Early life

Charles Marc Hervé Perceval Leclerc was born on October 16, 1997, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. His father, Hervé Leclerc, raced in Formula 3 in the 1980s. His mother, Pascale, ran a hair salon in Monaco’s Fontvieille district.

He has an older half-brother, Lorenzo, and a younger brother, Arthur Leclerc, who also became a racing driver. His godfather was Jules Bianchi, the French F1 driver, whose family ran the kart track where Charles first drove.

Charles started karting as a small child and won regional titles in France from 2005. He went on to win the KF3 World Cup in 2011. Around that time, Nicolas Todt, son of former Ferrari boss Jean Todt, became his manager, a key step for a family without a big racing budget.

Junior racing and the road to F1

Leclerc moved to single-seaters in 2014 and finished second in Formula Renault 2.0 Alps as a rookie. In 2016 he joined the Ferrari Driver Academy and won the GP3 Series title with ART. He dedicated it to Bianchi, who had died in 2015 after a crash at the Japanese Grand Prix.

A year later he won the Formula 2 championship with Prema in his first attempt, then the youngest champion of that series. The season was also his hardest personally: his father died in June 2017, four days before Charles won the F2 feature race in Baku.

Sauber and the jump to Ferrari (2018–2019)

Ferrari placed Leclerc at Sauber for his debut season in 2018. He scored 39 points in a midfield car, finished 13th, and was named FIA Rookie of the Year. That was enough for Ferrari to promote him to a race seat at age 21.

His first Ferrari season, alongside Sebastian Vettel, was a breakout. He took his first pole in Bahrain, then won the Belgian and Italian Grands Prix back to back. He became the first driver from Monaco to win a Grand Prix and the first Ferrari driver to win at Monza since 2010.

He finished fourth in 2019, ahead of Vettel, and won the FIA Pole Trophy. Ferrari answered in December 2019 with a five-year contract extension, making him the long-term leader of the team.

Lean years and the 2022 title fight

Ferrari’s car was uncompetitive in 2020, and Leclerc slipped to eighth. In 2021 he was joined by Carlos Sainz and finished seventh as the team rebuilt.

The 2022 rules reset changed everything. Leclerc won two of the first three races, in Bahrain and Australia, and later added the Austrian Grand Prix. Reliability problems and strategy errors cost him, and Max Verstappen pulled away to take the title.

Leclerc still finished second in the championship with 308 points, the best result of his career so far. He followed it with a winless fifth place in 2023.

Monaco win and Hamilton’s arrival (2024–2025)

In January 2024, Ferrari confirmed a new multi-year deal with Leclerc. Days later the team announced that seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton would join in 2025, replacing Sainz.

The 2024 season brought his most emotional win. He won the Monaco Grand Prix in May, the first local driver to do so since 1931. He added victories at Monza and in Austin and finished third in the standings.

2025 was harder for Ferrari. Leclerc did not win a race but still finished fifth with 242 points, well ahead of Hamilton in his first season with the team.

Charles Leclerc in 2026

New engine and chassis rules arrived in 2026, and Mercedes adapted best. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli clinched the world title at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1.

Ferrari still gave Leclerc plenty of podium chances. Highlights of his season so far:

  • Podiums in Australia and Japan in the first three races
  • Victory at the British Grand Prix on July 5, 2026, his first win at Silverstone and first anywhere since Austin 2024
  • Second places in Belgium, Singapore and the United States
  • Fifth in the standings with 245 points after Mexico, 14 behind teammate Hamilton

Before his home race in June, Ferrari announced a new multi-year contract. The team did not give its length or value. Some outlets reported that it runs into the next decade and pays about €50 million a year, up from about €34 million, but Ferrari has not confirmed those numbers.

Business ventures and endorsements

LEC ice cream

In 2024 Leclerc launched LEC, a lower-calorie ice cream sold in supermarket tubs. He developed it with Guido Martinetti and Federico Grom, founders of the Grom gelato chain, and with his manager Nicolas Todt.

The brand started in Italy and France and later expanded to the UK. Italian business press reported about €3 million in revenue and 500,000 tubs sold in 2024, with a goal of selling a million units. His exact ownership stake has not been made public.

Sponsors and brand deals

Leclerc is one of the most marketable drivers in F1, helped by Ferrari’s global fan base. His personal partners have included:

  • Puma: global ambassador since October 2024, featured in Ferrari collection campaigns
  • Richard Mille: long-time watch partner
  • Giorgio Armani: face of the “Made to Measure” campaign in 2020
  • Peroni 0.0%: reported as the beer brand’s first global ambassador in 2024
  • Riva: the Italian yacht maker

In October 2023 he also signed with talent agency WME to handle entertainment and commercial work in the United States, while Todt stayed on as his manager.

Music

Leclerc is a keen pianist. He released his own piano piece, AUS23, in 2023. In 2024 he recorded the EP Dreamers with French pianist Sofiane Pamart, which reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Classical Albums chart.

Real estate and major assets

Like most drivers on the grid, Leclerc lives in Monaco, where there is no personal income tax. He has kept the details of his home private, especially after fans gathered outside his apartment in 2023 when the address leaked online.

Property or asset Year Reported price
Apartment in Monaco Not disclosed Not disclosed
Riva 102′ Corsaro Super yacht 2026 About €11 million to £15 million (reported)
Ferrari road cars Various Not disclosed

The yacht is his biggest known purchase. It was launched at Riva’s shipyard in La Spezia, Italy, in spring 2026, and his wife christened it. He also owns several Ferraris, a common perk for the team’s drivers.

Personal life

Leclerc began dating Alexandra Saint Mleux, a French art history graduate of the École du Louvre, in 2023. They announced their engagement in November 2025 and married in a private ceremony in Monaco at the end of February 2026, just before the new season.

The couple share a miniature dachshund, Leo, who has become a fan favorite on social media. Charles’s brother Arthur continues to race, and the family remains close to the Bianchi family.

Philanthropy

Leclerc’s best-known charity effort came in 2023. After deadly floods hit Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, he auctioned the gear he wore at that year’s Monaco Grand Prix through RM Sotheby’s.

  • His signed helmet sold for €306,000, a record for a racing helmet at auction
  • The full auction, including race suit, gloves and boots, raised about €429,600

He has also supported charity auctions and fundraising events in Monaco, and his wife founded Corazones Unidos, a charity for children’s education in Mexico.
