Early life

Valtteri Viktor Bottas was born on August 28, 1989, in Nastola, a small town in southern Finland that is now part of Lahti. His father, Rauno, ran a small cleaning company, and his mother, Marianne, worked as an undertaker.

The family was not wealthy by motorsport standards. Bottas started karting at six after spotting a karting event advertised at a local supermarket, and he finished eighth at the 2005 Karting World Cup.

He trained as an auto mechanic at a vocational school in Heinola and later did his military service at the Finnish Defence Forces Sports School in Lahti.

Junior career: a string of titles

Bottas moved into car racing in 2007 and won quickly. In 2008 he took both the Formula Renault Eurocup and the Formula Renault NEC title, beating Daniel Ricciardo to the Eurocup crown by three points.

He then won the Masters of Formula 3 in 2009 and again in 2010, the first driver to win it twice. In 2011 he took the GP3 Series title with ART Grand Prix by winning the last four race weekends.

Williams signed him as its official test driver in January 2010. He spent three years in that role, including 15 Friday practice outings in 2012, before getting a race seat.

Williams years (2013–2016)

Bottas made his Grand Prix debut in Australia in 2013. Williams had a weak car that year, and he scored four of the team’s five points.

The 2014 rule change turned things around. With Mercedes power, he finished fourth in the championship with 186 points and six podiums, starting with Austria. He added two podiums in 2015 and one in 2016.

Those four seasons made his name. When Nico Rosberg retired suddenly after winning the 2016 title, Mercedes picked Bottas as the replacement.

Mercedes years (2017–2021): the big paydays

Joining Mercedes put Bottas in the best car on the grid and alongside Lewis Hamilton, now the richest driver in F1. It was also when his earnings climbed into the top tier.

He won three races in his first season, in Russia, Austria and Abu Dhabi, and finished third. After a winless 2018, he won four races in 2019 and was runner-up to Hamilton. He was runner-up again in 2020 and won his last race for the team in Turkey in 2021.

Mercedes results

Season Position Points Wins
2017 3rd 305 3
2018 5th 247 0
2019 2nd 326 4
2020 2nd 223 2
2021 3rd 226 1

He helped Mercedes win five straight constructors’ titles. Mercedes signed him on a series of one-year deals, which kept his salary at about $10 million rather than the much larger sums paid to Hamilton. At the end of 2021 he was replaced by George Russell.

Alfa Romeo and Sauber (2022–2024)

Bottas moved to Alfa Romeo on a multi-year deal as team leader. The first season went well: he finished 10th with 49 points, and the team was sixth in the constructors’ standings.

Results then fell away. He scored 10 points in 2023, and in 2024, with the team now running as Stake/Kick Sauber, he scored no points at all. He later called the move a mistake.

His salary held up, though. RacingNews365 estimated his 2024 pay at about $10 million, five times that of teammate Zhou Guanyu. Sauber did not keep him for 2025.

Mercedes reserve and the Cadillac return (2025–2026)

Bottas went back to Mercedes as reserve driver for 2025. He turned down an IndyCar offer to stay close to F1, and he did a private test in a McLaren under a reserve-sharing arrangement.

In August 2025 Cadillac, the new American team, named Bottas and Pérez as its first race drivers. Bottas has said his contract runs through 2027; Formula1.com reported in late October 2026 that Cadillac had not yet triggered its option for the second year, while Pérez has been extended for the long term.

The 2026 season has been tough. After the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, Bottas had no points and a best finish of 13th in China, which is also Cadillac’s best result. He had retired eight times by the US Grand Prix. Meanwhile his former Mercedes team won the title with Kimi Antonelli, who became the youngest world champion in F1 history.

Cadillac’s sale talks and the team’s interest in test driver Colton Herta add uncertainty. Even so, reports say Bottas is still the favorite to keep his seat for 2027, helped by his feedback on the car and his role in building the new team.

Business ventures and sponsors

Bottas has used his F1 income to build a set of small, personal brands. Most have links to Finland or to Australia, where his partner is from.

  • Oath gin: launched with Tiffany Cromwell. It is distilled in Finland using oats from his uncle’s farm. Two batches of about 16,000 bottles each had been made by late 2023.
  • Ihana wine: a Shiraz made with Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards in McLaren Vale. The first 2022 vintage ran to 5,000 bottles and sold for about $195 a two-pack in the U.S. He also co-hosts a wine podcast with winemaker Corrina Wright.
  • Kahiwa Coffee Roasters: he owns about 20% of this Lahti roastery, which ships worldwide.
  • Lahti Pelicans: he bought a 10% stake in the Finnish Liiga ice hockey club in March 2021.
  • FNLD GRVL: a gravel cycling event in Lahti that he co-founded with Cromwell and Amy Charity.
  • Azurite: in 2019 he became a major shareholder and brand ambassador of this Monaco property investment firm.

PlanetF1 notes that his profile in Australia has brought him several Australian sponsors, and that he has a long-running deal with Canyon Bicycles. He also has a podcast with its own merchandise, helped by a cult following built on his mullet and dry humor.

Real estate

Bottas splits his time between three bases. Purchase prices have not been made public.

Property Year Reported price
The Vineyard McLaren Vale, South Australia (six hectares, main house plus six guest houses) 2025 Not disclosed
Home in Monaco — Not disclosed
Lake house in Finland — Not disclosed

The McLaren Vale retreat, bought with Cromwell, stays open to paying guests, so it also earns income.

Car collection

Like many drivers, Bottas collects cars. ESPN reported in 2023 that his garage included a Mercedes-AMG One hypercar, a Ferrari F8 Tributo and an Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, and that he had ordered an Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale.

Personal life

Bottas married Finnish Olympic swimmer Emilia Pikkarainen in Helsinki in September 2016. The couple announced their divorce in November 2019.

Since early 2020 he has been in a relationship with Australian road and gravel cyclist Tiffany Cromwell. They run several businesses together and divide their time between Europe and South Australia.

Bottas is a keen endurance athlete. He races gravel bikes, finishing 134th of 233 at the 2024 UCI Gravel World Championships, and has competed in rallies, including a sixth place at the 2021 Arctic Lapland Rally.

Philanthropy

  • He has run the Valtteri Bottas Duathlon, a charity event in Finland, every year since 2017.
  • His tongue-in-cheek BOTTASS 2024 calendar raised about $150,000 for Movember, the men’s health charity.
  • A 2022 photo of him taken by Cromwell, sold as prints, raised more than €50,000 for charity.
