Early life
Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton was born on January 7, 1985, in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. His father, Anthony, is of Grenadian descent, and his mother, Carmen Larbalestier, is white British. His parents split when he was two, and he later lived mainly with his father.
Anthony Hamilton took several jobs at once to pay for his son’s racing. Lewis started karting in 1993, at age eight, and won quickly.
In 1998, aged 13, he joined the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Programme. He won the European karting title in 2000, then climbed through British Formula Renault, Formula 3 and GP2, winning the GP2 title in 2006.
McLaren years and first title (2007–2012)
Hamilton made his F1 debut with McLaren in 2007, alongside two-time champion Fernando Alonso. He finished on the podium in his first nine races and lost the title by a single point.
In January 2008, McLaren signed him to a five-year contract, reported at about €13.4 million a year. He won the 2008 world championship on the last corner of the last race in Brazil, at 23 the youngest champion at the time.
McLaren could not give him another title-winning car over the next four seasons. By 2012 his pay had risen sharply, but he wanted a new challenge.
Mercedes dynasty (2013–2024)
In September 2012 Hamilton shocked the sport by signing with Mercedes, which had won just one race since returning to F1. Many called it a mistake. It turned into one of the best career moves in sports history.
When the hybrid-engine era began in 2014, Mercedes built the dominant car. Hamilton won the title in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of seven championships.
His pay rose with every title. Each new Mercedes deal was reported to be worth more than the last, reaching up to £40 million a year by 2019.
2021 and the later Mercedes years
In 2021 he lost a bitter title fight to Max Verstappen on the final lap in Abu Dhabi. He then went 945 days without a win as Mercedes struggled with new rules.
He returned to the top step at Silverstone and Spa in 2024. By then he had already signed for Ferrari, a move announced in February 2024.
Ferrari (2025–present)
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, at age 40, was one of the biggest transfers in F1 history. Forbes estimates his 2025 Ferrari pay at about $70 million in salary plus $0.5 million in bonuses, making him the best-paid driver on base salary.
2025 season
His first Ferrari season was hard. He won the sprint race in China but was disqualified from the main Grand Prix that weekend for a technical breach.
He finished sixth in the championship with 156 points, 86 behind teammate Charles Leclerc. It was the first season of his F1 career without a Grand Prix podium.
2026 season
The new 2026 rules gave Ferrari a stronger car. Hamilton took podiums in China, Monaco and Canada, then won the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix in June 2026. It was his first win for Ferrari and the 106th of his career, extending his all-time record.
After the United States Grand Prix on October 25, 2026, he was third in the standings with 241 points, behind leader Kimi Antonelli, with five races left. He finished fourth in Austin.
Hamilton said in May 2026 that his Ferrari contract runs through at least the end of 2027. Sky Sports and others report that he holds an option for 2028. Neither side has published the terms.
Businesses and investments
Hamilton has built a business portfolio well beyond racing. Some bets have paid off and one has failed.
- Dawn Apollo Films: his production company, set up in 2022. It co-produced the Apple film F1 (June 2025), starring Brad Pitt and produced with Jerry Bruckheimer. Hamilton advised on the racing and made a cameo. The film grossed about $630 million worldwide, and Bruckheimer confirmed a sequel in February 2026.
- Almave: a non-alcoholic blue agave spirit, a tequila alternative, launched in October 2023 with Mexican incubator Casa Lumbre. Pernod Ricard bought a minority stake in 2024.
- +44: his own clothing and lifestyle label, named after his race number and the UK dialling code. Forbes lists it among his businesses.
- Denver Broncos: in August 2022 he joined the Walton-Penner ownership group, which bought the NFL team for a then-record $4.65 billion. The size of his stake has not been disclosed.
- Neat Burger: a plant-based burger chain he launched in 2019, with backers including Leonardo DiCaprio. It lost money, reporting a £7.86 million loss for 2022, closed its last UK sites in 2025 and entered solvent liquidation in July 2025.
Endorsements
Forbes estimates Hamilton earned about $30 million off the track in the year to May 2026, the most of any F1 driver. His current and recent partners include:
- Dior: ambassador and designer of capsule collections; he co-chaired the 2025 Met Gala
- Lululemon: ambassador since 2025
- Rimowa, Electronic Arts, Fanatics and Topps (named by Forbes in 2026)
Some long-running deals ended with his Ferrari move or earlier:
- Tommy Hilfiger: a fashion partnership from 2018 that produced the TommyXLewis collections
- IWC Schaffhausen: watch ambassador during his Mercedes years; the deal ended around his move to Ferrari
- Monster Energy: personal partner from 2017; the deal ended for 2025 because of Ferrari sponsor conflicts
- Puma: a long-time kit and apparel partner
Earlier in his career he also worked with brands such as Vodafone, TAG Heuer and Hugo Boss through McLaren and Mercedes.
Real estate
Hamilton is a tax resident of Monaco, but has called his mountain home in Colorado his real base. Prices below are reported figures.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Monaco penthouse, Fontvieille | Not disclosed | About $16 million (reported value) |
| Colorado mountain home | Not disclosed | Not disclosed |
| New York, 443 Greenwich St. penthouse (Tribeca) | 2017 | $43.99 million; listed at $57 million in 2019, later reportedly sold for about $49.5 million |
| Milan apartment, Porta Nuova | 2025 | Not disclosed |
Reports say he never moved into the New York penthouse, which had a terrace with a plunge pool.
Private jet and cars
Hamilton bought a red Bombardier Challenger 605 jet in 2013. The 2017 Paradise Papers leak reported that the jet was imported via the Isle of Man in a way that avoided several million pounds in VAT. His lawyers said the arrangement was legal.
He sold the jet in 2019, saying he wanted to cut his carbon footprint and fly commercial more often.
His car collection has reportedly included a LaFerrari and two 1967 AC Cobras. In recent years he has said he sold much of his collection as part of a lower-emission lifestyle.
Personal life
Hamilton is not married and has no children. He was in a long relationship with singer Nicole Scherzinger, which ended in 2015.
He has followed a vegan diet since 2017. His half-brother, Nicolas Hamilton, also races. He was knighted in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to motorsport.
Philanthropy
Hamilton’s charity work focuses on diversity in motorsport and education.
- The Hamilton Commission (2020): a research project with the Royal Academy of Engineering on why so few Black people work in UK motorsport. Its report came out in 2021.
- Mission 44 (2021): a charitable foundation he launched with a £20 million personal pledge, to help young people from under-represented backgrounds into science, engineering and careers in sport.
- Ignite: the joint diversity initiative with Mercedes agreed in his 2021 contract.
