Early life
Vin Diesel was born Mark Sinclair on July 18, 1967, in Alameda County, California, with a fraternal twin brother, Paul. He has never met his biological father. His mother, Delora, an astrologer, married Irving H. Vincent, an acting teacher and theater manager, and the boys took his surname.
The family lived in Westbeth Artists Housing, a subsidized building for artists in New York’s West Village. Diesel made his stage debut at age seven at a theater in Greenwich Village.
He studied creative writing at Hunter College for three years before leaving to act. To pay the bills he worked for years as a nightclub bouncer in New York, which is where he started using the name “Vin Diesel.”
Making his own break (1994–2000)
Roles were hard to find, so Diesel made his own. He wrote, directed and starred in the short film Multi-Facial, about an actor of mixed race who struggles to get cast. It was screened at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. His first feature, Strays (1997), went to the Sundance Film Festival.
Steven Spielberg saw Multi-Facial and wrote a part for him in Saving Private Ryan (1998). Diesel then voiced the title robot in The Iron Giant (1999) and broke out as the anti-hero Riddick in the sci-fi thriller Pitch Black (2000).
The Fast and the Furious and xXx (2001–2008)
The Fast and the Furious (2001), about street racers in Los Angeles, was a surprise hit and made Diesel a star. Studios started bidding for him.
Revolution Studios paid him $10 million to play extreme-sports spy Xander Cage in xXx (2002), which grossed about $277 million. Instead of returning for 2 Fast 2 Furious, he turned down a reported $20 million-plus offer and made The Chronicles of Riddick (2004). That film was expensive and lost money.
His mid-2000s results were mixed. The family comedy The Pacifier (2005) was a big success, but Find Me Guilty (2006) and Babylon A.D. (2008) struggled.
The Tokyo Drift deal
Diesel made a short, surprise cameo at the end of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006). Instead of a fee, he took the rights to the Riddick character from Universal. He later called it one of the best deals he ever made. It allowed him to produce Riddick (2013) independently. He has said he put his own house up as collateral to help get that film made.
Fast & Furious mogul (2009–2023)
Diesel returned as Dom Toretto in Fast & Furious (2009), this time also as a producer. The series then grew into a global blockbuster:
- Fast Five (2011): about $626 million worldwide
- Fast & Furious 6 (2013): about $789 million
- Furious 7 (2015): about $1.5 billion, the series’ biggest hit, released after co-star Paul Walker’s death
- The Fate of the Furious (2017): about $1.24 billion
- F9 (2021) and Fast X (2023): about $714 million for Fast X
Across all its films, the franchise has grossed more than $7 billion worldwide. As a producer, Diesel shaped its move from street racing to globe-trotting heists.
Costs grew too. Fast X had a reported net budget of about $379 million, with about $100 million going to cast salaries. It earned only a modest profit, which has put pressure on the budget for the final film.
Fast Forever
The 11th and final main film is titled Fast Forever and is set for release on March 17, 2028. It has been delayed several times. In August 2026 Diesel said the script was finished and filming would start in December. Industry reports have questioned whether the studio can keep its cost down, so the timeline may still change.
Groot, xXx and other franchises
Since 2014 Diesel has voiced Groot, the tree-like hero who only says “I am Groot.” He has played the role in all three Guardians of the Galaxy films, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), two of the highest-grossing films ever, and the Disney+ shorts I Am Groot. He records the line in several languages for foreign releases.
He also produced and starred in:
- Riddick (2013), about $98 million worldwide
- The Last Witch Hunter (2015), about $147 million
- xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017), about $346 million, with strong results in China
- Bloodshot (2020), a Valiant Comics adaptation hit by pandemic theater closures
Business ventures
One Race Films
Diesel founded One Race Films in 1995. It has produced 15 films starring him, from The Chronicles of Riddick to Fast X, and most are released by Universal, which signed a first-look deal with the company in 2011. His sister Samantha Vincent is a producer at the company.
Projects in development include Riddick: Furya and a live-action Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots film with Mattel, which Diesel will write, produce and star in (announced December 2025).
Tigon Studios
A longtime gamer and Dungeons & Dragons fan, Diesel founded video game developer Tigon Studios in 2002. Its best-known release, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (2004), was praised by critics. Tigon also worked on Wheelman (2009) and Assault on Dark Athena (2009). Diesel provided voice and motion capture for its games.
Racetrack Records
Diesel also founded Racetrack Records, a music label. In 2020 he released his own singles, “Feel Like I Do” and “Days Are Gone.”
Real estate
Diesel keeps a lower profile in real estate than many stars. Known deals:
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Hollywood Hills house, 2 bedrooms (bought) | 2000 | $562,500 |
| Beverly Hills estate on about two acres (bought) | 2001 | About $2.25 million |
| Hollywood Hills house (listed for sale) | 2013 | About $1.3 million |
| Hollywood Hills house (relisted) | 2016 | $1.395 million |
He rented the Hollywood Hills house out for about $5,800 a month for years before putting it on the market. The Beverly Hills estate has been reported as his main family home.
Personal life
Diesel has been with Mexican model Paloma Jiménez since 2007. They have three children: daughter Hania (born 2008), son Vincent (born 2010) and daughter Pauline (born 2015), named after his late co-star and close friend Paul Walker. He is godfather to Walker’s daughter, Meadow.
He keeps his family life private. In December 2023 a former assistant sued him, alleging sexual battery during the filming of Fast Five in 2010; Diesel denied the claims. Part of the case was dismissed in June 2025, and the remaining claims were dropped in late 2025.
