Early life

Anand Gopal Mahindra was born on May 1, 1955, in Bombay. His father, Harish Mahindra, was an industrialist, and his mother is Indira Mahindra. His grandfather, Jagdish Chandra (J.C.) Mahindra, co-founded the company in 1945 with his brother K.C. Mahindra and Malik Ghulam Muhammad.

The business started in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed, a steel trading firm. It was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948 and became famous for assembling Willys jeeps in India.

Anand went to the Lawrence School in Lovedale, in the hills of Tamil Nadu. He then studied film and architecture at Harvard, graduating magna cum laude in 1977. He returned to Harvard for an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1981.

Career: from steel to the top job (1981–2012)

Mahindra joined the group in 1981 as an executive assistant to the finance director of Mahindra Ugine Steel Company (MUSCO). In 1989 he became president and deputy managing director of MUSCO. He pushed the steel unit into new areas, including real estate and hospitality.

Those moves led to two businesses that still matter today: Mahindra Lifespaces and Club Mahindra, the holiday-resort brand launched in the 1990s.

His rise at the flagship was steady:

  • 1991: deputy managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra
  • 1997: managing director
  • 2001: vice chairman
  • 2012: chairman and managing director, succeeding his uncle Keshub Mahindra
  • 2016: re-designated executive chairman

In the 1990s M&M faced cheaper foreign rivals after India opened its economy. Mahindra backed an in-house SUV project that produced the Scorpio in 2002. It became a hit and set up the company’s SUV-first strategy.

Building a conglomerate

As vice chairman and then chairman, Mahindra turned the group into a global player through deals. Key moves included:

  • Satyam Computer Services (2009): bought after an accounting scandal and later merged into Tech Mahindra
  • Reva Electric Car Company (2010): an early bet on electric cars
  • SsangYong Motor (2011): a Korean SUV maker the group later exited
  • Peugeot Motocycles, Finland’s Holiday Club Resorts and Italian design house Pininfarina

Not every deal worked. SsangYong lost money for years, and M&M stopped funding it in 2020. But the group’s core in India, SUVs, tractors and rural finance, kept getting stronger.

Stepping back: non-executive chairman

In December 2019, Mahindra announced a planned handover. He became non-executive chairman of M&M on April 1, 2020, giving up day-to-day management.

Pawan Goenka ran the company as managing director and CEO for a year. In April 2021, Anish Shah took over as managing director and group CEO, completing the transition. Mahindra stayed on as chairman of the group, M&M and Tech Mahindra.

The handover has gone well for shareholders. Under Shah, M&M became India’s largest SUV maker by revenue, with a 25.3% revenue share in fiscal 2026. Its rising share price is the main reason Mahindra’s net worth grew from about $2 billion in 2022 to more than $3 billion today.

Electric SUVs: BE 6 and XEV 9e

In November 2024, M&M unveiled two electric SUVs built on its new INGLO platform: the BE 6 and the XEV 9e. The BE 6 starts at ₹18.90 lakh ex-showroom.

The car was first called the BE 6e. IndiGo airline objected because “6E” is its airline code, and Mahindra renamed it the BE 6 in December 2024. A Formula E edition followed in November 2025. M&M is targeting 18–20% of its SUV sales from EVs by fiscal 2027.

Salary and commission

As non-executive chairman, Mahindra earns a fixed remuneration plus a commission tied to M&M’s profits. His pay is modest next to his wealth, and far below that of his CEO.

Fiscal year Total pay from M&M Notes
FY2024 About ₹5.15 crore Commission and sitting fees
FY2025 About ₹5.6 crore (reported) Commission and sitting fees
FY2026 ₹6.05 crore ₹3.025 crore remuneration plus ₹3.025 crore commission, excluding sitting fees
April 2026 to July 2027 ₹6.655 crore (proposed) Subject to shareholder approval

For context, M&M’s annual report shows his pay was about 50 times the median employee’s in fiscal 2026. CEO Anish Shah’s ratio was more than 500 times, and Shah received about ₹47 crore in fiscal 2025, mostly from stock options.

That presence works as free marketing for the group. Mahindra has said he uses the platform to listen to customers and to find ideas.

Real estate

Mahindra lives in Gulistan, a three-storey heritage bungalow on Nepean Sea Road in South Mumbai, overlooking the Arabian Sea. Members of the family lived there as tenants for decades before the property changed hands.

Property Year Reported price

The bungalow’s ownership passed through the group’s real estate arm, Mahindra Lifespaces, which recorded an arm’s-length sale price of about ₹177 crore. Forbes also reports that his family office owns U.S. property, including a hotel in New York and land in Miami.

Personal life

Mahindra is married to Anuradha Mahindra, a journalist who launched Verve magazine and also edited Man’s World. They have two daughters, Divya and Aalika.

He turned 70 in May 2025. He has served on the boards of the Reserve Bank of India and the UN Global Compact, and he was president of the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2003.

  • Project Nanhi Kali: founded by Anand Mahindra in 1996 and run by the trust with the Naandi Foundation. It supports schooling for girls from poor families and says it has helped nearly a million girls.

  • Harvard: in 2010 he gave $10 million to Harvard’s humanities center, now the Mahindra Humanities Center.

He also chairs the Naandi Foundation’s board and sits on the founders board of The Rise Fund, a $2 billion impact investment fund.
