Kurt Russell’s film salaries

Studios rarely publish actor pay, and only some of Russell’s deals have been reported. The table below lists figures that have appeared in press coverage. Where no figure has been reported, we say so instead of guessing.

Project Year Reported pay
Disney films (The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Barefoot Executive and others) 1966–1975 Contract player salary; not publicly reported
Escape from New York 1981 Not publicly reported
The Thing 1982 About $400,000

Stargate 1994 About $7 million, reportedly double his previous fee

The pattern is clear: Russell’s pay rose sharply after Tombstone (1993) and Stargate (1994) proved he could open films. By the late 1990s he sat in the top tier of action stars, even if a few of those big-salary films, such as Soldier, lost money at the box office.

Early life

Kurt Vogel Russell was born on March 17, 1951, in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father, Bing Russell, was a character actor best known for playing Deputy Clem Foster on Bonanza, and also a former minor league ballplayer. His mother, Louise, was a dancer.

The family moved to California, and Russell grew up in Thousand Oaks, where he graduated from high school in 1969. He has three sisters. His nephew, Matt Franco, later played Major League Baseball.

From 1969 to 1975 he also served in the California Air National Guard with an airlift wing based in Van Nuys.

Child star and the Disney years

Russell made his film debut at age 12 in an uncredited part in the Elvis Presley movie It Happened at the World’s Fair (1963). The same year he landed the lead in the western TV series The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, and he went on to guest roles in Gunsmoke, The Fugitive and Gilligan’s Island.

In 1966 he signed a 10-year contract with Walt Disney Productions. Russell became the studio’s leading young star in comedies such as:

  • Follow Me, Boys! (1966)
  • The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969)
  • The Barefoot Executive (1971)
  • Now You See Him, Now You Don’t (1972)
  • Superdad (1973) and Charley and the Angel (1973)
  • The Strongest Man in the World (1975)

He later voiced the adult Copper in Disney’s animated hit The Fox and the Hound (1981). Disney named him a Disney Legend in 1998. The contract gave him steady work through his teens, but salaries for studio contract players in that era were modest compared with the fees he would earn later.

Baseball career

Russell’s first dream was not acting. He wanted to be a professional baseball player, and for a few years he put Hollywood on hold to chase it.

He signed a minor league contract in 1971 and played second base, switch-hitting, in the California Angels’ farm system:

  • 1971, Bend Rainbows (Northwest League): hit about .285 and was named an All-Star
  • 1972, Walla Walla Islanders (Northwest League): hit about .325, despite a broken ankle
  • 1973, El Paso Sun Kings (Double-A): reportedly hit .563 over his first six games

Then, early in the 1973 season, a runner slid hard into him on a double play and tore his rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder. El Paso released him. He finished the year as a designated hitter for the Portland Mavericks, an independent team owned by his father, before retiring.

The choice cost him real money at the time. According to the Society for American Baseball Research, he turned down a sitcom pilot that reportedly offered $130,000 to $180,000 so he could play the 1972 season. Baseball has stayed part of his story: the 2014 documentary The Battered Bastards of Baseball covered the Mavericks, and he played hockey coach Herb Brooks in the sports film Miracle (2004).

Breakout as an adult star (1979–1989)

His adult breakthrough came playing Elvis Presley in the 1979 TV movie Elvis, directed by John Carpenter. The role earned him an Emmy nomination and started one of the most important partnerships of his career.

With Carpenter he made Escape from New York (1981), creating the eye-patched antihero Snake Plissken, followed by The Thing (1982) and Big Trouble in Little China (1986).

He also showed range in dramas and comedies. He earned a Golden Globe nomination for Silkwood (1983) opposite Meryl Streep, and starred with Goldie Hawn in the comedy Overboard (1987). In 1989 he teamed with Sylvester Stallone in the buddy-cop film Tango & Cash, which grossed more than $120 million worldwide. You can read more about his co-star in our Sylvester Stallone net worth profile.

Peak earning years (1990–2001)

The 1990s were Russell’s most profitable decade. Backdraft (1991) was a hit, and his turn as Wyatt Earp in Tombstone (1993) became one of the most quoted western roles of all time.

Then came Stargate (1994). Russell was reportedly reluctant to join the sci-fi film, so the producers offered him about double his previous fee, a reported $7 million. The film grossed about $196 million worldwide and launched a long-running TV franchise.

His price kept rising after that:

  • Executive Decision (1996): a reported $7.5 million
  • Escape from L.A. (1996): a reported $10 million to return as Snake Plissken
  • Soldier (1998): a reported $15 million, his biggest known salary

He closed the period with a supporting role in Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky (2001), for a reported $5 million.

Later films and franchise roles (2004–2021)

In the 2000s Russell worked less often but chose well. Miracle (2004) was a crowd-pleasing hit, and he played Stuntman Mike in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof (2007).

The 2010s brought a late-career boom:

  • Bone Tomahawk and The Hateful Eight (2015), two well-reviewed westerns
  • Mr. Nobody in Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017) and F9 (2021), films that each grossed more than $700 million worldwide
  • Ego, the father of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), which grossed about $864 million
  • Santa Claus in Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles (2018) and its 2020 sequel
  • A role in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

His pay for these blockbuster roles has never been made public.

Monarch, The Madison and recent work (2023–2026)

In 2023 Russell joined Apple TV’s Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters as Colonel Lee Shaw. His son Wyatt Russell plays the younger version of the same character. The role won him a Critics’ Choice Super Award in 2024, and the show’s second season premiered on February 27, 2026.

He also stars as Preston Clyburn in The Madison, Taylor Sheridan’s Montana-set family drama with Michelle Pfeiffer. Its six-episode first season premiered on Paramount+ on March 14, 2026, and a second season has already been filmed. Russell is also an executive producer. His fee has not been disclosed, but Sheridan’s shows are known for paying established film stars well; Kevin Costner reportedly earned about $12 million a season on Yellowstone (see our Kevin Costner net worth profile).

Other recent work includes voicing Ego again in Marvel’s What If…?, a voice role in Smurfs (2025), and the western thriller The Rivals of Amziah King with Matthew McConaughey, released on digital in late August 2026. In February 2026 he served as the honorary pace car driver at the Daytona 500.

GoGi Wines and other ventures

Russell is a serious wine lover. He launched GoGi Wines, named after his childhood nickname, with the first release of a 2008 Pinot Noir from California’s Sta. Rita Hills region. That first vintage was tiny: about one barrel.

He started the label in partnership with Peter and Rebecca Work of Ampelos Cellars and has since added Chardonnay and other bottlings. GoGi is a boutique brand sold through its website, selected retailers and tasting events, where Russell often appears in person. Its revenue is not public, and it is best seen as a passion project rather than a major driver of his net worth.

He is also an FAA-licensed private pilot with instrument and multi-engine ratings. He was inducted into the Living Legends of Aviation in 2010 and supports the humanitarian flying group Wings of Hope.

Real estate

Russell and Hawn have owned homes across North America. Some properties are reported as owned by one partner or the other, so not every home below belongs to Russell alone.

Property Year Reported price
Old Snowmass / Aspen area, Colorado ranch (about 70 acres across two parcels) Early 1980s Not reported
Midtown Manhattan penthouse 1997 About $3.85 million
Palm Desert, California home 2003 About $3.6 million
Pacific Palisades, California home (bought) 2004 About $4.1 million
Palm Desert, California bluff-top home 2011 About $5.7 million
Pacific Palisades home (sold) 2017 About $6.9 million

The Colorado ranch

The couple’s main base for more than 40 years has been their mountain property near Aspen, in Old Snowmass, Colorado. According to the Denver Post, they own about 70 acres across two adjoining properties. Russell owns the roughly 6,500-square-foot, eight-bedroom main house, while Hawn owns a separate 2,700-square-foot guest house. Land in the Aspen area is among the most expensive in the U.S., so this is likely his single most valuable asset.

Los Angeles and the 2025 wildfires

The couple bought a 6,389-square-foot home on Capri Drive in Pacific Palisades for about $4.125 million in 2004 and sold it in early 2017 for about $6.9 million. That home survived the January 2025 Palisades Fire; in late 2025 it was listed for $13.4 million and later bought by Anthony Hopkins, whose own Palisades house burned. Russell and Hawn did not share in that later gain.

They now keep a home on Los Angeles’ Westside, widely reported to be in Brentwood, for work trips. During the January 2025 fires, family members living nearby, including Wyatt Russell’s household, were forced to evacuate. There have been no credible reports that Russell’s own home was destroyed.

Other homes

In 2003 the family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, so Wyatt could play junior ice hockey, and they have owned property there. They have also been linked to a lake house in Ontario’s Muskoka region and a vineyard property in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Personal life

Russell married actress Season Hubley in 1979 after they met on the set of Elvis. Their son, Boston Russell, was born in 1980, and the couple divorced in 1983.

That same year he began dating Goldie Hawn. They had first met as teenagers on the 1968 Disney film The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, and reconnected while making Swing Shift (1984). Their son, actor Wyatt Russell, was born in 1986. Russell also helped raise Hawn’s children from her marriage to Bill Hudson, actors Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson.

Russell and Hawn have been together for more than 40 years but have never married. Both have said in interviews that they never felt the need to. Because they are unmarried, their fortunes are legally separate. Hawn’s own wealth is widely estimated at around $90 million, built on Laugh-In, an Oscar for Cactus Flower, hits such as Private Benjamin and her MindUP children’s foundation. That figure is not included in Russell’s $100 million.

Philanthropy

Russell keeps a low profile with his giving. He is an honorary council member of Wings of Hope, a charity that uses aircraft to deliver medical care and aid to remote communities. Hawn runs her own charity, the Hawn Foundation, whose MindUP program teaches social and emotional skills in schools; that is her philanthropy, not his.

Figures are widely reported estimates as of 2025–2026. Russell trails these peers mainly because he rarely owned a big share of a franchise’s profits. Most of his money came from upfront salaries rather than back-end deals. See more stars on our actors net worth list.
