Early life

John Michael Osbourne was born on December 3, 1948, in Marston Green, then part of Warwickshire, and grew up in a working-class family in Aston, Birmingham. The house was crowded and money was always short.

He left school at 15 and worked a string of jobs, including construction labourer, apprentice toolmaker and slaughterhouse worker. At 17 he was convicted of burgling a clothes shop and spent about six weeks in Winson Green Prison after his fine went unpaid.

Music offered a way out. He put up a notice in a local music shop advertising himself as a singer with his own PA system, which led him to guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward.

Black Sabbath years (1968–1979)

The four musicians formed the band in 1968, first as Earth and then as Black Sabbath. Their slow, heavy sound and dark lyrics are widely credited with creating heavy metal.

The self-titled debut came out in February 1970 and was followed the same year by Paranoid, which topped the UK chart and gave the band its signature songs, “Paranoid”, “Iron Man” and “War Pigs”. Albums such as Master of Reality, Vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath kept them among the biggest rock acts of the decade.

Like many bands of the era, Sabbath earned far less than its sales suggested in the early years, and disputes with management followed. Ozzy sang on the band’s first eight studio albums before he was dismissed in April 1979 over his drug and alcohol use.

Solo career and Sharon’s management

His firing turned out to be the start of his biggest success. Sharon Arden, daughter of Sabbath manager Don Arden, began managing him, and the two later married on July 4, 1982.

His solo debut, Blizzard of Ozz (1980), featured guitarist Randy Rhoads and the hits “Crazy Train” and “Mr. Crowley”. It was certified quadruple platinum in the U.S. Diary of a Madman (1981) followed, before Rhoads died in a plane crash in 1982.

Through the 1980s and 1990s Ozzy kept selling millions of records. Key solo albums include:

  • Bark at the Moon (1983)
  • The Ultimate Sin (1986)
  • No Rest for the Wicked (1988)
  • No More Tears (1991), one of his best-selling records
  • Ozzmosis (1995)

“I Don’t Want to Change the World” won him a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 1994. Sharon handled contracts, tours and branding, and is widely seen as the business mind behind the family fortune.

Ozzfest

When Ozzy was reportedly turned down for the Lollapalooza line-up in the mid-1990s, Sharon created her own touring festival. Ozzfest launched in 1996 and ran almost every year until 2010.

The festival became a launchpad for bands such as Slipknot, System of a Down and Disturbed. By 2005 it had drawn more than four million fans and grossed more than $170 million.

Ozzfest also boosted merchandise sales. Ozzy has been described as the first rock star to sell more than $50 million in merchandise. The brand later expanded into one-off events and the Ozzfest Meets Knotfest festival in the 2010s.

The Osbournes and television

The Osbournes premiered on MTV in March 2002 and followed Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly and Jack at home in Beverly Hills. Their eldest daughter, Aimee, chose not to take part.

The first season became the most-watched series in MTV history at the time. The family was reportedly paid about $20,000 per person per episode for season one. For season two, Sharon negotiated a much bigger deal, reported at about $5 million per family member.

In July 2002 the family also signed a $7 million home video deal with Miramax for DVDs of the first two seasons. The show ran for four seasons and 52 episodes until 2005.

Later TV work included Ozzy & Jack’s World Detour (2016–2018) and The Osbournes Want to Believe (2020). The show also launched Sharon as a TV host and judge on The X Factor, America’s Got Talent and The Talk, income that was hers rather than Ozzy’s.

Black Sabbath reunions and later years

The original Sabbath reunited for live shows in the late 1990s, and the live album Reunion earned them a Grammy for “Iron Man” in 2000. The band joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

In 2013 Ozzy, Iommi and Butler released 13, Black Sabbath’s first studio album with Ozzy in 35 years. It reached No. 1 in both the UK and the U.S., and the single “God Is Dead?” won a Grammy. The band’s farewell tour, The End, closed in Birmingham in February 2017.

Ozzy kept recording despite serious health problems. He revealed a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2020 and had several operations after a fall. His last two albums were:

  • Ordinary Man (2020), with guests including Elton John and Slash
  • Patient Number 9 (2022), which won Grammys for Best Rock Album and Best Metal Performance in 2023

He also closed the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with “Iron Man” and “Paranoid”. In 2024 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a second time, as a solo artist.

Back to the Beginning: the final concert

On July 5, 2025, Ozzy and the original Black Sabbath played their last show, Back to the Beginning, at Villa Park, home of his beloved Aston Villa. Seated on a throne because Parkinson’s had left him unable to stand, he sang a short solo set and then joined Iommi, Butler and Ward for the first time in 20 years.

The line-up included Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Alice in Chains and Yungblud, with Tom Morello as musical director. The 45,000 tickets sold out in 16 minutes, and the pay-per-view livestream peaked at about 5.8 million concurrent streams.

No one involved was paid. Proceeds were split equally between Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Acorns Children’s Hospice and Cure Parkinson’s.

How much did the concert raise?

Soon after the show, Morello, Billboard and others reported that it had raised about £140 million (about $190 million), which would make it one of the highest-grossing charity concerts ever. Sharon Osbourne called those reports “ridiculous” in a Pollstar interview in July 2025.

In November 2025 she said on The Osbournes podcast that the show had raised about $11 million for the three charities after production, travel and accommodation costs. The large headline figure appears to reflect gross revenue, not the final donation. The concert money went to charity and did not add to the family’s wealth.

Death and estate

Ozzy Osbourne died on July 22, 2025, at Welders House, his home in Jordans, Buckinghamshire. His death certificate, reported in August 2025, listed a heart attack and coronary artery disease, with Parkinson’s disease also noted.

On July 30, 2025, a funeral procession passed through Birmingham, including the Black Sabbath Bridge, where thousands of fans gathered. He was laid to rest at Welders House after a private family service.

As of October 2026, no official value of his estate has been published, and there has been no reported sale of his music catalog. Tabloid stories about the contents of his will have not been confirmed by the family. Posthumous projects include:

  • Last Rites, his final memoir, published October 7, 2025
  • Ozzy Osbourne: No Escape From Now, a documentary released on Paramount+ the same day
  • Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home, a BBC documentary about the family’s move back to England
  • A planned concert film of Back to the Beginning

Royalties from his solo catalog and his share of Black Sabbath’s music will keep earning money for his heirs for decades.

Sharon Osbourne’s role

It is hard to separate Ozzy’s wealth from Sharon’s. She managed his career from the start of his solo years, created Ozzfest and negotiated The Osbournes deals. Most estimates, including the Sunday Times Rich List, value the couple together.

Sharon also built her own TV career. She was a judge on The X Factor in the UK and America’s Got Talent in the U.S., and co-hosted CBS’s The Talk from 2010 until 2021, reportedly earning about $5 million a year there. That income belongs to her side of the ledger, not to Ozzy’s music earnings.

Real estate

The Osbournes split their lives between England and Los Angeles for decades. Since 2023, Sharon has been selling down the U.S. portfolio.

Property Year Reported price
Welders House, Jordans, Buckinghamshire Owned for more than 30 years Not disclosed
Beverly Hills home (seen in The Osbournes) Bought late 1990s; sold 2013 About $4 million; sold to Christina Aguilera for about $11.5 million
Malibu beach house Sold 2012 About $8 million
Sierra Towers condo, West Hollywood Bought 2014; sold 2024 About $4 million; sold for about $4.35 million
Hancock Park estate, Los Angeles Bought 2015 $11.85 million; listed at $17 million in April 2026, cut to $16 million in October 2026

Welders House, a large country estate in Buckinghamshire, was the family’s English base for more than three decades and is where Ozzy spent his final weeks. He is buried in its grounds.

The Hancock Park house is a 1920s Spanish-style estate of about 10,200 square feet with a guesthouse. The couple first tried to sell it in 2022 for $18 million before taking it off the market. Sharon relisted it in April 2026, and as of mid-October 2026 it had not been reported sold.

Personal life

Ozzy married Thelma Riley in 1971. They had two children, Jessica and Louis, and he adopted Thelma’s son, Elliot. The couple divorced in 1982.

He married Sharon Arden on July 4, 1982, in Hawaii. They had three children: Aimee (born 1983), Kelly (1984) and Jack (1985). The marriage went through very public difficulties, but the couple stayed together until his death, more than 43 years later.

Ozzy spoke openly about decades of drug and alcohol addiction and his later sobriety. In his final years the couple moved back to England, a move followed in the BBC documentary Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home.

Philanthropy

The Osbournes’ best-known charity effort is the Back to the Beginning concert, which gave its net proceeds to three causes:

  • Birmingham Children’s Hospital
  • Acorns Children’s Hospice, which supports children with life-limiting conditions in the Midlands
  • Cure Parkinson’s, a research charity linked to the illness Ozzy lived with

Sharon, a colon cancer survivor, founded the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles in 2004. Ozzy supported it through benefit events over the years.
