Microsoft shares closed at $516.17 on Sept. 25, 2026, up 3.66%, or $18.24, after the company unveiled new artificial intelligence features for its Copilot software, according to The Motley Fool.

Trading volume hit 37.9 million shares, about 15% above Microsoft's three-month average of 32.9 million, per the outlet's reporting, which was republished on Yahoo Finance.

The rally added roughly $130 billion to Microsoft's market value in a single session, based on the stock's move and its $3.7 trillion market capitalization reported by the Motley Fool.

Investors are now watching how quickly businesses adopt the new tools and whether cloud demand keeps pace, the outlet reported.

What Microsoft Announced

Microsoft rolled out an array of new Copilot capabilities on Friday, including code-generation tools and what the Motley Fool described as a persistent AI agent designed to move the product beyond its original role as a chat-based assistant.

The update is aimed at widening adoption of Copilot and supporting premium subscription revenue across Microsoft's productivity suite.

The announcement came as Microsoft works to differentiate its AI assistant from rival chatbots. Reporting details on the agent's specific design were limited to what Microsoft disclosed publicly Friday.

How the Broader Market Moved

The S&P 500 closed at 7,742 on Friday, up 0.49%, while the Nasdaq Composite finished at 27,069, up 0.48%, the Motley Fool reported.

Those gains came even as the Federal Reserve's recent rate decisions have kept borrowing costs elevated for investors navigating a higher-rate environment.

Among Microsoft's software and cloud peers, Oracle closed at $137.10, down 1.75%, while Alphabet finished at $343.92, up 0.46%. Investors in that group were focused on AI-driven cloud demand and Microsoft's spending plans, according to the Motley Fool.

Spending Scrutiny Continues

Microsoft is on pace to spend more than $115 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, most of it on data centers and AI infrastructure, the Motley Fool reported.

That level of outlay has put Microsoft, along with other large technology companies known as the Magnificent Seven, under pressure to show a return on those investments.

Friday's stock move suggests the market views the Copilot changes as a positive step, the Motley Fool reported, though it cautioned that AI adoption remains in an early stage.

Microsoft currently trades at 21 times cash from operations, below its five-year average of 25, according to the outlet's analysis.
