How his fortune changed in 2025 and 2026

Forbes calls Trump’s September 2025 estimate of $7.3 billion the highest figure it had ever given him on the Forbes 400. A year later, some of those gains had faded. In its September 15, 2026 breakdown, Forbes reported these changes over the year:

Asset 2026 value Change over one year
Trump Media stake $1 billion Down $980 million
$TRUMP memecoin holdings $185 million Down $525 million
World Liberty tokens $80 million Down $260 million
Liquid assets $1.9 billion Up $800 million
Mar-a-Lago $620 million Up $160 million
Other U.S. golf courses $705 million Up $200 million
Trump National Doral $365 million Up $110 million
Licensing and management $655 million Up $155 million

Forbes estimated Mar-a-Lago’s annual operating profit at about $54 million, up 63%. It put profit from his American golf properties at about $110 million.

Early life

Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York. He was the fourth of five children of Fred Trump, a developer of middle-income housing in Brooklyn and Queens, and Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, who was born on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland.

He attended the New York Military Academy and spent two years at Fordham University. He then transferred to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1968.

He joined his father’s company, Elizabeth Trump & Son, which was renamed The Trump Organization in 1971. How much help he got from his father has long been debated. Trump has described a “small loan” of $1 million. In 2018, The New York Times reported that he received at least $413 million in today’s dollars from his father’s businesses over his lifetime. Trump’s representatives disputed the newspaper’s findings.

Manhattan developer: the 1970s and 1980s

Trump’s first big Manhattan project turned the old Commodore Hotel next to Grand Central Terminal into the Grand Hyatt. It opened in 1980, helped by a tax abatement from the city and a construction loan his father co-guaranteed.

In 1983 he completed Trump Tower, a 58-story tower on Fifth Avenue. It became his headquarters and home and remains one of his best-known assets. In 1985 he bought Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, for about $5 million plus about $3 million for its furnishings.

During the late 1980s he expanded into casinos in Atlantic City, the Plaza Hotel in New York and an airline, the Trump Shuttle. Much of that growth was financed with debt.

Bankruptcies and recovery: the 1990s and 2000s

The debt caught up with him in the early 1990s. Between 1991 and 2009, his businesses filed for six corporate bankruptcies, involving the Trump Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza, Trump Castle, the Plaza Hotel and two later casino holding companies. These were business filings, not personal bankruptcies.

He rebuilt by putting less of his own money at risk. He bought the 70-story 40 Wall Street building in the mid-1990s, at a time when lower Manhattan office space was cheap. He also began licensing his name to buildings owned and financed by other developers. In return, the Trump Organization collected fees.

He also moved into golf. He opened Trump National Golf Club courses in New York, New Jersey and other states, and bought the Menie Estate near Aberdeen, Scotland, in 2006.

The Apprentice and the Trump brand

NBC’s The Apprentice premiered in 2004, with Trump as host. It became one of his biggest sources of cash. In 2020, The New York Times reported, based on his tax records, that the show and the licensing deals linked to it brought him about $427 million.

The show made his name a consumer brand. It was licensed widely, including to a for-profit education venture, Trump University. In 2016 Trump agreed to a $25 million settlement with former students of Trump University and did not admit wrongdoing.

First presidency and the years between terms

Trump was elected the 45th president in 2016 and served from 2017 to 2021. He handed day-to-day control of the Trump Organization to his sons Donald Jr. and Eric, but he kept his ownership.

His fortune shrank during that term. Forbes valued him at $4.5 billion in 2015 and $3.7 billion in 2016. By September 2021 the estimate was $2.5 billion, and he dropped off the Forbes 400 for the first time in about 25 years. Forbes linked the decline mostly to the pandemic’s hit to hotels, offices and retail space.

After leaving office, he started new businesses. Trump Media & Technology Group launched Truth Social in 2022. He also sold digital trading cards (NFTs) starting in December 2022, along with licensed books, Bibles, sneakers and watches.

Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT)

Trump Media went public in March 2024 through a merger with a blank-check company and trades on Nasdaq as DJT. Trump is its largest shareholder. His 2025 financial disclosure showed the shares held in a revocable trust overseen by Donald Trump Jr.

Because the stake is so large, DJT’s share price has been the biggest single driver of his net worth:

  • March 2024: soon after the listing, Forbes valued the stake at more than $4 billion at its peak, briefly pushing his net worth above $8 billion.
  • December 18, 2025: Trump Media announced an all-stock merger with fusion energy company TAE Technologies, valued at about $6 billion. DJT shares rose about 33% that day, according to CNBC.
  • May 1, 2026: the stock closed at $9.39, down about 76% from $38.94 on March 1, 2024.
  • September 2026: Forbes valued the stake at about $1 billion, down $980 million in a year, after the shares fell about 50%.

Crypto ventures

Crypto has become Trump’s fastest-growing source of income. According to The New York Times’ analysis of his disclosures, crypto brought in at least $1.4 billion of his roughly $2.2 billion in reported 2025 revenue. These are revenue figures, not profit or net worth.

World Liberty Financial

World Liberty Financial launched in September 2024 as a crypto platform promoted by Trump and his sons. A Trump family entity is entitled to about 75% of net proceeds from sales of its WLFI governance tokens.

  • 2024: Trump reported $57.4 million from World Liberty on his June 2025 disclosure.
  • 2025: his June 2026 disclosure listed more than $500 million from WLFI token sales and about $65 million from equity sales in the company that controls the platform, according to CBS News.
  • Total: Forbes estimates Trump has taken in nearly $800 million from roughly $2 billion of World Liberty token and equity sales.

USD1 stablecoin

World Liberty launched a dollar-backed stablecoin, USD1, in March 2025. In May 2025, the Abu Dhabi-backed investment firm MGX said it would use $2 billion in USD1 to invest in the crypto exchange Binance. His 2026 disclosure listed $196 million from equity sales in a related entity, Stablecoin Holdco.

$TRUMP memecoin

The $TRUMP memecoin launched on January 17, 2025, three days before his second inauguration. It briefly traded above $70, then fell sharply. His 2026 disclosure listed about $635 million in revenue linked to the coin. Forbes estimates his memecoin proceeds at more than $600 million, and it valued his remaining coins at $185 million in September 2026.

Family crypto deals

His sons run their own crypto businesses. Eric Trump co-founded the bitcoin mining company American Bitcoin, which began trading publicly in 2025. Donald Jr. and Eric are both involved in World Liberty. Forbes counts only the president’s own share of these ventures in his net worth.

Conflict-of-interest questions

Government ethics experts and Democratic lawmakers have argued that crypto deals involving foreign investors, such as the MGX transaction, create conflicts of interest for a sitting president. The White House rejects that view. In June 2026, spokesperson Anna Kelly said “there are no conflicts of interest” and that neither the president nor his family “has ever been involved in conflicts of interest.” Trump has said that he is not involved in running his personal finances.

Financial disclosures

As president, Trump files an annual report with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics (OGE). These reports list assets and income in broad ranges, so they do not give an exact net worth.

2025 disclosure (covering 2024)

Released in June 2025, this 234-page report showed assets of at least $1.6 billion, according to a Reuters count. The New York Times calculated his 2024 income at about $622 million. Items included:

  • World Liberty Financial: $57.4 million
  • Save America coffee table book: $3 million in royalties
  • Trump Watches: $2.8 million
  • Trump sneakers and fragrances: $2.5 million
  • “God Bless the USA” Bible: about $1.3 million
  • NFT licensing: about $1.16 million
  • “45” guitars: about $1.06 million

2026 disclosure (covering 2025)

Released on June 30, 2026, the much larger report listed about $2.2 billion in income. Highlights reported by CBS News and others:

  • Crypto: about $1.4 billion in total, led by $635 million tied to $TRUMP
  • Trump National Doral: $121.8 million
  • Mar-a-Lago: $77.4 million
  • Turnberry, Scotland: about £23.6 million in hotel and golf revenue (The Scotsman)
  • Trump International, Aberdeen: about £6.7 million (The Scotsman)
  • Trump Watches: $4.7 million
  • Books: about $1.9 million from Save America, plus smaller sums from other titles

The report also listed legal settlements paid by media and tech companies after lawsuits Trump brought: Meta ($24.5 million), YouTube ($22 million), ABC ($16 million), CBS ($16 million) and X ($8 million). According to CBS News, most of that money went to his future presidential library or the Trust for the National Mall, not to him personally.

Real estate and golf

Real estate is the oldest part of his fortune. Forbes valued his golf and club portfolio at about $1.8 billion in 2026, roughly $500 million more than a year earlier.

Property Year acquired or opened Reported price or value
Trump Tower, Manhattan Completed 1983 Developed by Trump
Mar-a-Lago, Palm Beach 1985 About $5 million plus $3 million for furnishings; Forbes value $620 million (2026)
40 Wall Street, Manhattan Mid-1990s Bought when downtown office values were low
Menie Estate (Trump International Scotland), Aberdeen Bought 2006; first course opened 2012 Second course, the MacLeod, opened in 2025
Trump National Doral, Miami 2012 About $150 million purchase; Forbes value $365 million (2026)
Trump Turnberry, Scotland 2014 About £23.6 million in 2025 revenue

He also owns or operates golf clubs in Bedminster, New Jersey; Jupiter, Florida; Westchester, New York; and other states, plus a course in Ireland. His 2026 disclosure showed Jupiter and Bedminster each bringing in more than $30 million in 2025.

Licensing deals worldwide

Most new Trump-branded towers are licensing deals. Other developers own and finance the buildings and pay the Trump Organization to use the name. Bloomberg counted more than $10 billion in projects using the Trump name as of 2025, including:

  • A golf club and villas in Qatar (about $3 billion project value)
  • A Vietnam golf and resort complex ($1.5 billion)
  • Trump International Hotel & Tower Dubai (more than $544 million)
  • Trump Tower Jeddah ($533 million) and a project in Riyadh (about $530 million)
  • Trump International Oman ($500 million)

These are total project values, not money paid to Trump. Forbes valued his licensing and management business at $655 million in 2026.

Legal judgments and their financial effect

New York civil fraud case

In February 2024, Justice Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump and his company had inflated asset values. He ordered about $355 million in disgorgement plus interest, which brought the total to more than $500 million. Trump posted a $175 million bond in April 2024 while he appealed.

On August 21, 2025, a New York appeals court threw out the monetary penalty as excessive but upheld the finding of liability and the non-financial penalties. New York Attorney General Letitia James appealed to the state’s highest court in September 2025. As of our latest review, no final ruling on that appeal had been reported.

E. Jean Carroll judgments

  • $5 million verdict (2023): the Supreme Court declined to hear Trump’s appeal in June 2026 and denied a rehearing on August 17, 2026. Carroll received about $5.6 million with interest in July 2026, according to Forbes.
  • $83.3 million verdict (2024): a federal appeals court upheld it in September 2025. Trump has asked the Supreme Court to review it, and as of August 2026 the case remained under appeal.

Trump denies Carroll’s allegations.

Presidential salary

The U.S. president is paid $400,000 a year. During his first term, Trump donated his quarterly paychecks to federal agencies such as the National Park Service. The White House says he is again not keeping the salary in his second term. PolitiFact noted in October 2026 that these donations have not always been documented publicly.

Personal life

Trump has been married three times:

  • Ivana Zelníčková (1977–1990): mother of Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric
  • Marla Maples (1993–1999): mother of Tiffany
  • Melania Knauss (married 2005): mother of Barron

Donald Jr. and Eric run the Trump Organization day to day, and both are involved in World Liberty Financial. Melania Trump has her own income. Her 2026 disclosure listed more than $10.7 million net from a license tied to the Amazon film Melania, plus earnings from her memoir and NFTs.

Philanthropy

Trump has pointed to his donated presidential salary as his main recent giving. His charity, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, was dissolved in 2018 after a lawsuit by the New York Attorney General. In 2019 a judge ordered him to pay $2 million to other charities as part of that case.
