Gold surged past $5,500 per ounce earlier in 2026 before pulling back to around $4,400, according to CBS News, leaving retirement savers weighing whether physical gold belongs in their accounts.

Ongoing economic uncertainty around inflation and interest rates has kept gold on many investors' radar despite the drop.

Adding gold to a retirement portfolio through a self-directed IRA, an account that can hold physical assets beyond conventional stocks and bonds, involves a specific set of costs and rules that standard 401(k) and IRA accounts do not carry.

Understanding both the fee structure and the mechanics of moving money in is essential before acting.

What Running a Gold IRA Costs Each Year

Swiss America's blog puts total annual gold IRA expenses at roughly $200 to $350 for most savers once the account is open.

That figure bundles a one-time setup fee (typically around $50, though some custodians charge up to $300), an annual maintenance charge covering recordkeeping and IRS reporting (generally $75 to $300 per year), and depository storage fees.

Storage runs about $100 per year for commingled storage, where your metals are held alongside other clients' equivalent holdings, or around $150 for segregated storage, where your specific coins or bars are kept separate.

Insurance on stored metals is almost always built into the storage fee. Transaction fees for buying or selling metal inside the account range from $0 to $195 per trade. Wire or funding transfers can add $15 to $50.

The numbers add up fast. Goldiraaccounts.com reports broadly similar ranges: $50 to $100 for setup, $75 to $300 annually for administration, and $100 to $300 for depository storage.

Spot price markups from dealers typically add another 2 to 8 percent depending on the product type.

How Gold Fits a Broader Retirement Portfolio

Yahoo Finance reported that gold can serve as a complement to stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs (exchange-traded funds, which are baskets of assets traded on an exchange), but generally should not replace them as a primary retirement holding.

Gold has historically behaved differently from equities under certain market conditions, which can reduce the overall impact of a single asset class declining sharply.

Stocks, however, have delivered higher long-term returns than gold over extended periods, meaning a heavy allocation to gold carries a real opportunity cost.

Consider the math. A $10,000 investment in gold in 2005, when the metal traded at roughly $513 per ounce, would have grown to about $78,233 by the end of June 2026 at approximately $4,014 per ounce, Yahoo Finance noted.

Gains like that can look compelling, but the annual fees specific to a gold IRA reduce net returns in ways a standard brokerage account holding gold ETFs would not.

Rolling Over a 401(k): Rules That Matter

CBS News noted that moving 401(k) funds into a gold IRA involves more complexity than simply buying the metal.

A direct rollover, where the plan administrator sends funds straight to the receiving IRA, avoids mandatory 20 percent federal tax withholding that applies when the distribution is paid to the account holder first.

Missing the 60-day redeposit window in that scenario can convert part or all of the distribution into taxable income and trigger an early withdrawal penalty. The deadline is unforgiving.

Federal rules also restrict what gold products qualify. Most collectibles are prohibited inside IRAs, with exceptions for specific bullion coins and bars meeting IRS purity standards. Required minimum distributions and hardship withdrawals cannot be rolled over at all.
