Early life
Morgan Cole Wallen was born on May 13, 1993, in Sneedville, a small town in East Tennessee. His father, Tommy, was a local church pastor, and his mother, Lesli, was a teacher.
The family moved to the Knoxville area when he was a teenager. He grew up playing piano and violin, but his first love was baseball. He was a pitcher and shortstop at Gibbs High School.
An elbow injury (a torn ulnar collateral ligament) in his senior year ended his college baseball hopes. He went to work in landscaping while he started singing more seriously.
The Voice and early career
Wallen auditioned for season 6 of NBC’s The Voice in 2014, singing Howie Day’s “Collide.” He joined Usher’s team, was later moved to Adam Levine’s team, and was eliminated in the playoffs.
He moved to Nashville and signed with Panacea Records, which released his Stand Alone EP in August 2015. The same year he signed with Big Loud Records, the label that still releases his music.
His debut album, If I Know Me (2018), was a slow burn. Hits like “Up Down,” “Whiskey Glasses” and “Chasin’ You” kept it on the charts for years, and it returned to No. 1 on Top Country Albums in 2020 after a record 114 weeks.
Dangerous and the 2021 controversy
His second album, Dangerous: The Double Album, came out in January 2021. It was the first country album to spend its first seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and finished as Billboard’s top album of 2021.
In early February 2021, TMZ published a video of Wallen using a racial slur outside his Nashville home. He apologized. Big Loud and Republic suspended his contract, many radio stations dropped his songs, and the ACM Awards ruled him ineligible that year.
His sales rose sharply in the weeks after the video, and Dangerous kept its No. 1 spot. He later donated $300,000 to the Black Music Action Coalition. The Dangerous Tour sold out in 2022, and in 2023 the ACM named Dangerous its Album of the Year for 2022.
One Thing at a Time and stadium tours
His third album, One Thing at a Time (March 2023), had 36 songs and was built for the streaming era. It debuted with 501,000 units and about 498 million on-demand streams in its first week, the fifth-biggest streaming week for any album at the time.
- All 36 songs charted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the same week, a record.
- “Last Night” spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and was Billboard’s top song of 2023.
- The album spent 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, breaking the country record held by Garth Brooks’ Ropin’ the Wind (18 weeks).
- It finished as the No. 1 album of 2023.
The One Night at a Time World Tour moved him into stadiums. Billboard Boxscore reported $230 million from 44 shows and 1.3 million fans in 2023, the highest country gross ever recorded in a single year. By its last show in Charlotte in October 2024, the tour had played to about 3.1 million fans over 87 shows, and its total was reported at more than $300 million.
The previous country record belonged to Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, whose 2014–2017 world tour grossed about $364 million over 390 shows. Wallen got to a similar level in a fraction of the dates.
I’m the Problem and the 2025–2026 tours
I’m the Problem arrived on May 16, 2025. It debuted at No. 1 with 493,000 units, the biggest week of the year at that point, and placed 37 songs on the Hot 100 at once.
Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon each said it had the biggest first day for a country album in 2025. It became the most-played album of the year on Apple Music worldwide and the top album on Spotify in the U.S. It spent 12 weeks at No. 1 in 2025, more than any other album that year, and returned to No. 1 for a 14th week in August 2026.
The I’m the Problem Tour ran from June to September 2025, with 20 stadium shows in 10 cities in the U.S. and Canada. It set attendance records at venues such as Cleveland’s Huntington Bank Field and Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium. No full Boxscore total has been published for the 2025 run, but Forbes estimated Wallen earned about $24 million from it.
The Still the Problem Tour followed from April to August 2026. All 23 stadium shows in 12 cities sold out, including two nights each at Michigan Stadium and Clemson’s Memorial Stadium. Industry outlet Hits Daily Double estimated a gross of about $500 million. If that holds, it would be the first country tour to cross half a billion dollars and one of the top-grossing tours of 2026 in any genre. Final official totals had not been published as of November 2026.
Business ventures
This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen
Wallen’s biggest business outside music is Morgan Wallen’s This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen in downtown Nashville. It opened on June 1, 2024, at 107 Fourth Avenue North, next to the Ryman Auditorium.
The venue has six floors and about 30,000 square feet, with three live music stages, six bars and a rooftop. It is run with TC Restaurant Group, a large operator on Lower Broadway, which reportedly paid $10.2 million for the building in 2022. The menu includes some of his mother’s recipes, and a gift shop sells Wallen merchandise.
The name comes from his song “This Bar.” Wallen joined a crowded field of celebrity bars on Broadway, but his draw makes it one of the street’s busiest stops.
Other ventures
- Ryl Company: a flavored iced tea brand he co-founded with Blodin Ukella in 2022.
- Sand in My Boots festival: his own beach festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. It launched in 2025 and returns May 21–23, 2027, with Wallen, Kings of Leon and Ella Langley as headliners.
- Merchandise: a large online store, including “Get Me to God’s Country” shirts and hats sold after his 2025 SNL exit.
Real estate
Wallen keeps his property life private. Only one purchase and sale has clear public records.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Nashville home (Melrose / 12 South area), bought | 2020 | $700,000 |
| Same Nashville home, sold | 2021 | $835,000 |
| Farm outside Nashville | 2023 (reported) | Not disclosed |
| Tennessee lake house | Not confirmed | Not disclosed |
The Nashville home was a four-bedroom duplex. It was where the 2021 video was filmed, and he sold it in July 2021 for a gain of about $135,000.
Taste of Country reports that he bought an expansive farm outside Nashville in 2023, where he hunts and fishes instead of farming. He has told Billboard he uses rural land to “hide” from fame. Wallen is often linked to a Tennessee lake home, and lakes show up in his songs. However, no purchase price, acreage or deed for either the farm or a lake house has been confirmed in reliable reporting. Higher numbers on fan sites are unverified.
Personal life
Wallen was engaged to Katie “KT” Smith. The couple split in 2019, before their son, Indigo Wilder Wallen, was born on July 10, 2020, in Nashville. They co-parent, and Wallen has said his son is his main focus away from music.
In April 2024, Wallen was arrested after he threw a chair from the roof of Chief’s, Eric Church’s six-story bar in Nashville. The chair landed near police officers. In December 2024 he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment. He received judicial diversion, with seven days at a DUI education center and two years of probation.
In March 2025, he drew attention again when he walked off the Saturday Night Live stage early during the goodbyes and posted “Get me to God’s country.” People close to him told Variety there was no tension with the show.
Philanthropy
The Morgan Wallen Foundation supports youth music and sports programs and helps communities after disasters. A portion of every ticket on his recent tours goes to it.

- More than $1 million in instruments for 26 schools on the 2026 tour
