Early life
Edin Džeko was born on March 17, 1986, in Sarajevo. His father, Midhat, also played football in Bosnia, and his mother is named Belma. His cousin, Emir Spahić, later captained the Bosnian national team.
His childhood was shaped by war. The Siege of Sarajevo began when he was six. His family home was destroyed, and at one point 15 relatives shared his grandparents’ small apartment of about 35 square meters.
He joined the youth system of FK Željezničar, one of Sarajevo’s biggest clubs. He later finished a bachelor’s degree in sport and physical education at the University of Sarajevo in 2018, while still playing at the top level.
Early career: Željezničar and Teplice
Džeko started his senior career at Željezničar as a tall, lanky midfielder. He did not stand out, and in 2005 the club sold him to Czech side Teplice for only about €25,000. A Željezničar director later joked that the club “thought we won the lottery.”
In the Czech Republic he moved up front and grew quickly. After a loan to Ústí nad Labem, he scored 13 league goals for Teplice in 2006–07, the second-highest total in the Czech league. That season earned him a move to Germany.
Wolfsburg: Bundesliga champion
VfL Wolfsburg paid about €4 million for him in 2007. It turned out to be one of the best deals of the decade. Under coach Felix Magath, Džeko formed a deadly partnership with the Brazilian forward Grafite.
In 2008–09 Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga for the first time in the club’s history. Džeko was voted the league’s players’ player of the year and finished 13th in the 2009 Ballon d’Or voting. A year later he was the Bundesliga’s top scorer with 22 goals.
He scored 66 league goals in 111 games for Wolfsburg and turned down interest from AC Milan to sign a new contract. His value had risen several times over.
Manchester City: two Premier League titles
In January 2011, Manchester City paid a reported £27 million (about €32 million) for Džeko. At the time it was a record fee for a player leaving the Bundesliga and one of the biggest in City’s history. He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract.
His time in England brought the biggest trophies of his career:
- FA Cup in 2011, City’s first major trophy in 35 years
- Premier League in 2011–12, when his stoppage-time header against QPR on the final day set up Sergio Agüero’s title-winning goal
- Premier League and League Cup in 2013–14
He signed a new four-year contract in 2014. City never published his wages, but as a regular in one of the world’s richest squads he was among the better-paid strikers in England. He scored 72 goals in 189 games for the club.
Roma: Serie A top scorer
Džeko joined Roma in 2015 on a loan worth €4 million, with an €11 million obligation to buy that was triggered later that year. He reportedly agreed a four-year deal worth about €4.5 million net per season.
His first season was quiet, but his second was the best of his career. In 2016–17 he scored 29 Serie A goals to become the first Bosnian to win the Capocannoniere, the league’s top-scorer award. He was also the top scorer in the Europa League that season.
In 2018 he helped Roma reach the Champions League semi-finals. In August 2019 he signed an extension to 2022, which made him Roma’s highest earner. Reports put the new salary between €5 million and €7.5 million net a year. By 2020 he had become the most prolific foreign player in Roma’s history.
Inter, Fenerbahçe and Fiorentina
Džeko moved to Inter in August 2021 on a two-year deal worth €5 million net per season, or about €9.25 million gross, according to Calcio e Finanza. He won two Coppa Italia titles and two Italian Super Cups, and started the 2023 Champions League final, which Inter lost 1–0 to Manchester City.
In June 2023 he signed a two-year contract with Fenerbahçe in Istanbul. The club put his salary at about €4.2 million per season. He scored 35 league goals in 71 games in Turkey.
In summer 2025 he joined Fiorentina on a free transfer. The one-year deal paid a reported €1.8 million net, a big drop from his peak. The move did not work out: he made 11 league appearances without scoring and left in January 2026.
Schalke 04 and the 2026 comeback
In January 2026, Džeko joined Schalke 04, then leading Germany’s second division. Fiorentina let him go for free. According to Bild, his short-term contract paid a €300,000 base salary, a €400,000 promotion bonus and €3,000 for every point the team won.
He scored on his debut, a 2–2 draw with Kaiserslautern, and became the oldest scorer in 2. Bundesliga history. He added six goals and six assists in 11 matches as Schalke won promotion back to the Bundesliga.
On August 3, 2026, he signed a one-year extension to June 2027. Bild reported the offer as a base salary of about €900,000, rising to around €1.3 million with bonuses. He wears the No. 10 shirt.
Bosnia and Herzegovina national team
Džeko made his senior debut on June 2, 2007, and scored a late equalizer against Turkey. He became captain in 2014 and led Bosnia to its first World Cup that summer in Brazil, where he scored in the country’s first World Cup win, 3–1 over Iran.
In 2026 he did it again. Nine days after turning 40, he scored the equalizer against Wales in the play-off semi-final, which Bosnia won on penalties. On March 31, 2026, in Zenica, Bosnia drew 1–1 with Italy and won the shoot-out 4–1 to qualify for the World Cup.
At the tournament, Bosnia drew with Canada, lost to Switzerland and beat Qatar 3–1 to reach the round of 32, where they lost 2–0 to the United States. Džeko passed 150 caps during the World Cup and has 73 international goals, both national records.
Endorsements and business ventures
Džeko’s endorsement income has never been disclosed. Reports link him to boot deals with major sportswear brands and to regional advertising work in the Balkans, but there is no public figure. For a player of his profile, it is a small share of his income compared with club salaries.
His main business is in hospitality on the Croatian coast:
- Dubrovnik café (2019): he invested in a café in the Lapad area with his longtime friend Miho Obradović, a local restaurant owner.
- EZZA Steak & Cocktail Bar (2021): opened in August 2021 near the Ploče Gate of Dubrovnik’s old town. Džeko co-owns it with his wife, Amra, and business partners Armin Hadžić and Sarah Čerkez.
Real estate
Few of Džeko’s property deals have been reported. His best-known home is on the Croatian coast, where he spends the off-season.
| Property | Year | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| Sea-view villa with pool, Lapad, Dubrovnik, Croatia | 2015 | Not disclosed; local press valued it near €2 million |
Italian media reported the purchase in July 2015, just before his move to Roma. During his career he has also lived in Manchester, Rome, Milan, Istanbul, Florence and Gelsenkirchen, but details of those homes have not been made public.
Personal life
Džeko has been with Bosnian model and actress Amra Silajdžić since 2011, and the couple married in 2014. They have three daughters and a son. Amra is also a partner in the family’s Dubrovnik restaurant.
He is known for speaking five languages: Bosnian, Czech, German, English and Italian. He holds Croatian citizenship as well as Bosnian. Fans in Bosnia call him the “Bosnian Diamond.”
Philanthropy
Džeko has used his profile to help children and families in Bosnia:
- In 2009 he became Bosnia’s first UNICEF national ambassador, visiting schools and children affected by the war.
- In 2011 he helped open a UNICEF center in Bosnia.
- In March 2021 he and former NBA player Mirza Teletović launched the “Athletes for Life” fund with the charity Pomozi.ba, to help people pay for medical treatment.
