Early life
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell was born on December 18, 2001, in Los Angeles. Her parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, are both actors and musicians. They later worked on her tours.
She grew up in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles and was homeschooled along with her older brother, Finneas. Her mother taught her the basics of songwriting.
Eilish began playing the ukulele at six, joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus at eight and wrote her first real song at 11. She also trained as a dancer until a growth-plate injury ended that path in 2016.
Breakthrough with “Ocean Eyes”
In late 2015, Finneas gave his sister a song he had written for his own band. Eilish recorded “Ocean Eyes” and posted it on SoundCloud on November 18, 2015. It quickly spread online.
In January 2016, the Apple-backed company Platoon signed her for artist development. By August 2016 she had signed with Darkroom and Interscope Records, at age 14.
Her debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me (2017), reached No. 14 on the Billboard 200. Songs like “Bellyache” and “Idontwannabeyouanymore” built a huge young fan base before she had released a full album.
When We All Fall Asleep and the 2020 Grammy sweep
Her first album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (March 2019), debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. and U.K. with about 313,000 first-week units in the U.S. The single “Bad Guy” topped the Billboard Hot 100.
At the 2020 Grammys, she won Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. At 18, she became the youngest artist to win all four major categories in one night.
The same year she recorded “No Time to Die”, the theme for the James Bond film of the same name. It won her first Oscar in 2022 and made her the youngest artist to record a Bond theme.
Early tour grosses
| Tour | Years | Gross |
|---|---|---|
| When We All Fall Asleep Tour | 2019 | About $18 million |
| Where Do We Go? World Tour | 2020 | Cut short by the pandemic |
| Happier Than Ever, The World Tour | 2022–2023 | About $131.8 million (88 shows, 1.15 million tickets) |
| Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour | 2024–2025 | About $226.2 million (88 of 106 shows reported) |
Happier Than Ever, the Apple deal and Barbie
Her second album, Happier Than Ever (July 2021), also debuted at No. 1, with about 238,000 first-week units. A Disney+ concert film, Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, followed in September 2021.
Earlier that year, Apple TV+ released Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, a documentary about the making of her first album. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Apple paid about $25 million for it, one of the biggest music documentary deals of its time. Forbes also cites the $25 million figure.
The Happier Than Ever tour ran from February 2022 to April 2023 and grossed about $131.8 million. It included two headline sets at Coachella and a Glastonbury headline slot in 2022.
In 2023 she wrote “What Was I Made For?” with Finneas for the film Barbie. It won the 2024 Oscar for Best Original Song, making her the youngest two-time Oscar winner in any category. It also won two Grammys. She also made her acting debut in the Amazon series Swarm in 2023.
Hit Me Hard and Soft: her biggest era yet
Her third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, came out on May 17, 2024. It opened at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with about 339,000 units, her best first week so far.
The single “Birds of a Feather” became her biggest streaming hit. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, was Spotify’s most-streamed song of 2024 and the platform’s second most-streamed song of 2025.
Another track, “Wildflower”, won Song of the Year at the 2026 Grammys on February 1, 2026. That made Eilish and Finneas the first three-time winners in the category, and it brought her total to 10 Grammys.
Hit Me Hard and Soft tour earnings
The tour opened in Quebec City on September 29, 2024, and ended at San Francisco’s Chase Center on November 23, 2025, after 106 shows. Promoted by Live Nation, it played arenas across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
- Gross: about $226.2 million from 88 reported shows, with about 1.5 million tickets sold
- Biggest stand: six nights at London’s O2 Arena in July 2025, grossing about $19.8 million
- Records: new single-show attendance records at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena and Prague’s O2 Arena
- Ranking: the highest-grossing tour ever by an artist born this century, ahead of Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour
- Awards: Pollstar’s Pop Tour of the Year and the American Music Awards’ Favorite Touring Artist for 2025
Because 18 shows were not reported, the true total is likely higher. Forbes estimated the roughly 70 shows in its 2025 tracking period alone grossed about $190 million.
The James Cameron concert film
Eilish co-directed a 3D concert film of the tour with James Cameron, the director of Titanic and Avatar. Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) was released by Paramount on May 8, 2026, after moving from an earlier March date.
The film had a reported budget of about $20 million and grossed about $26.7 million worldwide by August 2026. It began streaming on Paramount+ on August 6, 2026. Her personal share of the profits has not been disclosed.
Business ventures and brand deals
Eilish has kept her brand list short and close to her own image. Her most important business is her perfume.
Eilish fragrance
She launched her first perfume, Eilish, in November 2021. It is vegan and cruelty-free and is sold in a gold, body-shaped bottle. WWD reported that the scent was expected to bring in about $60 million in retail sales in its first year. She has since added follow-up scents such as Eilish No. 2 and No. 3.
Retail sales are not the same as her profit. Celebrity fragrance deals usually pay the star a licensing fee or a share of revenue, and the terms of her deal have not been made public.
Endorsements and collaborations
- Calvin Klein: starred in the #MyCalvins campaign in 2019
- Apple: appeared in Apple Music promotions and wrote music for a holiday ad
- Gucci: sold a limited-edition recycled vinyl in Gucci stores in 2021
- Converse: custom sneaker collaborations, including a 2024 release
- Other partners: Fender ukuleles, Takashi Murakami apparel and an MCM campaign
- Blōhsh: her own clothing and merchandise brand, launched in 2018
None of these deals has a publicly confirmed fee. Her tour merchandise, with hoodies priced around $100, is also a steady earner.
Awards and records
- 10 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year (2020), Record of the Year (2020, 2021) and Song of the Year (2020, 2024, 2026)
- 2 Academy Awards for “No Time to Die” (2022) and “What Was I Made For?” (2024)
- 2 Golden Globes, 4 Brit Awards and 9 American Music Awards
- Billboard Woman of the Year in 2019, at 17
- Apple Music Artist of the Year in 2019 and 2024
- The youngest artist ever to pass 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify
Real estate
Eilish keeps a low profile on property. Only one purchase has been widely reported:
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Glendale, California horse ranch (formerly owned by Leona Lewis) | About 2019, at age 17 | About $2.3 million |
The single-story ranch house has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, plus a guesthouse, a pool and horse facilities with four stables, a paddock and a riding arena. It is unclear whether she owns other homes. Her brother Finneas owns his own properties in Los Angeles.
Personal life
Eilish lives in the Los Angeles area. She has spoken openly about living with Tourette syndrome and depression, and she follows a vegan diet.
She dated musician Jesse Rutherford from 2022 to 2023. In early 2026 she appeared publicly with actor Nat Wolff at the Grammys.
Her outspoken views have also made headlines. At a Wall Street Journal Magazine event in October 2025, she told billionaires in the audience to “give your money away,” and in 2026 she used her Grammy speech to criticize U.S. immigration enforcement.
Philanthropy
Eilish’s biggest single gift came from her latest tour. In November 2025 she revealed that she had donated $11.5 million from the Hit Me Hard and Soft tour to groups working on food insecurity and the climate crisis.
- Partnered with the nonprofit REVERB on eco-villages at shows and a project to cut the music industry’s carbon footprint
- Pushed venues to offer plant-based food on tour
- Gave proceeds from a 2020 livestream to touring crew hit by the pandemic
- Supports causes including climate action, reproductive rights and animal welfare
