Reported pay and contract milestones

Because her contracts are private, the clearest record of Guthrie’s earnings comes from reports on her deals and on what NBC paid others in the same chair.

Year Event What was reported
2012 Named Today co-anchor, replacing Ann Curry Pay not disclosed
2015 Contract renewal (Variety) Deal to keep her at NBC for at least three more years; terms not disclosed
2016 Contract quietly extended (Variety, December 2016) Terms “could not be immediately learned”
2017 Matt Lauer fired from Today Fortune reported Lauer had earned $20 million to $25 million a year
2018 Hoda Kotb joins her as co-anchor Kotb’s pay widely reported at about $7 million at the start
2025–2026 Co-anchors with Craig Melvin Guthrie’s pay widely reported at about $8 million a year

The gap between Lauer’s reported pay and what his successors earn was a frequent topic in New York tabloids, including Page Six, after 2017. None of those reports included a figure confirmed by NBC for Guthrie.

Early life

Savannah Clark Guthrie was born on December 27, 1971, in Melbourne, Australia, where her father, Charles, was working as a mining engineer. The family moved back to the United States when she was about two and settled in Tucson, Arizona.

Her father died suddenly in 1988, when she was 16, while on a mining trip in Mexico. Her mother, Nancy Guthrie, raised Savannah and her two siblings in Tucson.

Guthrie went to Amphitheater High School and then the University of Arizona, where she earned a journalism degree, cum laude, in 1993.

Local TV news and a law degree

Her first TV job was at KTVM, an NBC affiliate in Butte, Montana. The newsroom closed about ten days after she started. She moved on to KMIZ in Columbia, Missouri, and in 1995 returned home to KVOA, the NBC station in Tucson.

She later reported for WRC-TV, NBC’s station in Washington, D.C., where she covered the September 11 attack on the Pentagon and the 2001 anthrax attacks.

While working in Washington, she studied law at Georgetown University Law Center. She graduated magna cum laude in 2002 and was elected to the Order of the Coif, an honor society for top law students. Washingtonian reported that she scored first on the Arizona bar exam in her year.

A short legal career

Guthrie joined the big law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld as a litigation associate, working on white-collar criminal defense. Associates at firms like Akin Gump earn six-figure starting salaries, so the law was a well-paid fallback.

She accepted a federal court clerkship in Washington but turned it down to return to journalism. She remains a member of the District of Columbia and Arizona bars.

Court TV and the move to NBC News

In 2004 Guthrie became a national trial correspondent for Court TV. Her mix of legal training and on-air experience made her a natural fit, and she covered high-profile cases including the Michael Jackson trial.

NBC News hired her in September 2007 as a legal analyst and correspondent. Her rise there was quick:

  • December 2008: named NBC’s White House correspondent, covering the Obama administration
  • 2010–2011: co-anchored MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd
  • May 2011: named NBC News chief legal analyst
  • June 2011: became co-host of the third hour of Today

Co-anchor of Today (2012–present)

NBC announced on June 29, 2012, that Guthrie would replace Ann Curry, and she started as main co-anchor of Today on July 9, 2012, alongside Matt Lauer. The role put her at the top of NBC News and brought a large pay rise.

After Lauer was fired in November 2017, NBC named Hoda Kotb co-anchor in January 2018, creating the show’s first female anchor pair. Kotb left in January 2025, and Guthrie now co-anchors with Craig Melvin.

Guthrie also anchors big NBC events. She has hosted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting, worked on Olympics coverage, and moderated a 2020 presidential town hall with Donald Trump. These duties are generally part of an anchor’s contract rather than separate paydays.

Like other network morning anchors, she works on multiyear contracts. Variety reported renewals in 2015 and again in December 2016, and NBC has kept her deal terms private since then.

Jeopardy! and the Wordle game show

In 2021 Guthrie was one of the guest hosts of Jeopardy! after Alex Trebek’s death, with her episodes airing in June 2021. Game show hosting is one of the best-paid jobs in TV, as the careers of Pat Sajak and Bob Barker show.

On May 11, 2026, NBC announced that Guthrie will host a new prime-time game show based on Wordle, the New York Times puzzle, with Jay Leno‘s successor in NBC late night, Jimmy Fallon, among its producers. The show is set to premiere in 2027, and she took a two-week break from Today in September 2026 to film it. Her fee has not been reported.

Books and other income

Guthrie has written four books, which add royalty income and help her brand outside the newsroom.

Book Year Notes
Princesses Wear Pants 2017 Children’s picture book, co-written with Allison Oppenheim
Princesses Save the World 2018 Sequel picture book with Oppenheim
Mostly What God Does 2024 Faith memoir; No. 1 New York Times bestseller
Mostly What God Does Is Love You 2025 Children’s edition of the memoir

Mostly What God Does was her most successful book. She promoted it widely, including on Drew Barrymore‘s talk show, where the two celebrated the children’s edition becoming a bestseller in 2025. Publishers do not disclose advances, so her book income is not public.

Guthrie has made small acting cameos as herself, including in the series finale of 30 Rock (2013) and Sharknado 3 (2015). She does not have major endorsement deals, which is typical for network news anchors.

Real estate

Guthrie and Feldman have owned several Manhattan homes, mostly in Tribeca. Purchase prices come from city records reported by real estate outlets.

Property Year Reported price
Three-bedroom apartment, 77 Reade Street, Tribeca (bought by Feldman) 2012 $3.8 million; listed for $5.995 million in 2017
Full-floor, four-bedroom loft, Tribeca 2017 About $7.11 million; listed for $7.1 million in January 2023, cut to $6.5 million later that year
Manhattan townhouse 2023 Price not reported
Upstate New York property Not reported About $2.7 million (Newsweek, 2026)

The Tribeca loft sits in a 13-unit boutique condo building and features a nearly 50-foot great room and a chef’s kitchen. When they listed it in 2023, the couple said they wanted to live in a townhouse, and they later shared photos from a new home in New York City.

Personal life

Guthrie was first married to Mark Orchard, a British TV journalist she met while covering the Michael Jackson trial. They married in December 2005 and divorced in 2009.

She married Michael Feldman on March 15, 2014, in Tucson. Feldman is a Democratic political and communications consultant who worked for Al Gore and co-founded the Glover Park Group, a Washington strategy firm. His career adds a second high income to the household.

The couple have two children: daughter Vale, born in August 2014, and son Charles “Charley” Max, born in 2016 and named after her father. Guthrie has spoken openly about her Christian faith, which is the subject of her 2024 book.

2026: health and her mother’s disappearance

In January 2026, Guthrie had surgery to remove nodules and a polyp from her vocal cords and took a short break from Today.

Days later, her mother, Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing from her home near Tucson. She was last seen on January 31, 2026. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department says investigators believe she was taken by force, and the FBI is working the case with local authorities. A combined reward of $1.2 million has been offered.

Guthrie stepped away from NBC in February, including the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, to help with the search. She returned to Today on April 6, 2026. As of early November 2026, Nancy Guthrie has not been found, no suspect has been publicly named, and the family has issued a new public appeal for information.
