (2009), opposite Colin Firth. The part earned him a BAFTA Rising Star nomination in 2010. He then appeared in the blockbuster remake Clash of the Titans (2010).

X-Men, Warm Bodies and Mad Max

In 2010 Hoult was cast as the young Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, in X-Men: First Class (2011). He went on to play the role in four more films:

  • X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), the highest-grossing film of the series at about $746 million
  • X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
  • Deadpool 2 (2018), an uncredited cameo
  • Dark Phoenix (2019)

Between X-Men films he took leading roles. He played a zombie named R in the hit romantic comedy Warm Bodies (2013) and the title role in Jack the Giant Slayer (2013).

In 2015 he played the War Boy Nux in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The film grossed about $380 million and won six Academy Awards. Many critics still rank it among the best action movies ever made.

Prestige roles and The Great

In the late 2010s Hoult moved into period dramas and biopics. He played J. D. Salinger in Rebel in the Rye (2017), Nikola Tesla in The Current War (2017) and the author J. R. R. Tolkien in Tolkien (2019).

His role as the scheming politician Robert Harley in Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite (2018) was part of an ensemble that won the Critics’ Choice award for best acting ensemble.

In 2020 he began starring as Emperor Peter III of Russia opposite Elle Fanning in Hulu’s The Great. He was also an executive producer, which usually adds producer fees to an actor’s pay. The show ran for three seasons and earned him:

  • An Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (2022)
  • Two Golden Globe nominations (2021 and 2022)

He also played a villain in Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021), an obsessive foodie in The Menu (2022) and the title role in Renfield (2023), opposite Nicolas Cage as Dracula.

2024: Nosferatu, Juror #2 and The Order

2024 was the busiest year of Hoult’s career. He appeared in four films:

  • The Garfield Movie: voice of Jon Arbuckle
  • The Order: played white supremacist Bob Mathews opposite Jude Law
  • Juror #2: the lead in Clint Eastwood’s courtroom drama, released in a small number of cinemas before streaming on Max
  • Nosferatu: the hero Thomas Hutter in Robert Eggers’ horror remake, which grossed about $182 million worldwide on a $50 million budget

The San Diego Film Critics Society gave him a special award for his body of work that year.

Superman and the DC Universe

Hoult had auditioned for Superman years earlier. In 2024 James Gunn cast him as the villain Lex Luthor instead, in the first film of the new DC Universe.

Superman opened in July 2025 and grossed about $619 million worldwide on a reported $225 million budget. Hoult’s performance was one of the most praised parts of the film, and he also appeared as Luthor in an episode of Peacemaker season 2.

His reported $2 million fee was the highest among the main cast. Because he is signed to return in the sequel, Man of Tomorrow (due July 2027), his pay for later DC films could rise.

2026 and upcoming projects

Hoult has a full slate of work that should keep his income growing:

  • How to Rob a Bank (November 13, 2026): a heist thriller from director David Leitch, co-starring Zoë Kravitz, Pete Davidson and John C. Reilly. Amazon MGM Studios releases it in the U.S.; it was moved from September 2026.
  • Cocomelon: The Movie (2027): a voice role in the animated film
  • Man of Tomorrow (July 2027): his return as Lex Luthor
  • Cry to Heaven: Tom Ford’s next film as director, reuniting them after A Single Man
  • Mosquito: a Hulu series from The Great creator Tony McNamara

In mid-2025 Hoult tore his ACL playing basketball and had surgery that October. It did not appear to slow his schedule.

Endorsements and business

Hoult has done a handful of brand campaigns. He was the face of Giorgio Armani’s Acqua for Life fragrance campaign in 2022 and 2023, and led Biotherm’s #BeAWaterLover campaign in 2022. The fees for these deals were not made public.

No UK company accounts linked to Hoult have been publicly reported. Many British actors are paid through personal service companies, but we found no published accounts that show his earnings, so they are not included here.

Away from acting, he is a keen racing driver. He graduated from Ferrari’s Corso Pilota driving school in 2022 and competes in Ferrari Challenge events. In 2024 he won a “Track Attack” race at Watkins Glen in a Ferrari 296 GTB.

Real estate

Hoult splits his time between London and Huntington Beach, California. His known property deals include:

Property Year Reported price
St John’s Wood, North West London house (with Jennifer Lawrence) 2014 Price not reported
Outpost Estates, Hollywood Hills home (bought) 2018 About $2.3 million
Same Hollywood Hills home (listed) 2025 Asking almost $2.9 million
Same Hollywood Hills home (sold) 2026 About $2.2 million

The Hollywood Hills house was built in 1962 and has three bedrooms in about 2,337 square feet. Hoult listed it in 2025 for almost $2.9 million, cut the price, and finally sold it in 2026 for about $2.2 million, slightly less than he paid. The price of his Huntington Beach home has not been reported.

Personal life

Hoult has been in a relationship with American model Bryana Holly since 2016. They have two children, born in 2018 and 2022. At the 2024 Governors Awards he referred to Holly as his “wife,” which many outlets took as a sign they had quietly married.

Earlier, he dated his X-Men co-star Jennifer Lawrence from about 2010 to 2013. Hoult is known for keeping his family life private.

Philanthropy

Hoult has supported children’s and health charities since he was a teenager:

  • NSPCC: its first Young Person Ambassador; inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2010
  • Teenage Cancer Trust: a supporter since 2009
  • Save the Children: named an ambassador in 2025 and designed jumpers for its Christmas Jumper Day

How Nicholas Hoult compares

Actor Estimated net worth Main source
Robert Downey Jr. About $300 million Marvel films and backend deals
Margot Robbie About $125 million Acting and LuckyChap Entertainment
Henry Cavill About $40 million Superman, The Witcher, Mission: Impossible
Nicholas Hoult About $10 million Film and TV acting

Margot Robbie’s figure is from the Financial Review’s 2025 Young Rich List; the others are widely reported estimates as of 2026. Hoult’s fortune is modest next to these stars because he has mostly been a supporting or ensemble actor in big franchises. Bigger lead roles could change that quickly. See more actor net worths.
