Scale AI valuation and Wang’s stake
Wang’s fortune has tracked Scale’s private valuation. Forbes has estimated his ownership at about 15% in 2022 and about 14% in 2024.
| Funding event | Date | Amount | Scale AI valuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Y Combinator | 2016 | Seed funding | Startup |

Meta’s stake is non-voting, and the deal left Scale as an independent company. Forbes put Wang’s net worth at $3.6 billion around the time of the deal. Its estimate has since eased to about $3.2 billion, the figure it used on the 2026 Forbes 400 and in October 2026.
Early life
Alexandr Wang was born in January 1997 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. His parents are Chinese immigrants who worked as physicists at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the government research center.
He was a math and coding prodigy. He competed in national math and computing contests, was a USA Computing Olympiad finalist in 2012 and 2013, and qualified for elite U.S. math and physics training programs. He attended Los Alamos High School.
Wang finished high school early and moved to Silicon Valley as a teenager. He worked as a software engineer at the wealth-tech company Addepar, as a programmer at the Q&A site Quora, and as an intern at the trading firm Hudson River Trading.
He then enrolled at MIT to study mathematics and computer science, focusing on machine learning. He left after his freshman year in 2016 to start a company and never returned.
Founding Scale AI
Wang co-founded Scale AI in 2016 with Lucy Guo, whom he had met at Quora. The company went through the startup accelerator Y Combinator that summer. Guo left Scale in 2018, while Wang stayed on as CEO.
Scale’s business is simple to explain but hard to do well: it supplies the labeled data that AI systems learn from. Early customers were self-driving car companies that needed millions of images of roads, cars and pedestrians tagged by hand.
Scale built a large network of contract workers around the world to label data, plus software to check and manage their work. By 2019 the company was valued at more than $1 billion.
The generative AI boom
When large language models took off, Scale moved with the market. It began supplying training data, human feedback and model testing for leading AI labs, which pushed its valuation from $7.3 billion in 2021 to $13.8 billion in May 2024.
Forbes reported in 2022 that Scale’s annual revenue was about $100 million. Revenue grew quickly as AI labs spent heavily on training data.
Wang’s personal fortune followed. Forbes first counted him as a billionaire in 2022 with about $1 billion. He dropped off the list as private tech valuations fell, then returned in 2024 with about $2 billion.
Government and defense work
Scale also became a major AI supplier to the U.S. government. It won defense contracts with the Army and Air Force, and the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office chose it to help test large language models.
In July 2023 Wang testified before a House Armed Services subcommittee on how the military should adopt AI. In February 2025 he met with several world leaders, including the prime ministers of the U.K. and India and the president of France, to discuss AI policy.
The Meta deal and Superintelligence Labs
In April 2025 Meta’s Llama 4 model drew a lukewarm response. According to Fortune, Mark Zuckerberg then reached out to Wang, and their first call ran about 44 minutes. Days later Wang sent him a memo on what he would do in Zuckerberg’s place.
In June 2025 Meta announced its $14.3 billion investment for 49% of Scale AI. The Information reported that Zuckerberg first offered about $5 billion and Wang pushed for much more. Wang stepped down as Scale’s CEO but kept his board seat, and chief strategy officer Jason Droege became interim CEO.
On June 30, 2025, Meta formed Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) with Wang as Chief AI Officer. Former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman joined to lead AI products. MSL brought Meta’s research group FAIR and its product teams under one roof.
Restructuring and hiring
Wang led an aggressive recruiting push for a small, elite research group called TBD Lab. Meta reportedly offered some researchers from rival labs pay packages worth tens of millions of dollars or more.
MSL was reorganized into four groups in August 2025. In October 2025, The New York Times reported that Meta would cut about 600 jobs in the AI unit. Longtime chief AI scientist Yann LeCun left Meta in November 2025 to start his own company.
Muse models and apps
The lab’s first results arrived in 2026:
- April 8, 2026: Meta released Muse Spark, MSL’s first model, which now powers the Meta AI assistant.
- September 8, 2026: the Muse personal AI agent app launched in the U.S. and reached No. 1 among free apps on Apple’s App Store. CNN, citing Sensor Tower, reported more than 2.5 million downloads in about two weeks.
- October 2026: Meta released Muse Wonder, which it called the lab’s first frontier-class model.
The stakes are huge. Meta expects to spend $130 billion to $145 billion on capital projects in 2026, much of it on AI, nearly double the $72.2 billion it spent in 2025.
What happened to Scale AI after the deal
After Meta took its stake, several Scale customers that compete with Meta were reported to have scaled back their work with the company. In July 2025 Scale cut about 14% of its staff, around 200 employees, as it refocused on government and enterprise customers.
Forbes still lists Scale AI as the source of Wang’s fortune, and he remains on the company’s board. That means Scale’s next funding round, sale or public listing could move his net worth sharply in either direction.
Compensation at Meta
Meta has not disclosed Wang’s salary or stock awards. He was not among the five named executive officers whose 2025 pay appeared in Meta’s 2026 proxy statement, so any figures circulating online are unconfirmed. For context, those five executives, led by Mark Zuckerberg, each received about $20 million to $25 million in total 2025 compensation. For that reason, this article does not assign him a salary.

Personal life
Wang keeps his private life out of the public eye and is not publicly married. During the COVID-19 pandemic he shared a home with Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI.
He is active on social media and often writes about AI policy and U.S. competition with China. He has also drawn attention for a 2024 hiring policy at Scale that he called “merit, excellence and intelligence,” which was praised by some business leaders, including Elon Musk, and criticized by others. He attended the January 2025 presidential inauguration.
Forbes noted that Wang held the title of youngest self-made billionaire until October 2025, when Polymarket founder Shayne Coplan took that spot.
Philanthropy
Wang has not set up a major public foundation, and his charitable giving is not well documented.
